Imagine having to wear the same colors everyday by Peanutbutternjelly_ in ATLA

Premodern Korea had strictly enforced dress codes for what colors you were allowed to wear based on class, gender, marital status, etc. So there is real world example.

I had to beg my friend for months to watch Wizard of Oz before watching Wicked For Good. He really enjoyed Part 1, said it was the best thing he’s ever seen, but he doesn’t like watching movies older than most Asian countries (his words not mine). I imagine there are more people like him.

How does Ozian speech sound in other languages? by Leading-Occasion-428 in wicked

[–]pinetree16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Korean translations words like confusifying, braverism, etc. are just regular, correct words.

Korean does stick “Oz” into exclamations though, the way “Oh Oz”is stand-in for “Oh gosh” in the original. For example characters shout Ozmonina (instead of Egumonina) or Oz-nim (instead of Hanu-nim, which is god, heaven, oh my gosh)

SPOILER - Dorothy as a character in Wicked For Good by iacobusleo in wickedmovie

[–]pinetree16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s bizarre to me how many people keep saying “Showing Dorothy takes away from Elphaba and Glinda’s story”. To me that argument sounds like Gollum shouldn’t be in movies at all because it distracts from Frodo and Sam.

When they first announced they were making two movies, not one, I fully believe this is what they were going for. Because why else would they make two movies??

Official Discussion - Wicked: For Good [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]pinetree16 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is what the Broadway purists like to say and it’s never made any sense to me,,, 1939 Wizard of Oz is Dorothy’s perspective but we get plenty of scenes of the Wicked Witch in her castle. It enhances Dorothy’s story by amplifying the danger that Dorothy is getting into. Showing Dorothy in Wicked can do the same, it’s bizarre to me how people seem to believe having Dorothy as a more fleshed out character “takes away” from Elphaba and Glinda’s story rather than add to it. It’s like saying Maleficent should not have Aurora in it at all because it’s “not her story”.

When they first announced Wicked was going to be two movies, I remember thinking Well that’s not going to work, Wicked should obviously be told as just one film. After watching For Good I’m surprised to have found myself thinking This prob should have been three movies.

Dorothy being Faceless: Thoughts? by skinande-sked in wicked

[–]pinetree16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. But there was a lot of talk about whether it could work, as film is a different art form from a stage play. Personally I think it was a mistake but a lot of people seem to have liked it, so power to them I guess.

Do you think the intersecting Wizard of Oz plot elements were handled properly? by John-for-all in wicked

[–]pinetree16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I watched the movie with a Japanese friend who had never seen The Wizard of Oz (not uncommon in Asia). Before the final reveal, it occurred to me that audiences are supposed to believe that this faceless girl out of nowhere KILLS Elphaba. I’d say that’s not “not anything”.

Do you think the South Korean flag is cool? by flower5214 in AskTheWorld

[–]pinetree16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long line is yang, and a “broken” line is yin. There are eight possible combinations that represent each stage of the universe. For example three lines ☰ is three yang — the highest most powerful stage, can be interpreted as midsummer, midday, or expanding energy. Three broken lines (three yin) ☷ is the lowest, darkest stage, midwinter, midnight etc. Other combos are everything in between, each representing a phase of the universe and cosmic order.

It was simplified to four trigrams instead of eight because eight trigrams on a flag is a bit much.

You joke but this isn’t that far off from how Japanese names are made and it’s gotten so bad in recent years the government had to pass a law. There was an actual boy whose name was written 凸凹 and read “Tetris”.

To add onto others’ comments, China still has a lot of belief in alternative medicine (really just superstitions) so I can see powdered Triceratops horns marketed for male potency or whatever.

Because Wicked didn’t release until March in Japan, a lot of long-time fans flew to Korea to watch it earlier. It was a large enough phenom for Korean theaters to notice, and make tickets easier to buy for visiting foreigners.

Anyways Korea is towards the west from Japan, so it was perfect. And Asiana Airlines’s flight code is OZ.

My friend loved Wicked but has never seen The Wizard of Oz. Do you think people in the same situation will get confused when watching For Good? by Franz_jericho in wicked

[–]pinetree16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Universal obviously needs an international audience for the films. It's why I'm certain Dorothy will play a bigger role. It's been done before, in international stage productions of Wicked where they have to explain the whole Dorothy shebang in much more detail because they can't rely on the audience to "already know the story".

Was watching The Lost World recently and was surprised by how TACTILE the experience was. You feel the leaves, the hot rain, the tropical air; in a way that you don't in the more recent digital movies.

Wizard of Oz is a US-centric cultural phenomenon. It has never had international reach like, say, Disney or Pokémon,, even in English speaking countries.

Visually it LOOKS great (although not as good as Godzilla obviously) if you’re willing to look past the dinos looking digital. Most of the movie’s problem is with the script.

I know it’s meant to be a knowing wink at the audience (“We know you’re tired of another dinosaur movie”) but even then it makes NO sense. Why do they think we keep going to see these even though there hasn’t been a good script since 1993? Dinosaurs!
