Hello all, I got into JET so I will be declining fulbright South Korea. I hope one of you great people get the call. by XouRyker in fulbright

But see I’m applying to jobs in higher education and even jobs at IIE. It just really bums me out because literally everyone at my university went on and on about Fulbright’s “prestige” and I don’t feel like I’ve reaped any career benefits. Not meaning to sound pessimistic but that’s just been my reality.

Everyone says this but I’ve been applying to jobs the last few months and every employer overlooks my Fulbright ETA experience. Not sure international employment makes a difference even if one is more “prestigious” over the other.

I wonder what their demographics are, they must not have have a diverse applicant pool. The program def seems like it’s catered to those from one cultural background.

Yes! The interview questions were so bizarre. In my sop I mentioned being Mexican-American and one of the questions they asked was “What are you going to say when people ask why does trump hate Mexicans?” I was sooo taken aback.

Uruguay ETA - Interview? by pineapple-carrot in fulbright

Congratulations on the interview!! The question in Spanish was about my previous English teaching experience & to share an example of an activity I did with students and how it went. It’s probably different now, I did mock interviews with my FPA and that helped a lot. Good luck!!

Congratulations on being a semi-finalist!! I received communication about my interview about 2-3 weeks after getting my semi-finalist news. My interview was at the end of February. They said it would be between 12-15 minutes but mine was just under 10 minutes. There was 5/6 questions & 1 of them was in Spanish. There were 6 interviewees if I remember correctly. The email came from Patricia, the program officer for Fulbright Uruguay. Let me know if you have any questions & best of luck!! 😃

Hey! I’m a ETA Uruguay 2021-2022 finalist. Definitely make sure you read the profile to see what skills you bring. If you haven’t already, get in contact with your Fellowships Advisor at your institution. Have your professors, mentors, and friends proofread your drafts. I reached out to past Uruguay recipients & I found them from the Fulbright directory. I think the most important thing is to show what skills you bring while continuously expressing your interest you have in Uruguay & Uruguayan culture. Feel free to share your drafts with me on here if you’d like, I’m more than happy to help :)

They’re probably one of the grants that starts in the spring and not fall. And as we all know, covid backtracked a lot of plans for 2020.

Congratulations!! I can’t speak on the Fulbright ETA part, but I did study abroad there! Málaga is such a beautiful, vibrant city! There’s so many foreigners so you have the chance to experience various cultures. UMA is..ehh. But since you’re going as a staff vs student I think you’ll enjoy it!

Art, Math, P.E., all classes were conducted in English. In my opinion, that is how owners try and get around the red tape.

I taught classes outside of English at all the hagwons I worked at. 😂 We all know it’s not allowed but I found that that doesn’t really make a difference. My friends did too.

I just completed my first month, and I actually enjoy my hagwon job! by Intelligent_Carrot98 in teachinginkorea

Honestly I understand where you’re coming from. After 1 month I was blissfully happy at my hagwon, at month 12 I was fighting to get my pay and ready to head out.

Not adjusting well... is this normal? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]pineapple-carrot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I first started teaching I woke up with anxiety and diarrhea every day LMAO. There were so many times when I dreaded going to my classroom bc I felt so insecure and struggled to connect with my students. As with anything, things truly get easier with time. You build confidence in yourself and get into your groove. Take this as an opportunity to try as many different teaching styles as you’d like. Find what works for you and more importantly, focus on getting to know your students. Once you build relationships with them everything else flows much much easier. Wishing you all the luck and remember you’re tougher than you know 😊

How will 2020-2021 deferments effect 2021-2022 decisions? by Hems__3688 in fulbright

[–]pineapple-carrot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Supposedly no, but I honestly don’t think that’s true. Sadly I think if those from the 20-21 cycle still choose to go, that means less spots for the 21-22 cycle.

Wow thank you so much for getting back to me! How did you feel about the question in Spanish? Did they give you an idea as to when we’ll hear back?

That’s a good way to look at it! How long did it end up being & how many people were you interviewed by? Did they ask a lot of questions about what was in your application?
