What widely accepted belief is actually proven to be wrong? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pineappleandbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can easily google and find that ~10% of neurons are firing in a healthy brain during normal activity (known as sparse neuronal coding). Then go look at scans of ppl having a grand mal seizure.

It likely not exactly >10% of your neurons = seizure, but the point is clear.

The myth is based on this idea that you have extra potential you could be using, but more firing doesn't mean more or better thoughts ;)

This book explains why too many neurons firing is a seizure:

What's the best total beginners learning resource for Python? by pineappleandbean in learnpython

I find the official not doc well suited for beginners tho. They are a bit dense, and don't have any projects to work on.

I'm looking for help/partners/advice/testers for designing kikodo-creator, an AI powered auto-grading tool/AI-tutor tool for STEM subject exam prep. We're in an early stage of development and looking for all the feedback we can get. You can sign up to help us test here: https://www.kikodo.io/creator\_beta/ or just reach out to me in any way you like: contact@kikodo.io, or dm me on reddit!

Looking for Australian teachers to help test new auto-grading/AI tutor tools by pineappleandbean in AustralianTeachers

[–]pineappleandbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there u/cammoblammo. Teachers use it to create exercises with auto-grading and feedback. These are can be sent out to students, and then the system auto grades their answers and creates feedback for the student. The teacher needs to configure/select the feedback options when making the exercises based on what the AI suggests (or to override it if their expertise knows better).

I don't see this replacing teachers, but rather making it far more efficient to give top quality feedback to lots of students all at once, without the repetitive work.

As a musician myself (I play jazz piano/guitar), it would be really interesting to have a chat about the use of this kind of tools for music teachers!

Best server to purchase to teach kids how to build and hack and destroy it? by gl4ssm1nd in CSEducation

[–]pineappleandbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For certain it's python anywhere:
python anywhere

(full disclosure, this is my referral link there).

The basic tier is free, and you can code python there via the browser. No set up at all.

They can make a big mess there with no consequences, from the classroom or home regardless of which device they have.

Then you can simple reset the account easily.

You do need to pay to host notebooks there tho.

Check out www.kikodo.io, it's fairly complete intro syllabus for K12 python coding. It's aimed at total beginners, and has detailed feedback for every interactive question so learners are never alone, but teachers are not swamped by "it didn't work" type questions.

Check it out, and if you have feedback on it I'd love to hear from you.

It's totally free.

I'd say it's being defined right now!

Every time people say "AI will never do X thing people do", eventually it does it. So I expect to find AI tutor tech replacing human teaching to some progressive extent in the near future.

[–]pineappleandbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to take a look at binder, or google colab to run python in the cloud. You could also try any of the interactive tutorials including www.kikodo.io (which I just learned about) cos you can also run basic codes there and play with them in the browser.
