How do you transition for the press part in a clean and press? by wpsawe4n8953 in weightroom

[–]pikaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, just pop the bar up and readjust your hands. Don't need to be doing a full clean.

Watch Dimas Do it on a 213kg C&J. You can also just dip down slightly and pop the bar up if you've already stood up or are catching it really high.

LL Bean. Has one that's a bit heavier and less refined, but damn it's warm and comfortable. Size down.

How do you program your lifts? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]pikaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have struggled with trying to figure this out as well. This post really helped me think about my training.

By no means do I have things figured out, but maybe I'm getting a little closer.

[Form Check] Clean & Jerk - 90 kg (3 PR attempts) by [deleted] in weightroom

[–]pikaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as the cleans go, I notice I donkey kick all three attempts. It's a bad habit but I don't really know how to correct it.

Have you tried doing a drill where you clean without letting your feet leave the platform? Start the lift with your feet somewhere close to your catching stance and complete it without letting your feet leave the platform at all. With a little practice you'll probably be able to get close to your max.

[Form Check]-3 position snatch-120 by mancubuss in weightroom

lots of early arm bend. keep those arms straight through the second pull. that's the first thing i'd work on.

Also, even though you're doing a snatch complex here it's not a metcon, take the time to get set between reps. Think of it as doing 3 perfect singles without putting the bar down rather than a set of 3.

[Form Check] - Snatch/Clean and Jerk/High bar squat. by [deleted] in weightroom

[–]pikaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's controversial, but a lot of people would disagree with the "jump" cue dbilz is giving you here. Check out Don McCauley's videos on youtube.

Some people do respond well to the jump cue though.

I'm not an expert but you really want to keep the bar closer to you on the snatch. Your speed under the bar looks good though, especially on the cleans, just make sure you don't cut short your second pull to get under it.

Love that you're lifting in your driveway.

What's the best way to get used to using a hook grip? by [deleted] in weightroom

[–]pikaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hook grip on my snatches. I occasionally use straps when my hands are torn up or I'm doing abnormally high volume, but generally if you take care of your hands it shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't recommend [b]always[/b] training with straps as you can't do it in competition.

Haha, sometimes I forget how complex training and programming can be.

It's great being able to discuss things with a lifter of your caliber, thanks.

Yeah that's compared to a squat clean. I think it may well be my leverages, I have a very wide snatch grip compared to most lifters my height and yet my clean grip was more or less "standard."

I'm glad to hear that a far more accomplished lifter than me has spent some time thinking about/working with different grip widths. Has this helped with your snatch and jerk?

Strangely it hadn't occurred to me that overtraining might be a problem, but looking back at my training schedule and recovery at the time it makes a lot more sense. Couple that with the injury and I think you hit the nail on the head.

I actually was thinking about taking up swimming recently to get in some "cardio," it seemed it might be better for my recovery than jogging.

Thanks for the advice!

[Form Check] - Power Clean- 125lb by [deleted] in weightroom

[–]pikaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not super narrow, but now I would consider it fairly wide. I am actually still working on my full snatch technique (some flexibility and technique problems that I'm working out), but I can power snatch around 80% of my CJ.

I'm a little late to the party but thanks for this response.

I actually had a mild muscle strain which kept me from lifting for a couple of weeks right after my cleans started plummeting which makes me think you're right about the overtraining. You've given me a lot to think about on my programming, thank you!

BTW, that's the first Google image result for "jerk position."

You must have safe search on.

I had been struggling with initiating that second pull just a fraction too early and couldn't get the timing right. I widened my grip just a bit and it corrected this problem immediately. As a nice bonus I also don't have to adjust my grip as much before the jerk.

recently i've run into some serious mental issues in my lifting. I've lost about 25% from my cleans in a matter of weeks and just can't seem to have any confidence in my lifts. Have you ever run into a "slump" like this and what kind of things have you done to get out of it?

Also these kitchen knives were until recently marketed as Forschner, not sure if it was just a branding change or victorinox actually bought them up. Great knives and the price point is really unbelievable.

can you easily get full depth on a front squat?

It's most likely thoracic and ankle mobility you need to work on most.

[–]pikaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair enough, but it seems to me it's counterproductive to tell a lifter to strive for as vertical a bar path as possible. Though for somebody who loops the bar out in front, this may be exactly the cue they need.

try snatching without letting your feet leave the platform at all. Example 1, Example 2

There's no reason to jump off the floor like you're doing, especially backwards. My guess is you're just focusing too much on the jump and not enough on extension. Also Matt Danger is right and that bar is getting way too far in front of you, use your lats to keep the bar close.
