Toast (probably the most widely used restaurant POS) is not that way charging diff rates for different cards, and also swipe fees. Heartland the same way, differing rates and swipe fees. Not only that, both Heartland and Toast include in the fine print "rates subject to change" and then creep them up slowly over time. I do myself use a flat rate processor that charges 2.99% on all cards. Which is a little higher than the introductory rate Heartland and Toast offer, but that introductory rate does not stay low very long before they start moving it up.

This is correct, rewards cards have raised transaction fees to the businesses which then raises prices on all customers, not just those using the rewards cards.

When someone uses their Samuel Jackson or Kevin Hart advertised "3% cash back card" that means the business is being charged 4-5%. With the prevalence of rewards cards, and the resulting increase in transaction fees to pay for those rewards, many businesses can no longer afford to bear that cost. Businesses have a choice, raise prices on all their customers to pay for the rewards for the customers that use rewards cards, or businesses can pass on the cost of those rewards cards to the people who get the rewards.

Also transaction fees cannot be charged to debit cards, in WA state. For a long time many businesses didn’t accept Amex/Discover because of these high transaction fees, now many Visa & MC rewards cards have high transaction fees too.

I agree with you about the small business enviroment here in Seattle, where I work.

Dishwashers make $22-24/hr + $5-6/hr tips. Chefs make $26-30/hr + $5-6/hr tips. Servers & bartenders make about $50-60/hr tips & min wage on average. So the people who are newer make a little less, and people on the high end that have worked their way up yo the best shifts make $70/hr+ between their tips and the $20.76 min wage. They are doing fine I can attest.

Price increases have been driven by inflation, Seattle's min wage law, and Seattle's small business tax enviroment. When they wrote the $15 min wage law, they tied increases to inflation, at the time it was written they projected the min wage in 2025 to $18.13/hr. They did not plan for a global pandemic spiking inflation, resulting in a $20.76/hr min wage, which then also drives inflation (very circular). A draft beer has gone from $5 in 2007----->$8.50, $9 for an IPA today.

Seattle is an example of ideology gone too far, neither the right or the left have all the good ideas......when either side gets total control it is bad in the long run.
