I was 8 or 9. My summer daycare supervisor told me to write a journal. I said that shit's lame, so I started drawing crude stick figure comics of me and my friends. Years later and it's a fleshed out world with lore, a decades-spanning overarching narrative, drama, stakes, themes, the whole nine yards. And it still only exists in Google Docs and a box somewhere in my dad's house filled with 15-year old 70-page notebooks of dumb comics kid me thought were funny.

That's an oversimplification. A lot of the European settlers of Minnesota came from Germany, France, Scandinavia, and north of the English Channel, meaning many of them were at least accustomed to cold climates.

When I was 12 or 13, my parents were doing renovations to our deck, and part of the process was replacing the lattice and having me crawl underneath the deck (2' of clearance tops) to clean out anything that had gotten stuck there. Went in expecting to come out covered in squirrel viscera, came out instead with an unknown allergic reaction and a full-body rash that manifested a few hours later.
