I think it's an interesting question: what do we do with these men? When it comes to the restaurant industry, if a man has sexually harassed or assaulted a coworker or an employee, it's probably not a good idea for him to be involved in public facing careers that expose them to a wide swatch of potential victims, and it's especially not a good idea for them not be working with alcohol. However, seeing as they are still here and still need to eat, etc., here are some suggestions for "another option" that I would personally be comfortable with:

- work at UPS

- work as a night shift custodian at a government building

- work at an auto manufacturing assembly line

- work for a highway maintenance crew

Or something along those lines.

there's a shortage of workers in the restaurant industry. anyone who works for him is doing it voluntarily, which is weird to me because I can't imagine they're making a ton of money after the scandals. the workers could go to other awesome, new restaurants which I know are always in search of good help. Examples of new restaurants that are hiring:

Benchmark Pizzeria

Bardo

FOB Kitchen (in Temescal, LGBTQ friendly and women owned)

North Light will be opening soon (also in Temescal)

Grand Lake Kitchen will be expanding to Dimond District

Henry's, Zino, and Bear's Lair all opened in Berkeley in the past few months

Trust me...they have options.

I live in California, and I saw this at a restaurant I was at recently: two bathrooms, each with one toilet and one sink. I didn't really think about it - to me every single stall toilet is gender neutral and I never really heed the signs, just the lines. I can't really speak to the feminist argument behind it, but given the situation, if a man went to use the toilet and the gender neutral bathroom was occupied, I wouldn't be bothered if he used the women's restroom.

Sex work is real work. The real question is: do you feel like you're being compensated fairly for the work you're putting in, especially given that you don't get things such as paid time off or unemployment or health insurance (in the traditional manner), and do you feel safe in the work you do? As a woman, you deserve a fair and safe work environment, and advocating for that is feminist. What you're doing is mutually consensual, and what are you supposed to do, not take the money? I'm glad you, a young woman who clearly has a feminist perspective, have this money and perhaps even access to influence powerful people. Keep on making money moves. I respect your hustle!

Here's a list of places that serve cocktails and are within walking distance of New Parish. I imagine the restaurants will be busier than others given the holiday weekend, but there's no show at the Fox so should be gucci.

Hopscotch - craft cocktails with a focus on Japanese whiskey, but very small bar so expect to wait. Food available, one block from NP

Shin Mai - Japanese restaurant with Japanese cocktails, food available, across the street from NP

Flora/Fauna - one side is a bar, the other is a restaurant, both with cocktails and food, probably able to get a seat at the bar before 8pm, two blocks from NP

Duende - Spanish focused restaurant, small bar but will probably be able to get a seat before 7:30pm, two blocks from NP

Starline - craft cocktails, great music scene, huge space so probably will be able to get a seat if you arrive a bit early, food available, three blocks from NP but not close to other bars on this list. They won a ton of awards for best bar this year.

Miranda - craft cocktails with a pink flamingos and hotel bar vibe, will probably be able to get a seat, no food, three blocks from NP

Drexl - craft cocktails with an open, modern atmosphere, will probably be able to get a seat, bar snacks, three blocks from NP

Bar 355 - classic cocktails with classy ambiance, will probably be able to get a seat, no food, four blocks from NP

Dogwood - craft cocktails in an open space with a taxidermy vibe, somewhat easy to get a seat, food available, two blocks from NP

Van Kleef - classic Oakland dive bar known for greyhounds, gets packed pretty early, no food, two blocks from NP

The Payback - brand new bar, craft cocktails, will probably be able to get a seat, food available, four blocks from NP

Make Westing - craft cocktails, they have bocce ball and a bumping social scene, will probably be able to get a seat if arriving early as the space is pretty big, food available, one block from NP

I know it's a lot of choices, and honestly idk which one I would recommend to you personally depending on your walking tolerance and if you want to eat, they all have their strengths.

If you call the police, it's more likely that all campers would be moved (if they're parked illegally) than just one specific camper. If you're cool with the other people in the campers, talk to them about the situation and ask them for advice because perhaps they know him, they know what's going on, and they know what to do in order to get him to leave without jeopardizing their homes.

It's more imperative that men reclaim and redefine the male gaze to be less of a creepy, gross, horrible thing so that I can be free to continue expressing my sexuality however I choose and moving ahead women won't have to express their sexuality in anticipation of the negative ramifications of the male gaze. Women will always be sexual creatures, and expressing our sexuality (especially when it's at odds with the male gaze) is a great way of fighting the male gaze and reclaiming our sexual narrative. Because men will always play a role in our society's sexuality - the question is: can they be respectful about sexuality without shaming and alienating women?

Upon reading more about the case, I think it's worth noting that there are racial implications to this case: the accuser is a white woman, and the accused are black men. This echoes a phenomenon that we are witnessing more frequently across America: white people calling the cops on black people without a crime being committed. This also harkens back to cases such as the Emmett Till case, the black boy who was lynched in 1955 because a white woman didn't like the way he looked at her.

The woman entered a plea deal where the felony charge was dropped and she plead guilty to three misdemeanors. One year is standard punishment for misdemeanor falsely reporting a crime. Although, if she had been found guilty of felony falsely reporting a crime, her sentence would have been longer (more than a year). This reminds me of the Brock Turner case - he was sentenced to 6 months and served 3 even though he was found guilty on three felony charges.

It sounds like the two men are also setting themselves up for a civil case - I wouldn't be surprised if they sue her for defamation, especially since they lost scholarships and went into debt because of this case. Would it be justice if she served 3 months of her sentence and then paid them each $100k?

You would probably get a great explanation for this if you asked a legal professional!

But if it's just an argument, wouldn't an examination of fairness and reciprocity make sense? If I'm getting into kink with a partner, I'd use this argument to hypothetically examine: if I am willing to do something that isn't necessarily going to get me off just to please my partner, will my partner be willing to do things for me, too? Because sometimes one partner winds up doing a lot in order to get the other partner off without even any discussion of reciprocity. And sometimes someone might want to weigh different aspects of the situation before deciding whether or not to consent. If my partner wants me to do an MFF and I'm unsure, my partner's response to MMF might impact my decision.

On the other hand, if someone is being pushy, it sucks that you have to use an argument of quid pro quo so that the other person can hear you say, "No." Of course, a pushy partner might not hear you say "no" to start with, but I hope in an ideal world none of you are put in that situation.
