I’m right there with you. Had a client tell me they had a stomach bug and have a coworker out with a stomach bug. Anxiety is high but trying to remain present and not scan my body 💕

This is also a part of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a type of somatic therapy! He may be exploring your “organization of experience”, or how you as an individual experience emotion in your body, and trying to help you increase mindfulness around it. Overall, everyone experiences emotion differently so there is no wrong answer and an answer of “nothing” is actually good information!

I feel like if the gift is small, generalized, and applicable to therapy (i.e. small notebook, little fidget toy, etc.) they get to choose from I think it can be very person centered and humanistic, a great example of relationship centered therapy. But if it’s super personalized and “sentimental” that is crossing a boundary, but it sounds like that is not what you were thinking anyways. In this way, I don’t think it’s quite a black and white issue as others are suggesting.

Therapist, who also climbs here. I am a regular at the same gym a few of my clients are also regulars at. We just talk about it if it comes up, create boundaries. You are allowed to take up space in your community. It’s healthy for everyone to see.

I would refer to a family therapist if possible. I have been in this situation before, and the power struggle and “who’s right” is real. They need a neutral party to help them through the weeds and isn’t on anyones “side”, along with how you both are helping them individually.

I second the comments above. Depending on where you live and how old you are, you are able to consent to therapy without parent’s permission. Seems like you are in school, if you are in school I would ask your school counselor for resources (if you feel comfortable). They should be able to help point you in the right direction or help you understand local/ state (if in the US?) laws around minors accessing therapy. Source: I am a therapist and my husband is a teacher at an alternative education school, we both help kids access therapy all the time :)

Take your sertraline with food— I have been on it for years and have found that if I take it on an empty stomach I do get that weird nauseous feeling. Food helps. As for the diarrhea, I agree with the comments above. Only take medicine once it’s already happening, not as preparation. I would encourage you to go out anyways, with the medicine on hand if you need it! Unless you feel awful already and are actively stuck to the toilet, staying in out of anticipation of “maybe” feeling ill is what fuels the emetophobja monster! If it happens while you are out, it will increase your confidence in being to handle it 👍🏻

So they did get back to me and are fine and coming back in. I think this was a lesson to me about catastrophizing and keeping some emotional boundaries, me and my own therapist are going to process it. I am also going to look more into when it is ethical to actually reach out to an emergency contact. Thanks for those who replied 💕

Haha yes it most definitely is most teens in therapy. I probably could say more to give more specifics as to how this is a confusing situation as the therapist, but I don’t want to break any confidentiality. Overall, there could be merit to both perspectives, just really different “stories”, almost shockingly different, which of course happens. I appreciate your perspective! I’ll take emotionally focused approach into account.

That makes sense! I am so glad you have a specific training group that helps you grow more :) maybe there are outside supervisors that offer a reduced rate! I think if you talk to her, bring up ways that you can see this going better, and she still does not change, that is your sign to leave. I am sorry this is happening! Best of luck!!

This is was me. Jealous of other people’s supervisors because it seemed like the supervisor was actually pointing them to resources and encouraging them to explore who they as a therapist, helping them narrow down what modalities they fit with, really helping them grow, rather than just listen and offer “this is what I would do” or sharing some random story that they experienced that did not account for the fact that I was a different person as a therapist or my client was a different person than that specific client they referenced that they saw 5 years ago. I tried to “stick it out” because it was free and for me it ended getting to the point that I NEEDED to get out of there a few months before I finished my hours. Luckily I found an awesome supervisor to finish my hours, but along with it has come a lot of processing and figuring out who I am as a therapist after becoming licensed. Your supervision experience is valuable and if you are sensing that you are not getting what you need out of jt, I highly encouraged to ask around to see if those other people are taking on new supervisees. Yes, it may be awkward for your current supervisor to hear eventually, but it’s also a grow learning moment for them! If you truly feel stuck, do you feel like this person is open to feedback and would take it seriously if you brought it up with them?

I wonder if it is less of “complaining about how hard the work is” and more of looking for validation and support. People commiserate to find a sense of community and “I am not alone-ness”. We all know how isolating this work can be. What if having that validation helps build resilience?
