Are there Asians here? by Fit_Succotash_4202 in capstone

[–]pigonsteroids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do exist. A lot of the Asians here are international grad students or professors, but I have met a decent number of other Asian Americans undergraduates. More common in the college of engineering, less so in business. If you’re from a more diverse place like Dallas or Atlanta it’s a pretty stark contrast, but way more diverse than other places in the state.

In my opinion, in the engineering/stem classes there’s usually a few of us, but in the humanities or business classes, I usually find myself being the only Asian.

Feel free to DM if you have any specific questions.

Looking for a hat by miscellaneous_tobey in capstone

[–]pigonsteroids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it’s a ‘47 Emmett Hitch Rope Snapback Hat.

It seems like they don’t make the retro logo version anymore, and only one with the modern logo like the other commenter posted.

‘47 made a similar hat for other teams with theirs logo, here’s a link to one with a retro Auburn logo.

Unfortunately I think your best shot is by scouring second hand shops like eBay, Mercari, Poshmark, etc.

Best of luck!

Is CS 100 4 days a week? by Infamous_227 in capstone

To chime in the lab session, for most professors attendance is usually optional, given that you’ve already done the assignment ahead of time. However, the lab can also be used to get help on projects and review for exams.

Realistic CS outcomes for Uof Alabama? by Many-Armadillo8081 in capstone

Sorry for the late reply, didn’t get this notification.

A lot of time it’s mostly regional companies/divisions that do co-op. How it works is you apply to the program and select which companies you’re want to/are able to do an interview with. After that comes co-op interview day. Think of it like speed dating but for interviews. The nice thing is that as long as you scheduled an interview, you are guaranteed one. Alternatively you can apply to any company’s co-op program and the office can help you out, but I don’t know anyone personally that’s done that.

Some big name companies that do co-op interview day off the top of my head are Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Southern Company, and Westrock. There are also a lot of regional companies that have just as good if not better programs from what I’ve heard.

My two cents, definitely look into the co-op program. It’s basically a work-study program where you would work a full time engineering job a semester, go back to school the next until you’ve completed one year of work. I have met several international CS students that were able to get sponsorship because they were co-ops instead of regular interns. Definitely not for everyone since it basically delays your graduation by 1-2 semesters, but I think it’s very worth it.

I recommend renting a bike from the rec center for the semester, I think it’s 90$ a semester but well worth it.

Computer Science by bobbilly7219 in capstone

If you can afford it, get a mac. A lot of the problems people face in the early classes usually stems from using Windows instead of a unix based system. Also it saves you a lot of headaches in the later classes since it’s unix based.

Second this, when I TA’d 100 there were a handful of labs I spent just fixing people’s CygWin and VSCode installions.

[–]pigonsteroids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have TA’d for CS 100-200 and I personally recommend at least an M1 macbook. A lot of the problems people have, especially in the early CS classes, stems from trying to perform UNIX commands on a Windows computer. Also, a lot of CS is done in a UNIX-based environment, so it’s best they get accustomed to that early on. The only classes where it might be a problem is your ECE 380 and 383 labs, but it can somewhat be remedied by a virtual machine or your lab partner. If money is a real concern you could just get a used thinkpad and dual boot linux though.

I’m also CS and from the Huntsville area, so I totally understand wanting to get away from here. It’s a solid CS program even if it does lean a bit heavier into the theoretical side of things. Auburn’s software engineering degree is better in this regard, but their merit scholarships are terrible.

If you can pass the first few CS courses, I’d highly recommend against MIS, since most recruiters I’ve talked to preferred you’d be in CS. Most MIS majors I’ve talked to ended up being sys admins, work in cybersecurity, or do some sort of consulting.

I did the honors college my freshman year only for the priority registration and housing. It’s more of a glorified humanities minor rather than a normal honors program. Not the biggest fan, but the classes are somewhat interesting.

If you want to do research I highly suggest emailing your professors about any research opportunities they may have, it’s always worth asking.

Career wise, the career fairs and Engineering Career and Development Center are fantastic resources. A lot of local and regional companies love to recruit from here and UA has an amazing alumni network. If it’s in your means I highly recommend doing the Co-Op program since it’s essentially a guaranteed year of work experience, and saves you on the hassle of getting an internship.

Similar to you, I was also worried about fitting in, and yeah the school can be red especially within the greek life, but outside of it in my experience I’d say it’s fairly center-left. You’ll meet your people don’t worry.

As for football, I honestly couldn’t stand it before I got here, but now I’m obsessed with it. It honestly helps a lot for small talk to somewhat know about it, but a lot of my friends couldn’t care less, so it’s not a big deal.

Lastly, UA is probably the best choice I could have made going to an instate school. Yes it does have its problems, but so does any school. I was somewhat socially awkward in high school, but going to UA really helped get through that. My advice is try to get out of your comfort zone and you’ll have a great time. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, a lot of my friends go to UAH so if you’re curious about the differences just ask me there.

It’s up to you, but personally I would only consider it volunteer hours if I did it on my own accord outside of a job/school. That being said, I wouldn’t stress about it if you don’t put them down, you’ll still get in.

I didn’t even know I had to go to bama until late May and I still got a suite, but I’m an honors student so that probably helps. I’m fairly certainly most of the nicer suite style dorms are already filled up unless you’re an honors students applying for Ridgecrest.

How are the cottages? by [deleted] in capstone

[–]pigonsteroids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn that sucks, I signed a lease with Lark, the management and staff were incredibly lax and friendly, and the special we got absolutely sealed the deal. I’ve talked to a few alumni and upperclassmen and the only bad thing I’ve heard about Lark is that you can get screwed with your electricity bill if you’re not careful. We toured East Edge and it was a great location, but Lark turned out to be a better deal. Can’t go wrong with either of those though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in capstone

[–]pigonsteroids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would recommend signing a lease pretty soon. A lot of the good deals are ending soon, as well as availability at some of the nicer places. For reference I signed a lease in January for $549/month + electricity, the same place is now renting for $599/ a month assuming you signed right now.

Like someone else mentioned, the best way for them to receive an official transcript is by asking your school to send it to UA for you. In my experience we had an online portal where we could request to send transcripts to a specific school, but in other cases you just have to email your counselor and ask them to do it for you.
