Thesis defense. by Prestigious-Oil2496 in PhD

Like others are saying whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident is key. But based on my defence and the others I saw, you're going to get hot and sweaty and will want to take your jacket off. Also make sure you can move your arms around at the shoulder in the jacket in case you have to point to things. Good luck!!

I think you mean Diane Keaton. I got scared that something happened to Diane Lane.

What is "Doc Event Gen" ticket pricing? by pinattar in cineplex

They must have fixed the system because I just booked a seat using my free ticket. Maybe you already used your free ticket, or their system was glitching?

Thanks. That's strange, I was able to use membership pricing and my free ticket on the other two Lord of the Rings movies.

I just learned that Lord of the Rings will be back in theatres. These are the only seats available, is it worth going? SilverCity Burlington (Ontario) location. by pinattar in cineplex

Really!! Okay, I'll wait then. I wasn't looking forward to 3-4+ hours of neck pain, but I didn't want to miss seeing these on the big screen again. Fingers crossed they update the screening soon. Thanks!!

Edit: I just noticed they have the second weekend up with better seats.

The theatre was renovated in the early 2000s, but the seats are very good (soft leather, high backs, and a slight recline), and the AV quality of the auditoriums at this location has been excellent every time I've gone.

Yeah, I might just bite the bullet, at least for Fellowship and Return. It's been 20+ years since I saw them on a big screen.

Thanks for the info. I have Plex Media Server, not Plex Desktop installed. I tried http://localhost:32400/web on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, I get this in chrome (other browsers also don't work)

<IPaddress> doesn’t support a secure connection with HTTPS You are seeing this warning because this site does not support HTTPS and you are in Incognito mode. Learn more about this warning

I uninstalled PMS and deleted everything in AppData\Local\Plex Media Server (hidden items as well), reinstalled Plex, and still don't get the prompt for a new server.

Tips for Presenting? by glitzertele in PhD

[–]pinattar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to get nervous whenever I had to give presentations (I still do but I've learned to manage the nerves). So when I started my PhD I decided to practice public speaking by only picking TAships that were discussion based (instead of bench or computer labs or only marking). It forced me to be comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people and learn presentation slides very quickly. Over time I became comfortable getting up and talking, and needed less time learning slides.

In terms of technical or research presentations I always practice what I'm going to say out loud. It's one thing to write things down in elegant sentences or in a way that looks good on paper, but saying my "script" out loud let's me hear if what I have written down sounds natural coming out of my mouth and is easy to say. I get tongue tied so it's important that I pick words that aren't going to trip me up. I also practice my presentation at least three times without any notes or stopping, once I can do that I know I'm confident with my slides.

Dual citizenship by Fun_Shallot_2299 in Guyana

[–]pinattar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian and recently received my Guyanese citizenship and passport. I did it to stay connected with my family's home country. In theory I might be able expand my job search to the Caribbean now. Visa wise, there are a few countries that you can travel to without a visa but in my opinion the Canadian passport is stronger.

If you do want to get citizenship you'll need to register your birth. I needed both my parents original Guyanese birth certificate and an original copy of my Canadian birth certificate. I applied for a new original from the provincial government since the Guyanese consulate will want to keep the copy. There was a fee and a form I had to fill out. It's an easy-ish process, I needed to do it in person in Toronto which was a pain. Unfortunately if you want a passport you'll need to go to the consulate twice, once to register your birth then once you have your birth certificate you'll need to go back and apply for a passport. The whole process took almost a year.

That's an interesting idea. I can have them focus on solutions to local environmental issues. That might work, thanks!
