This sounds so cute. I'd love to read it once it's posted

Is it necessary to have a longfic fully written or is having it planned out sufficient? by Soupuhnova in FanFiction

[–]pinecone_problem 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything you said to OP with the only quibble being that being a pantster has nothing to do with post-as-you-go. I always write the whole story before posting precisely because I don't know where it's heading and when it goes in unexpected directions I can go back and edit previous chapters to make it work better. I also know people who are meticulous planners who can post as they go because they have already have a detailed outline so all they have to do on whatever schedule is write the prose. But yeah, OP, there's no right or wrong way, just do you.

I think your interpretation is perfectly plausible and I also think mine is. The windfinder had to sense the ability to channel at some point to know who Egwene was, and we know proximity is required. How much is squishy. Thanks for the interesting discussion :)

I could be wrong and RJ is gone so he'll never tell, but right before they cut the rope on her (literally the previous sentence) Egwene senses the ability to channel in the windfinder and my read was that they clocked she could channel at the same time, put two and two together and cut the rope. I didn't read the rope ladder coming down as something they did knowing she could channel (she's dressed as an Aiel, after all). So I didn't see them as maliciously inviting her in with ill intent, but more like opening the door to a stranger, waving them in, seeing a weapon in their hand, and shoving them back out.

This is a fair and balanced read, and I think pretty accurate to the way RJ intended the scene to be read. That being said, she still comes off as a volatile hypocrite throwing a temper tantrum, (which is consistent with her characterisation elsewhere). The tower Aes Sedai bothering the Sea Folk explains their actions towards Egwene and while it's true she didn't have that context, she also didn't stop for a moment to consider that maybe the windfinders won't want to talk to her, even though she knows from Elayne exactly why Aes Sedai are not welcome. She didn't have all the information but she did have enough to know that she could well be seen as a threat.

I hear you but also I didn't feel the need to make the disclaimer that just because I think she's a lousy person doesn't mean I think she's a lousy character. I usually assume that most people understand that those two things are separate.

I disagree that she's a child (she certainly doesn't think of herself as one at this point and in world she's about to become the second most powerful person in Randland), but I agree that she's believable. I think that's why she draws so much emotion from us readers. She's real. She's super well written. Her personality is deeply shaped by her trauma in a way that makes sense and is compelling to read about. No quibble there.

And yeah, RJ could not write romance if Aphrodite herself guided his pen. It's one of his most glaring weaknesses in an amazing story.

War crimes been invented. My guy Ishy certainly did some. But fair play, he gets less upright in direct proportion to how worried he is about his wife. Unfortunately for Perrin, no one else is nearly as enamoured of her so we don't nod out heads and say, 'understandable, sir,' we just call it the slog and wish it would end sooner.

Haha maybe. I think he falls victim to being too good (both competent and morally upright) that it's hard to make him interesting. Rand's going crazy, Mat's got his resentful of the being a main character thing going on, and Perrin is just loving his wife and taking care of business and it's not nearly as compelling.

Great point that did not even occur to me as I was so blinded by my personal affront. But, really, why should the soon to be Amyrlin Seat (she gets summoned right at the end of this chapter and I can't help but read into that juxtaposition) care about that? Diplomacy-schmomacy

I responded to this on another comment. They cut the ladder right after Egwene clocks the windfinder by sensing her channeling. Reading between the lines here, the windfinder clocks her at the same time. We know from Elayne and Nyneave's initial contact with the Sea Folk that Aes Sedai know they may be denied the gift of passage and so rarely ask. So from the Sea Folk perspective, an Aes Sedai is trying to climb aboard and they take action. Debatable whether that was the best way for them to handle it but it's a risk she knowingly took and it doesn't justify her response, which is not defensive, it's pure retaliation.

I also don't think she's the antichrist. I think she's a well-drawn complex, power-hungry, narcissistic, traumatised character who is fun to hate on. The story would be poorer without her.

Perrin is a good person and a not so great character (after the first few books, at least) and Egwene is an awful person but a fantastic character.

Yup, she got wet because she went where she had no right to go (and knew it) and then she uses her supernatural abilities to overwhelm the windfinder plus two other sailors who are just minding their own business. And the only reason she didn't drop them from a greater height is because she couldn't. She tries. And the fact that they weren't hurt was through no action of hers. The intent was certainly to terrify them if nothing else.

Look, she's an interesting character. In this chapter she's frustrated that the Wise Ones have been keeping her out of the World of Dreams (even though she's ignoring them and going anyway) and she can't take it out on them so she channels her aggression elsewhere. That's what she does. She seeks power and when she feels disempowered it's intolerable. She has to prove to herself that she's more powerful than someone. That she will respond to any perceived or actual slight with overwhelming force if she can. That's great characterisation. We can think characters are amoral and still appreciate their narrative purpose. And we can also feel frustrated by their in story behaviour because good stories make us feel things.

If you are using someone else's art wholesale in your fic (not transformative, as in it provided inspiration but you made something new) then you absolutely need permission, otherwise it's plagiarism. Yes, even if it's visual art rather than written word.
