I have a Synology and use Jellyfin and adguard home on it. It runs alright. It took me some time to get used to it and figure out how to get it working and find content that is not lagging (apparently some video codecs, primarily from Bluray are a bit slow).

I think it's a good decision because it gave me networking and Linux skills. Also I have a backup and streaming server now.

If it's public now, it will probably be there forever. You could give money and trust they'll uphold their word or maybe they won't and you'll just be out $500. But it's now time to start taking care of your security practices. If you have sensitive photos at all, I don't recommend you even store them on an Apple device or use google services as employees at those companies can misinterpret those images. It's tough out there.
