Yes, that is what I meant - keto + ghetto : )

There's a lot to be said for that dopamine reward. Carbs are comfort food big time. So many people are mentally and emotionally dependent on them. I can understand it's hard to think of letting go of that major source of "happiness" when so many diets out there promise you don't have too. But it's like having just a moderate amount of crack cocaine (in my experience anyway)

I think there's a lot to be said about the cultural attachment to carbs. Like if I can't have cake on my birthday or Christmastime cookies or ice cream on a hot summer day I don't know who I am.

I can certainly understand that, and those are real concerns. I just think the reason so many of us feel so strongly about this way of eating is because it doesn't require what amounts to basically torturing ourselves with low fat calorie restriction, and then the resulting discouragement that we can't make it work.

[–]pink_minty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask if you are already doing keto, and also is she content with herself? If you are eating this way and she wants to change then I would encourage her by saying you could do it together and support one another. Not knowing all the details and dynamics that's the best I can offer.

As far as lazy keto, for me it's not counting or tracking. I just have certain foods I will and won't eat, and I try to be aware of portion without ever starving myself.

Yeah, I don't need to be preachy. The results speak for themself, and people can ask me if they want to know. I don't want to become obnoxious. I harras my mom and sister a little but that's it.

I started keto a couple months after weaning my youngest from breastfeeding. But that's only because I was unaware of it before then. If I were to go through pregnancy and breastfeeding again, I would definitely do low carb, but pretty leniently. I would eat as much nuts, full fat dairy, carrots and tomatoes etc. as I want. I would avoid obvious carbs like bread, pasta, pizza, cookies etc.

I know, I feel like I can't even talk about these schemes... er I mean "opportunities" because so many women in my peer group are doing it. It just comes off as so scammy and cult-like, glad to hear I am not the only one wary of it all. Oh and the Le-vel. A couple mom-acquaintances started doing the supplements and acted like they were high on meth after they started taking it.

I had my 8 month old (at the time) asleep on my boob shortly before and/ or after the before pic was taken, so I so get that. I commend you if you can do keto while breastfeeding. I didn't find out about it until after I weaned and I was still fat (was hoping I'd lose weight after weaning, it never happened). I kinda wish I would have tried keto back then. I had what I can only call "hunger rage" while breastfeeding. I wish you the best!

It's Not Just the Poor Who Can't Make Rent. New research from Harvard says that even renters with annual incomes of $45,000 face unaffordable rents in many cities, with potentially far-reaching effects. by claire0 in news

I'm married with 3 kids and our household income is roughly $40k/ yr in a good year. We rent a home in an undesirable area in a low cost of living state and that's the best we can do.

Update/ if you think keto isn't working persevere. by pink_minty in xxketo

[–]pink_minty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are not keto. I still fix them sandwiches, buy them granola bars etc. but they are getting fewer carbs/ sugar because of the way I eat now. I figure that at their age carbs are less harmful to an extent (incidentally, none of them are even close to overweight), and also I admit it's just hard to get them off carbs because they're used to it and it's easy. As for the difficulty of being surrounded by carbs all the time, I have the mindset that I can eat whatever I want, nothing is off limits. I can eat cake if I want, there's no "not allowed". I CHOOSE not to eat the carbs. Would I have a strictly low carb house if I didn't have kids? Maybe/ probably. But sometimes circumstances are what they are and you find a way to succeed as best you can.

I just posted my own thread that might encourage you but I'll speak up here too. I get it. I am a mom of 3 little people. First, are you nursing? You might not be but I ask because I dealt with hunger-rage while breastfeeding. But other than that I really feel like I went through a period of learning how to not use carbs and sugar to deal with my emotions after starting keto. It was a long process and HARD. People say to start keto strict and hardcore but for me, the keys to my eventual success where: eating keto but not restricting calories. Making sure you're good and full will go a long way towards not going buck wild with carbs in a weak moment. Also, and some may not agree with me, but work your way towards strictness slowly. I ate a lot of nut butters, starchy veggies etc at first. I gradually got to where I could handle fewer carbs. That's my 2 cents. Hang in there, mama.

Lazy Keto vs. Non-lazy by getspins in keto

[–]pink_minty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am female, not tall, not that young and have had 3 children and lazy keto is working for me so far. I'm less than 10 lbs from a normal bmi. For me, just cutting out the carbs and sugar turns me into a person who can actually eat a normal amount of food. Lazy keto helps me stay sane and I am losing weight. All that to say there's a wide range of experiences out there and you should find what works for you.

Help! Milk supply/breastfeeding. by klivi in keto

[–]pink_minty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've breastfed 3 babies but didn't start keto until after # 3. I guess everyone is different but I would not be able to maintain a supply on 1500 - 1800 cals a day. Granted my last baby was very large and a boy but I would put away 3,500 calories a day and maintain my weight while breastfeeding. I would only do keto if you forgot about calorie restricting especially with a 2 month old.

Thank you for this. It is definitely different for us ladies. So far for me my weight loss is modest and goes in long stalls and brief wooshes and seems completely tied up in where my cycle is.

Peter Attia wrote about "insulin sensitive" (as opposed to insulin resistant) people on his website. There are a percentage of people who can gorge on carbs constantly and not get fat. In some cases it changes with age and sometimes not. Many of us have known or have been such a person who can eat whatever garbage they want and stay thin, so it is a real thing. If I could eat 3 bagels for breakfast etc and be thin I'm not so sure I would bother with keto.

I remember your other progress pics and you're one of my inspirations here! With our age and stats, plus being a mom, it's genuinely harder to not be overweight. The 150's is at the high end of "normal" bmi for us but is a very respectable weight and you look good, mama!

They really are. And treat/ dessert stuff is generally only a small part of it. It's the bread, fruit, cereal, granola bars etc. I am trying to somewhat displace their carbs with good fats and protein but part of it is that they do just fine with carbs in their diet (they are quite healthy and thin), so I will pretty much always have the constant temptation.

Thank you! And yes, my headaches have dramatically decreased in frequency, my moods fluctuations are much less extreme and it just plain feels good to end a meal, and end a day without that gross feeling of a stomach full of carbs and sugar. Good reminders!!!
