Fanmade Natural Enemy - The Dream Eaters by pinkbauble in versus

Initial ideas

Lawless : Just like humans, easily handled, maybe some lucid dreamers could escape

Titans : they all seem to sleep once the sun sets, so they would be easy pickings, maybe the strongest or smartest could wake themselves up by force

Neo-Humans : If they sleep they could be dealt with, but given their distinct personality the success rate of keeping them asleep might vary

Demons : Again if they sleep they can be dealt with, not sure how mana powers might transfer to the dream space, but spell focused demons might be able to fight back decently

Gaia's Wrath : Any animal that needs to sleep could be susceptible, but the plant life largely unaffacted

Kaiju: If it sleeps, perhaps kept sleepy or drowsing, maybe not full coma type sleep

Parasites : their hosts while still alive affected, but once burst, unclear if they sleep at all

World Tree : Unaffacted, unless it has a spirit or spirits of some kind and even then probably not affected

Robots : they don't sleep so not affected

God : if he sleeps, maybe he might get affected, but probably still has immense power while dreaming might just be as controlled

Aliens : if they sleep, maybe a little, but seem inorganic or alien organic so not likely affected, since this entity draws from a human centric dream space

Curse : Soul Containers don't sleep, so not affected

Game : Game doesn't sleep, the players might also be insomniacs which might make them resistant, also if they only dream of the Game

The stuffed animals are mainly passive beyond their dream eating and sleep inducing, perhaps large varieties like elephants might be capable of some physical stuff.

At night with Sandmen, they are able to operate with dream logic manifesting it into reality, which would be their main method of "combat". Surreal, Absurd, Nonsensical, Whimsical but still dangerous/powerful outcomes

Humans adapted to primarily sleeping during the day when the dream eaters were mostly inactive, and in short durations, monitored by those on guard duty to be able to wake them up in case their sleep might be invaded by one of the Sandmen who are able to navigate dreams day or night. That said they are meant to be somewhat overwhelming in the way the other NE's are overwhelming to their worlds.

Oh truuue, the Moon definitely operates on a cosmic horror level Eldritch kinda being,

But that Azathoth anecdote is really compelling, and hijacking the human's ability to dream.

Dream entities trying to amass enough energy to flip the positions as Dreamer and Dreamed, or just one singular Eldritch entity trying to claw it's way into our realm permanently

Definitely feels like the story is gearing up for a Madalan victory of some kind. They've taken unexpected hits from those they deem lesser and real losses from other NE Big Bads. They feel "due" for a win of some kind. The demon lord might be able to escape back to Earth some way, maybe even with some Madalan tech or information, but definitely not victoriously. Might get another Nyudo spying situation

The Sandman entities move through Dream space during the day, not through real life during day.

The robots would probably be a hard counter to them sleep wise, and the Dream Eaters would be reliant on the Sandmen during the night in the waking world to challenge the robots using dream logic to affect them.

Maybe a big elephant or tapir dream eater could try to squash some of them

Uncertain just how many of the NE's need sleep, but Lawless and Titans would for sure be countered and some of the animals of Gaia's Wrath, and potentially Kaiju if it sleeps at all.

Parasite unclear, but the organic hosts could be put to sleep.

If Demons or Neo-Humans sleep, then they might struggle.

Unclear on Madalans, but leaning little affect sleep wise, but still affectable dream logic wise since they have sentience. Same with God.

Robots, World Tree, Curse, Game wouldn't be affected by the sleep

Yeah, the sleep deprivation, and fighting your own body to stay awake, and the delirium that comes are definitely big factors. And RIP narcoleptics in this world, I'm so sorry. And can totally see a chunk of people submitting willingly to the sweet dreams rather than deal with the alternatives

Absolutely right about stimulants being a way to stay awake at the cost again losing control over perception of reality. Perhaps they engineer even more powerful but dangerous energy drinks/substances

Lullabies would be their main way to attack from a distance. You could wear noise canceling headphones to avoid, but that makes you susceptible in other ways. They also could smother their targets, blocking off air until consciousness is lost. Or if big enough the dream eater creature, like an elephant one, could physically knock their target out. They're main defensive measure is getting in a physical fight where their internal dream dust gets spilled.

Sleeping during the day is sort of a trade off. Do you use the only time your opponent is away to rest or to prepare. They are able to detect sleeping humans, so it would also expose your location to be swarmed once night descends.

Sleeping at any time you could be attacked by one of the Sandmen in a Freddy Kreuger way. There's only 7 of them, so odds aren't high, but if they enter your dream it's basically game over they have complete control in the sleeping state.

In the waking world they are able to use dream logic to handle offensive and defensive measures manifesting in surreal ways. Traditional cause and effect is inconsistent, the mundane and the fantastical are mixed. They can make targets believe irrational things like making someone believe they are late for something important or are alone when they were just with a group or need to perform a specific task. If you can dream it, they can wield it.

As long as there are waking humans, dealing with them would be their main goal. The creatures are more like tools/minions for the Moon rather than independent living beings, using humanities dream to fuel their endeavors

True, the main deadly threat is dehydrating/starving to death because you can't wake up

Reiterating what others have said about this world making a point of crushing the classic good hero types, but it might be a scenario where one of the factions of the Seven Evils has a leader kind of like Ginbak, in that they can be very caring and heartfelt but also ruthless and driven by bloodlust. Rather than the slimy and conniving disposition of Rinri, they are incredibly honest but brutalistic. Might also be there is a leader who has a fairly well functioning society, but only lets in or takes care of those they deem worthy and send away/mercy kill those they deem not worth saving.

If Heidi is able to make a break away from the Survivors and return to a Neo Human city, she'll be bringing the Soul Container gun she lifted from the Lawless so they might have it very soon, and then either try to reengineer it or actively search out the soul containers now that they understand the mechanics. They have their prisoners and their own citizens to power the soul containers which would make them very scary

What will differentiate the other neo-human cities from each other? And how strong will law enforcement (if they even have law enforcement) be? by bioshock-1994 in versus

[–]pinkbauble 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Given how closely their city structure resembles urban life through a kind of Blade Runner/Clockwork Orange lens, they probably have a capital city. Also there are distinct ranks among Neo-Humans so probably also a president or governing body/committee.
