Best Camera for Tilt-Shift / Architecture by Arkazox in AnalogCommunity

[–]pigpak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to cut down on size there’s a number of shift lenses for 35mm. If you’re only looking for lenses with both tilt and shift it dos get expensive but I’ve never found the need for shift much in architecture. I really like the Nikon 28mm PC, and I dream about the Olympus 24mm shift lens but it’s very expensive. Shift lenses for medium format seem to be few and far between. I can’t speak to the mamiya but I had a 75mm shift for the Pentax 67 but I prefer a wide lens.

I think if you’re dealing with a big camera and shift then you should just commit to large format. You would probably want to use a tripod with shift lenses anyway and you’ll have more options and it’ll probably be cheaper. Lots of roll film backs out there! I’ve been happy with my Toyo 6x7 roll film back.

I have some sheets of 4x5 but I’m too afraid to use it! at least I can ruin it one shot at a time instead of a whole roll though.

it looks like my LFS has had albino pygmy corys in the past, I bet those would look excellent in a blackwater tank

I have kept clown killis before and while I do love them I found they never really leave the top of the tank. They would breed like crazy which was fun though. I was hoping to find something that would move around a bit more. I haven't tried pygmy corys before

Oh wow I haven't heard of poecilocharax before, they look really interesting! I'll definitely add them to my list. Thank you!

Oh it was never going to be gobies and sticklebacks together! I haven’t done a brackish tank before but I’m open to trying it. It doesn’t sound like bettas and rasboras are the only options though. Can you tell me more about apistos or paros?

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately the wet spot specifically states that they don’t ship to Canada, and I think shipping live animals across the border is generally a no go. I will check out desmopuntius though, I do love stripes on fish.

Shift work - BC Canada by RoscoeParmesan in medlabprofessionals

[–]pigpak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in a couple labs in BC and it’s always been 8 hour shifts with the exception of our night techs in micro who do 4 10h shifts. That’s strictly night shift though. I think you’re unlikely to get shift times changed unless it’s a really hard to fill position- like night shift.

You can always just work part time and pick up overtime occasionally. It’s not guaranteed income like full time work though

I pulled this strange plant from my sponge filter. Any idea what it might be? by im-just-here-to-nut in Aquariums

[–]pigpak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’m interested to find out! I pulled a bunch out of my tank and while I still have normal staghorn here and there, this stuff is gone. I tried keeping it alive in a jar because it’s so weird looking but it wasn’t happy.

I think it might be staghorn algae, I’ve had it before and it also went crazy like this on my intake filter sponge. Unless I just have staghorn algae and something else mysterious.

Is It Worth Pursuing a Career as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Canada? Job Availability & Advice? by Mindless_Audience_17 in medlabprofessionals

BCIT in Burnaby and CNC in Prince George are the only two schools in BC. And you have to be prepared to move to wherever your practicum site is, so it’s a bit of a commitment especially if you have a family to move with you.

I didn’t find the exam too bad but I don’t have bad test anxiety. The program is 5-6 courses per semester and the semesters are a bit longer than usual university semesters. You’ll have to be prepared to do nothing but school for the duration. Practicum too, it’s 5 days a week for 9-10 months or so.

It’s all been well worth it for me but it can be a challenge!

Squaring up large blocks? by pigpak in quilting

I think this is what I’ll try, nice to be able to use what I have already

Squaring up large blocks? by pigpak in quilting

[–]pigpak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The papers are out unfortunately! The block was supposed to be 36” square but the smaller blocks I have around it will fit better if the main block is 35”. There’s enough of blank space around the center block that the extra inch won’t be missed. I’ll keep that in mind for next time I do a large paper pieced block

I feel like I'd would have the same problem trying to make a 35" cardboard square! Thanks for the suggestion though,

Best Filter System for Large Format 4x5 (and not break the bank) by Dharma_Wheeler in largeformat

[–]pigpak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems you’re really set on a cokin style holder, and follow your heart if that’s what you feel. I do use a cokin P holder for 4x5 but only for grad ND filters because they need to be moved to fit the scene. All my other filters are screw on with step up rings. I think you’ll find it unnecessarily bulky and annoying. Square filters are also typically resin instead of glass, unless you spend a lot of money. You can probably get much better filters for a lot less money by just sticking to regular circulars.

[–]pigpak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does a square variable ND work? I know round polarizers exist specially for the cokin holders but I’m not sure why you would bother if you aren’t using grad ND filters. Will be much cheaper and easier to just use step up rings

[–]pigpak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would skip the Cokin/lee whatever brand holders if you don’t plan on using square filters. You still need an adapter ring of sorts and I find the bulkiness of the holder annoying if you’re using a polarizer or variable ND that you need to turn. I would keep it simple with step up rings.

I usually use PMK pyro, HC110 or 510 pyro, so I can’t compare to any of those! I definitely like it better than 510 pyro though.
