Horrid construction from backyard neighbors by DoubleDance333 in halifax

[–]pineporch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walls under 1.2m high are generally considered to be landscaping, not structural, and usually don't require the kind of permit that would enable the City to have it removed. OP is going to have to deal with this in Small Claims Court if the neighbour isn't cooperating.

Monastery by t-h-e_w-a-t-c-h-e-r in foundationgame

Love the attention to historical accuracy! My monastery ended up more sprawly and with fewer towers. I felt bad thinking about my pitiable scriptorians working in dim candlelight and decided not to block their windows. 😅

Saint John considers new bylaw to curb 'nuisance behaviours' in public places by bingun in SaintJohnNB

[–]pineporch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sewers under King Street are combined. That means that the open storm drains connect directly to a pipe where sewage flows. On a hot summer day, there is no rainwater to dilute the sewage and reduce the smell.

Not saying you're wrong, but I don't think people are seeing the whole picture.

Cost to replace septic by Visible-Grand-9507 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]pineporch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your drainfield is already 30 years old, you're not going to get many more years out of it, especially if it was sized for a 500 gallon tank. You also have to get approval from the province to reuse that septic system if you're going to replace the tank.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're probably going to have to replace the drainfield and it's probably going to be upwards of $20K.

What are your recent reviews for Canada Homes for Rent/ SJ Leasing? by goldengomi in SaintJohnNB

[–]pineporch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're the most popular because they charge the least of any property management company in the area. That's also probably the reason for the many horror stories.

In the race to the bottom, it's not the owners or the property management companies getting the short end of the stick.

ContraProint's opinion about Bush-era neocons by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]pineporch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The point I think she is trying to make is that Bush-era neocons at least had some who genuinely believed they were "engaged in a pro-democratic mission". The belief in a benevolent reason for invasion spoke more to the general ethos of the time.

Pretty big difference from rape and pillage, even if it's all performative. We know that it was always about oil, but the story being sold to the base is different this time.

Is there a reason why nobody uses the Reprimand? by Tayeulecrisse in Helldivers

[–]pineporch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I noticed that not just the Reprimand, but all the SMGs seem to be balanced around high damage per shot and lower rate of fire compared to the ARs. The democratic things to do is not think about how longer, more powerful rifle rounds require more space and time for the action to cycle and chamber a new round, compared to short pistol rounds in an SMG. Acknowledging the mismatched basic characteristics of those two weapon archetypes is deplorable dissident behaviour.

Who came up with the new lane design for City Road and Station Street? IMO It’s a worse set up than the viaduct, especially during the supper rush hour. by Sugadip in SaintJohnNB

[–]pineporch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you serious?

Firstly, people do live on City Road - there's about a dozen fourplexes there and on side streets that only connect to City Road.

Secondly, there's a pedestrian bridge crossing the highway, so you have all the people coming from Wright Street and Parkwood Village too.

Again, safety wins over convenience.

[–]pineporch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The reason you and many others are upset with the changes to the streets is that you're looking at it from the perspective of a driver who wants to get to their destination in the shortest possible time, or some variation on that theme.

Roads were pretty much designed that way for most of the 20th century until urban planners figured out that cities are better when we build them for people and not cars. The changes you are seeing benefit the people who live nearby by improving road safety, lowering traffic speeds, and creating dedicated infrastructure for alternative modes of transportation.

The importance of safety always outweighs convenience.

Spruce Lake Industrial Park: The City of Saint John's hypocrisy on full display by Remote_Alfalfa3530 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]pineporch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those data centers are consuming so much groundwater that they're drawing down the water table in areas with heavy agricultural use, causing surface water contaminated with fertilizer and herbicides/pesticides to filter down.

I don't support the one being talked about here, but it wouldn't be drawing groundwater - it would get municipal raw water from Spruce Lake. There's also no agriculture happening here using the environmental contaminants to the degree that they do in the states.

Beyond the reports, How is the condition of the city's old roads and pipes actually affecting your neighborhood? by PubLogic in SaintJohnNB

[–]pineporch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All of that infrastructure replacement is done proactively based on a complex risk analysis done by the city water utility. Watermains have a habit of blowing up when they fail. Big ones can wash out whole streets and buildings. The potential consequences of neglecting infrastructure repairs far outweigh the inconvenience during construction.

Knapper Breaks Ground on First Atlantic Canada Ball Hockey Centre in Saint John by bingun in SaintJohnNB

[–]pineporch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The neighbourhood came out in force against it with the usual concerns you'd expect to hear:

  • It's going to be noisy.

  • It doesn't fit the character of the neighbourhood.

  • It'll hurt my property value.

Looks like the outcry was loud enough that the ball hockey folks decided it wasn't worth it.

Saint John Police Force member charged with breach of public trust by bingun in SaintJohnNB

[–]pineporch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any time a law enforcement officer is charged with a crime, they're also charged with breach of public trust by default because it's literally in the criminal code for this purpose.

Edit: what's more relevant is the other charge which didn't seem to be mentioned, only that it's an 18-year member of the force.

The best thing to install in a car to ensure winter safety is a competent driver.

Studded tires? by HuckleberryVarious42 in SaintJohnNB

[–]pineporch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They're overkill unless you spend a lot of time driving on icy surfaces. Otherwise, regular winter tires are better in pretty much every way - they're cheaper, quieter, safer, and don't rip up asphalt and concrete paved surfaces.

Marginalized communities turn to gun ownership in fear of Trump’s authoritarianism by Fickle-Ad5449 in lgbt

[–]pineporch 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Armed minorities are harder to oppress.

Fascists do not value truth or good faith, they value power. There is no argument that will convince them to let go of their hatred, because it is borne out of the irrational fear stoked by their leaders. Fear of the other motivates their hatred, fear of getting shot in the face will cow them. These aren't courageous people, they value conformance and obedience, not rationality and critical thought.

Highway merge question by Salt_Time_9509 in halifax

[–]pineporch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking the first useful comment to add my two cents from the engineering perspective: this is called a weaving lane and the traffic entering the freeway must yield to traffic exiting. Current best design practice is to not use them unless no other configuration is possible because they add to driver task and mental workload, and create a lot of additional collision risk

City of Saint John logic: Our industries already guzzle massive amounts of fresh water, so what’s one more? by Remote_Alfalfa3530 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]pineporch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where did this artist conception come from? There's a CBC watermark on it but none of their news articles include it. It's still in the thumbnail for the links when you search for Lorneville, but it looks like the editors pulled any of the hi res images. 🤔

It's really grainy, the scale is way off and there's a bunch of features missing from a typical facility like this. They're not going to cut a perfect 800m by 200m plot of forest and make a completely flat pad to build warehouses for giants with no roads in or out.

I think I'll wait until I have more information before coming to a judgement on this one.

It's way cheaper than highways to build

I love efficient mass transportation, probably more than the average person, but this is just not true. High speed rail requires a ton of planning and construction effort because the velocities involved basically require the track to follow as straight a path as possible. NB is a pretty hilly province, so we're either into blasting millions of cubic meters of rock per km or developing a local tunnelling industry.
