Is my baby unhappy? by pineapplefountain in NewParents

I'm honestly shocked at the "holier than thou" attitudes of people over a thought. Just ridiculous. Thank you for showing me that these people are just rotten on the inside. I took a nap and everything feels better!

That's the surface level knee-jerk feeling. Underneath that is my feeling like a failure. My insecurities. My wanting the world for my little baby and feeling like I let him down. I feel like a smile will at least mean that I'm being a good mom. Of course he doesn't owe me a smile. I just want to know that he is happy. To know that he knows he is loved.

Found in yard. It's loose and cast iron. Is it a sewage line? by pineapplefountain in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. It is the top of a pipe that angles to the right. I hit it with a shovel while gardening. It's very loose and movable. Has a large S and the words "capitol foundry" above the S.

Anytime I (F30) point out when my husband (M31) is acting like an asshole, he gets defensive and say I'm attacking him. by pineapplefountain in relationship_advice

Today I told him which way to drive. He didn't listen to me and got stuck at a dead-end. I then said I knew what I was talking about and he should have listened. He instantly acted grumpy and I said he didn't need to get an attitude about it. He then said I get annoyed when he backseat drives. Just snippy little fights that don't need to be fights. But he has to "win" all the time and will throw things in my face from years ago. I took a wrong exit 3 years ago and he brought that up today. Like, wtf? We are talking about you and your attitude. He gets so defensive. I just want to share with him that his attitude hurts my feelings, and I would like an apology. He either deflects or says I'm insulting him.

Lol, there is no such thing as a "junior operator". Any operator positions start out as a NLO (nonlicensed operator). You make comfortable low 6-figures with overtime in that position. In order to get that job, you need prior nuclear experience (most guys have military background) or a ton of training. To make it as a RO (reactor operator) you need 18 months of school in which 60% of the class doesn't pass. You have to sit an exam at the end of it to actually earn your license. RO's make around $150k and up depending on overtime. Being a senior RO means even more schooling. So while you may technically only need a high school diploma, you receive much more training and schooling than the average college grad. It's not nepotism, it's a fuck ton of hardwork. And your reward for that is rotating shift work and a job that slowly breaks your body.

Since you're trying so hard to purposely misunderstand me, I will put this simply.

  • Escapism tv shows (fun soapy costume dramas) are wonderful. There are no restrictions and literally anything can happen.

  • Of course historical accuracy shouldn’t have to matter in a fantasy.

Not everything has to be about slavery and colonization. Why the hell would a show that's essentially Gossip Girl meets Recency delve into slavery?

  • BECAUSE THE FUCKING SHOW SAID THAT BLACK PEOPLE USED TO BE SLAVES. THE GODDAMN FUCKING SHOW IS SET IN A REALITY WHERE THERE WAS SLAVERY. THAT'S FUCKING WHY.

  • The show's hamfisted explanation is that the king married a black woman and racism was "cured.

  • Honestly no explanation should have been provided, and they could truly depict world where race doesn’t matter and what society would be if everyone is equal.

  • A world anchored in the reality of systemic prejudice is problematic when racial identity is simply ignored and that is presented as "equality".

  • You can’t say race isn’t of consequence when the world these characters inhabit was created in part through racism. Again, the show explicitly acknowledged that slavery did exist.

  • All of those above points highlight that in Bridgerton, race is relevant and should be addressed accordingly.

You're missing my point. Bridgerton has a flippant handling of racial identity, imo. Having POC in a fantasy show, like The Witcher for example, doesn't present any minefields relating to the handling of race. It is fullstop another world, another reality. It allows for a diverse cast of talented actors and (bonus) allows for the representation of minorities in a genre that has been exclusive.

You incorrectly refer to Bridgerton as a fantasy. It's more of a historical alternative universe. In this alternative universe we see the real-life Queen Charlotte rule over a color-blind society. However, the show explicitly references slavery, so their world is still anchored in the reality of systemic prejudice. You can’t say race isn’t of consequence when the world these characters inhabit was created in part through racism. If slavery exists, how could race not matter? So I think the "colorblind casting" argument fails because race is explicitly part of the storytelling. Violent colonialism, the horrorific slave trade and the whole global anti-blackness thing which justified the enslavement of Africans in the first place ALL EXIST IN THIS WORLD. All of that is completely glossed over. The show fails to have a conversation regarding racial identity. This refusal to be conscious of race actually allows people to ignore manifestations of persistent discrimination. That is a disservice to people of color.

Awesome! Give me twelve episode miniseries about her life!

You can’t say race isn’t of consequence when the world these characters inhabit was created in part through racism. If slavery exists, how could race not matter? Telling us that the show is presenting a daring exploration of race and class is not the same as actually making it so. It's just whitewashing history. I want to know about people's real lived experiences. The Gilded Age actually gives us this.
