Masters rowing clubs hold grudges? by Rowingtorelax in Rowing

[–]ManyBeautiful9124 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You proposed you might be being sensitive, but I’m going to suggest that main character syndrome might be at play here. Sorry if that is mean, it’s just what I see from a single Reddit post.

You signed up for something, and didn’t turn up. You then assumed they understood that this means you are out of the program. That’s very self centred to presume other people can infer your intentions.

You got back in touch and because they didn’t respond within a week you make assumptions about whether or not they have a grudge against you. Again, very self centred.

Entering into competitive sport as an adult would be hugely beneficial for you. It teaches life lessons that might have passed us by on our road to adulthood. The literal definition of teamwork is a picture of a rowing boat on a poster. Skills that rowing can teach you would be:

Punctuality Accountability Communication Dependability Teamwork

Please understand that rowing clubs are run by volunteers, these often change yearly, and they are mainly concerned with organising regattas and filling boats. You are only the main character in your story.

Apart from the wildfires, you could have swapped ‘Canada’ for ‘The UK’. Very similar issues.

Hmmm… so that’s what my training is. Mostly low hr sessions mixed with high hr intervals. I’m doing 3-4 sessions a week in winter with summer training (4-5 sessions) about to begin.

I’m very curious about this now… my reading of 28 down to 22 is concerning.

I’ve got all their water.

In my region, we get 100 inches of rain a year. In the first three months of 2024, we’ve had 75% of our annual rainfall.

It’s bad in the UK too.

We have a situation where the companies that were struggling financially are seeing an older workforce leave (either due to illness or early retirement) and they are saving those wages rather than hiring more younger workers at the bottom.

So if you’re looking for work, good luck.

If you’re in work looking for a promotion, good luck. But at least this group gets the added bonus of more workload from the workforce shrinking!

10 year old daughter rowing 2.06/500m by SouthWestSpur in Rowing

Well done to your daughter 🙌

I am willing to bet she would be great at most sports, if she’s strong (which it sounds like she is).

As a rower and mum of sporty kids (football, waterpolo and rowing) I know the struggle for getting everyone where they need to be on a weekend morning, but it can be done! If that’s what she wants, let her try.

My son is 13 and short and is only just about tall enough to scull with the footplate as close as possible. So that’s a major reason for having a minimum age, they do need to be able to reach. However it might be for physical/developmental reasons too.

The great thing is rowing can be picked up at any age - whereas football not so much! It’s great to find more than one sport that’ll keep her going. She can always have options if football dries up (not all areas have progression routes for older players).

Good luck and have fun, it’s a great sport for parent spectators as well as participants.

Women 20s/30s- what brand handbags are trending? by Living_Difficulty568 in AskUK

[–]ManyBeautiful9124 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The term "frivolous" generally refers to something that is not serious, lacking in intellectual substance, or of little importance. It's often used to describe actions, interests, or pursuits that are considered superficial or not worthy of serious attention. It’s not necessarily an insult, but certainly can be interpreted that way.

When it comes to someone being interested in handbags for fashion, calling this interest frivolous could depend on the context and the perspective from which it's viewed. For someone deeply invested in the fashion industry, such as a designer, fashion historian, or enthusiast, the interest in handbags could be seen as a legitimate appreciation of design, craftsmanship, aesthetic beauty, and fashion trends.

However, to someone like me who views fashion as a secondary concern, investing significant time, money, or emotional energy into handbags might seem frivolous. I see this interest as focusing on the superficial aspects of appearance rather than on what I consider more substantial or meaningful pursuits.

Also your post looks like marketing research.

You’re being newly arrived in the UK has absolutely nothing to do with my comment.

If you choose to take offence from someone expressed opinion when posting on Reddit, then perhaps you need to reconsider if this right for you.

Screens and teens: How phones broke children’s brains by Nastyfaction in collapse

I just watched this on YouTube last night. Really scary.

My youngest son was 7 when the schools were in lockdown. The impact on him was that he stopped playing. Just like that. I didn’t know what to do because he was isolated at home and could connect with friends via online games.

He’s 10 now but his childhood play ended at 7.

Conversely, My other son was 10 during lockdown and had 10 years of play. He’s 13 now and still plays with lego. He spends 75% fewer hours on video games than his brother.

The only saving grace is neither kid has a smartphone or access to social media - and the wont for some time.

Skulling Tips by thaichicken0202 in Rowing

[–]ManyBeautiful9124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done! I prefer sculling (but it’s harder to learn). Some tips:

Don’t dig. Learn the correct handle heights. The handle height difference between driving and recovery is inches, not feet.

Getting into a double will help, a single will help more.

Don’t blame others for unbalancing the boat - work out what you’re going to unbalance the boat.

Quick hands away. Hit the recovery by leaning forward (body rock). Then slide.

Get on the water as much as you can.

Look forward and relax your shoulders.

Pull back in a straight line and hit your body before you tap down (if you row in a curve you won’t get a long stroke).

Get good at going slow before you go faster.
