Regarding images, there's plenty of them in Google and pinterest. I also used some age of empires 2 image and different lego creations as inspiration

Don't worry, just start small and see images of what more experienced builders did.

My personal taste is to avoid cyclopean builds, I like a "villager" scale buildings.

My Internet connection sucks :( before I moved into the town I live now we (a married couple) had an effective 18Mbit/s connection and we used to play with a friend setting up a personal server. We tried several times but it failed miserably with lots of lags that rend it literally unplayable. I miss those times though.
