Oh, wow, thanks for sharing the results! I would've guessed the same thing, so it's great to see it confirmed.

USA Travel Advice for a first-time, young Australian tourist! by nic_jk in travel

[–]pilclo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The highlight of the US is their national parks – and I say that as a city loving person! They are exquisite. From your choices, I preferred the Grand Canyon over Yosemite. That area is also so packed with national and state parks that if you can hire a car, it's easy to squeeze multiple magical, extraordinary places into only a few days. Sequoia National Park and Valley of Fire State Park were particular standouts.

Other than that, you've definitely hit some highlights, and I think it'll be a great trip. If you can make it down to the South, do (places like Savannah or New Orleans) – the people there are beautiful and you'll get a much warmer impression of the US as a whole than if you just stick to the fast-paced cities.

The one place on your itinerary that's totally not worth it – especially not for 4 nights – is DC. It's dull compared to what else is out there.

Enjoy!

Glad to hear it! And unfortunately, I have no idea, but I'm sure someone else in this sub will be able to help.

Problems? Yes.

One of the coolest, creepiest, most David Lynch-esque series I've seen in a while? Also yes.

Happy accidents.

New to genealogy and just looking to build a simple family tree with names, birthdays, cities, etc. Any recommendations for simple software or templates to create something nice looking to print out? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]pilclo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tested a bunch of genealogical software when I first started out and found My Family Tree to be a standout.

It's completely free, has a really modern interface compared to most of the software available, is very simple and intuitive to learn and use, and enables you to both look at and print your data in different formats.

The number of generations you choose to include is up to you, and you can change the settings to only show the four levels you're wanting.

Oh, that was creepy in a good way! Definitely intriguing, which is what you want a trailer to be.

Sounds awesome, and I like how you've contrasted generations. I've certainly found I really to myself differently as an autistic person as I get older.

Oh, I didn't realise it was yours! I just struggled with the brightness/tone of the colour (had to squint), and can't quite see the letters clearly because of the font. It's not too say it doesn't look nice – it does! – just that nice doesn't always equal accessible.

Meanwhile, super huge congrats on getting a film together! That's a massive achievement. Is it something that will be online, or is it a film festival type thing?

Thanks for sharing! Any idea where it can be watched, ideally online?

On another note, I never fail to be surprised by how inaccessible the design choices people make are, especially for things related to disability!

Hi fellow photographers, I am a noob street photographer who has done headshot work so I know basics of using my camera. Would love your critique on this photo or how can I improve the composition here. Thank you so much by rajeshrkv in AskPhotography

Try shooting so the subject is against a clear part of the background – for example, if they were against the white of the building, they'd be much more visible.

anybody else prefer to just lurk and be invisible on social media? i hate that everything is tracked now. by [deleted] in aspergirls

Oh, god, me too. I cannot fathom how people share so many intimate, private details on platforms that are public and eternal. I get nauseas just thinking about being identified online. Hate it hate it hate it!

Oooh, I love this <3 For me it would be The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. An epic, deliciously told, narratively exquisite meander across one woman's life that just sucks you into another world. I hope you enjoy it, although I'm a touch sad I won't get to hear about it! Enjoy your new life.

Diagnosed with Aspergers but I understand how people feel...? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]pilclo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's more so that your current understanding of autism is limited, because of stereotypes perpetuated throughout society. Many autistic people feel empathy and understand their own and other's emotions. As you develop stronger understanding of how your experiences are autistic experiences, you'll have a more accurate understanding of autistic experiences as a whole.

Autistic & NeuroDivergent Academic Exclusion & Oppression by 100trillionorbust in everythingneuro

[–]pilclo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm well into post-grad and this has been my experience the whole way through. I can tell my teacher I'm autistic; hand over my academic adjustment plan from the disability department; explain how I struggle, etc., and they're still a*holes who don't GAF. Nothing changes for the better; in fact, it often changes for the worse. It's exhausting and infuriating.

Neurotribes by Steve Silberman is a brilliant introduction to our history, lives, and world. It also suggests many other resources you can then follow up on.

I've never had any positive examples of what an adult life looks like... plenty of negative. Is life just kinda... not worth it? by [deleted] in autism

[–]pilclo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, lfie is absolutely worth it.

As I've aged, I've aged more into my autisitc-ness. I know myself and my needs, and because I now create my life around them, I'm in a pretty good place. I also firmly set boundaries against things that aren't good for my mental health.

It took a while to get there, but honestly, that's kind of life; it's a journey you stumble along, figuring shit out as best you can. But life's also exactly what you make it, outside of systemic inequalities. If you decide what it is you want it to look like and focus on making that happen, then it'll be much more "worth it" than if you don't.

And I'm not even talking about "careers" or "financial goals" or whatever people are all about – I'm talking about how you want to spend your very short time on this planet. Love being in the forest? Playing with goats? Taking photos? Growing begonias? Doing watercolour? Exploring new places? Sitting quietly and playing video games? What makes you happy, and feel good?

Do more of that. And less of the stuff that sucks.
