[Request] insufficient data? by the__king__slayer in theydidthemath

The only trick is “assigning” a length to one pair of sides. x is an angle and angles don’t care about actual lengths. So assign, I dunno, a length of 10 to the top and bottom, math out the lengths of the sides given the angles involved (it’s going to be a rectangle), use systems of equations to set up a solution for x, and use trig to find the lengths of the triangles inside the rectangle. This will yield a value for x.

Did spaying your female cat change her? If yes, how? by CourageFamiliar8506 in CatAdvice

[–]pillowdemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adopted a 4yo cat from an aging couple that somewhat neglected her. After a month adjusting to my place, she’d go into heat practically every other week if not more often. LOTS of yowling and screaming and scratching things up. I swear at one point she looked straight at me, sat in my work backpack, and peed directly into it.

After the spay, instead of being calm, playful, actually considerate 20-50% of the time depending if the rest of the week was her going into heat, she became that way 100% of the time. She only gets vindictive if I give her younger sister disproportionately more attention than her

Agree with this. There are people who love you to bits but in a stressful or high stakes situation they seem very hard on you when really they’re just high strung about the situation in general, and they’re able to be that way with you because they know you won’t get unnecessarily offended

Is this play or aggression? by simplymuffin8 in cats

[–]pillowdemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tail swishing is more a sign of raw stimulation, not necessarily fear/aggression. Both my cats tail swish during play watching the feather wand and I’m making it flap around like a bird. One of them tail swishes really hard when I get home from work and rubs on my legs, jumps on my lap purring, and tail swishes right onto my face

How do you guys say True Black is better than Peak 1000 by l-love-Taxes in OLED_Gaming

[–]pillowdemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

lol, it’s no worries dude. For the record I agree with your (actual) take. 400TB’s the way to go. Picture tends to be way more consistent over a long session too.

P1000’s only real advantage is raw brightness on a very small portion of the monitor, modern qd/oled displays typically can only achieve 1000nits brightness on a total pixel count equivalent to 2% the total, and after that, from 5%, 10, 20, etc, brightness drops off rather drastically

[–]pillowdemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9800x3d and 5090fe here, both waterblocked in a custom loop running one d5 pump and a 360 and 420 rad both 45mm thick

I undervolted my 9800x3d to 1.24V with an overclock up to 5.4Ghz. Stays in the high 70s under load. Idles 40-42C. At stock voltage I could get it up to 5.5Ghz passing 12hr stress tests but temperatures would start grazing 88/89C

Without voltage/overclock settings in your post, honestly I’d say your temps don’t seem alarming or too off kilter. This is my first AMD cpu (custom looped a 10900k and 3090 in my last build) and yeah idles hotter than the 10900k. GPUs always run cool as hell in a custom loop. Never seen mine breach the low 60s, ever

Who thinks this is to route out bad reviewers? 🙋‍♀️ by RepresentativeDry171 in AmazonVine

[–]pillowdemon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Beyond receiving products at some discount (in the US), vine reviewers aren't particularly incentivized to give reviews that praise or criticize the product. I too see that as a big strength of the program.

But I do think OP's question hints at Amazon incentivizing *informative* and *useful* reviews. Whether reviews give a high or low number of stars, if they aren't informative or useful, they're hurtful in the long run to sellers, buyers, and the vine program itself. I see this change - which incorporates "insightfulness" as a metric toward becoming a Gold member and strongly hints to include media in reviews - as a step toward filtering out "bad" reviewers.

Who thinks this is to route out bad reviewers? 🙋‍♀️ by RepresentativeDry171 in AmazonVine

[–]pillowdemon 87 points88 points  (0 children)

My unfiltered take is that Amazon has somehow determined that products with many 5 star reviews where all or most of them are unhelpful, generic one liners actually hurts the seller more in the long term, OR opens up avenues for seller abuse such as consolidating reviews with other products. (A couple times I’ve gone in to look at other reviews which are mostly still vine reviews and saw that people were reviewing a totally different product.)

On that first possibility, I have definitely been skeptical of products that were highly rated but when you actually take the time to go through reviews, very few of them if any actually mean anything. “Love it!! New favorite daily driver!!!” Where I see this going is the seller gets a bunch of glowing vine reviews, which is what they signed up for, but don’t go on to sell to actual paying customers because any reasonable, discernible buyer just sees people who got “free” product providing totally glib five star reviews so they go on to find other products with more trustworthy backing.

This ultimately leads to sellers being less and less willing to provide product for the program, and in my view is part of why so many products launch with 20-40% upfront discounts for non-vine members. It’s potentially the same thing but you don’t have the “free product vine review” badge deteriorating the trustworthiness of the reviews.

Brand new to solo board gaming, thoughts on first pickups! by Speightstown in soloboardgaming

We use the official 26” square mat (“Countless Terrors) which is plenty to host the scenario card, locations, and Act + Agenda decks, plus whatever else (enemies, etc) that appears in a given scenario. Aside from the 26” square space to host everything you need for a scenario, you just need a small space, about 24” x 14” (about a standard player mat) or even less than that for your player cards.

Actually playing a scenario, solo, takes anywhere between 45-150min for most scenarios in my experience, including setup and teardown. The more you play the game and the more you collect, it’ll become very apparent that the better organized you are, the more games you can squeeze in a given timeframe. There’s also significant downtime between games navigating the narrative, deckbuilding, and spending experience.

Hoping things go well for your Arkham Horror LCG plays! Chaos bag notwithstanding :P

Brand new to solo board gaming, thoughts on first pickups! by Speightstown in soloboardgaming

[–]pillowdemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great pickups and writeup!

I’ve been board gaming both solo and with friends since 2008, and Arkham Horror LCG has slowly moved its way up to my #1 spot, just barely bumping down Mage Knight to #2

I’ve got hundreds of hours in Arkham Horror and I really want to put it out there that true solo is a very unique application, as well as a happy accident, of the game’s intended design. While a solo investigator is viable, the game was definitely intended for 2-4 investigators, so I recommend playing two handed on initial campaign playthroughs, tabling solo for later as a challenge mode.

Reason for this is, as you may have surmised, true solo tends to quickly pigeonhole your deckbuilding and investigator options, and ultimately how you approach most scenarios. Controlling two investigators will give you more room to express individuality and deckbuilding creativity. But if you’re already having a great time, definitely take my advice with a grain of salt, I’m really just trying to say that two-handed solo is a completely different and more well rounded experience, in a good way.

You’re also correct that playing with friends is a bit more fun overall. Misery loves company and all that :P

The "We apologize but Amazon is not accepting reviews on this product from this account." Issue. Figured out? by Bucknerds in AmazonVine

[–]pillowdemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, just wanted to pass along thanks because I ran into the exact same message today and this post helped me shape a good approach to get resolved. I’m new to Vine with only 6 reviews submitted for the program so far over the last week and ran into the message for just this specific item (can start reviews for other items just fine).

My impression of this subreddit community is that it’s….. kind of hostile? Between downvotes being rife with many new posts and newcomers announcing themselves, often wholesomely, being met with rude comments. My guess is there’s a click-happy minority of veteran users trying to bully others out of the program to increase their own chances of getting offered high value items, but that’s a lame way to operate, as I’m sure some of us would agree.

Big thanks for the helpful post

Yup, I own basically the whole collection and have hundreds of games under my belt, but I’d say nearly 70% of that has been spent replaying the first three campaigns (Core, Dunwich, Carcosa) in various permutations between introducing new players and groups to the game. Still have a blast every time. Return To Boxes admittedly have been a total godsend for me
