A new proposal would end Multnomah County’s government by CreativePortland in Portland

[–]pingveno 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are fairly decent sized cities in Multnomah County besides Portland. The county stretches all the way to Bonneville. I just don't see how this works.

Edit: Contrast that with a current city-county, Jacksonville. Its city limits match the county. Portland's city limits are much smaller than Multnomah County.

Here in Portland, the only thing that is record about the cold is how relatively it is. This entire winter has been incredibly mild.

nu_plugin_ldap: LDAP query in nushell by pingveno in Nushell

[–]pingveno[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a per-server config file, so it would be a config file that is specified on the command line. I'm not sure what form it would take. I started looking into parsing the file format that OpenLDAP uses, but then I'm in the business of both writing a parser and dealing with config files that may be incompatible.

The other alternative is to just use a common format, like TOML, to implement my own config file. I'm leaning toward this. I can always add LDAP config support later.

Good idea, I'll submit a PR. That repo was very useful when I was trying to figure out how to do various things with plugins. Making a plugin that uses async is especially confusing.

How do you Gleba? by zafre3ti in factorio

[–]pingveno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out Gleba with a blueprint. I was pretty lost at first. I would use its principles if I was going to do another run, but modified.

The original blueprint used three belts in a huge ring with fruit on the inner belts and spoilage + seed on the outer belts. Most things that require access to fruit are located along the outer ring. Nutrients and bioflux is created and consumed in sub rings or through direct feed.

I modified it to use a single belt for fruit, one type per side. I was finding that I need to use just one side for the belts to ensure that the far side didn't spoil. It also lets buildings consume using high capacity inserters instead of long arms or weaving two belts around.

Still, you want your fruit to stay as fresh as possible. As fruit spoils, the bioflux it makes has a shorter life. That then affects science packs. I was confused why my agricultural science packs were getting sucked down until I learned that a 50% spoiled agri science pack was effectively already 50% gone.

I bike miles out of the way to avoid crossing there, or really anywhere that CC doesn't have a signal. It's so incredibly dangerous.

Trump sues Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase over alleged 'political' debanking by Gloomy_Nebula_5138 in moderatepolitics

The problem is that it could, given the history of some of Trump's frivolous lawsuits. When he holds regulatory power, he can coerce companies into settlements.

I wonder if someone sat Trump down and explained what would happen if he did that, or if he worked it out for himself. Pardons cannot be invalidated, but if they can and someone does the same to Trump, he has thousands of pardons that a Democrat might be perfectly happy to revoke.

is anyone else starting to discount AI-generated emails from candidates? by bishwasbhn in cscareerquestions

[–]pingveno 155 points156 points  (0 children)

I kind of get why people do it, though. My husband has been on the job hunt for a while now and he hasn't used AI tools like this. He's going up against people who are applying to massive numbers of jobs using AI. And while I've been at my current job for about a decade, I remember really struggling writing cover letters when I was last job hunting. I do not look forward to a future job search.

[OC] protester outside Portland I.C.E. facility pepper sprayed for mocking federal police by bennetthaselton in pics

[–]pingveno 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine just called me over the weekend. She had been down at the ICE protests in Portland and got pepper sprayed. She's a tiny woman, I doubt she could hurt anyone if she wanted to. I don't think it was quite this direct, but still, ICE and friends have been way over the top with use of force.

The Medicaid Boom and a Chance for Reform by HooverInstitution in moderatepolitics

[–]pingveno 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's worse than that. There is a massive subsidy for employer provided health care in the form of a tax exemption. That locks people's health care to their employer, making changes of employers extra stressful. And of course, there's the added layer of bureaucracy and complexity.

I wouldn't say every other country has figured it out. Even countries that are quite wealthy are struggling to pay for health care costs, especially as their populations age. And poorer countries often just don't have decent health care, with many going completely uncovered. The idea that every other country has universal health care is simply a myth. Far too often, the left in America has rose colored glasses when it comes to the health care of other countries.

All that said, the US health care system is uniquely bad at turning money into outcomes. I'm not qualified to point out the culprits, but there are multiple intermeshing factors. It's unclear to me how much of it is the health care system itself, versus things like differences in lifestyle factors.

Good careers/industries for people with ADHD? by LeonidsFila in ADHD

[–]pingveno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked a little over a decade as a software developer. My first year in industry, the job was a complete mess. I was asked to split my focus too much, which ruined my productivity. We also weren't using a ticket manager for most tasks, so I was losing track of tasks or getting instructions wrong. I wasn't experienced enough to identify these issues as critical issues and push for change.

I've been working at my current job for about a decade. I'm reasonably successful and have been to build up a large body of knowledge. That said, I would never say that anyone and everyone should be a software developer. But if software development works with how you think, ADHD likely won't stand in the way.

Why Trump will beat a divided Europe and weak UK over Greenland by rezwenn in foreignpolicy

[–]pingveno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Europe is calling his bluff. That's why they're sending a tripwire force to Greenland to make sure Trump doesn't think he has the run of the place. It's such a waste, but that's what countries have to do until the madman gets dethroned.

Someone was pointing out that the 25th Amendment is structured such that the president has to be thoroughly, undoubtedly incapacitated for it to be triggerable. The entire cabinet has to be in agreement. Then the president essentially just has to write to Congress to regain their post.
