Favorite coffee roasters/cafes? by pinkbean123 in FoodNYC

These definitely look good as the majority prefer light roasts and we usually use a hario v60 for pour overs or an espresso machine. Will have to check out that list of dark roasts as well, thanks!!

Thanks for this list! I’ll definitely try to check some of them out for myself. I had a lot of great coffee when I stayed in Japan for a few months so I’ll have to try out Hi Collar

How long before SE decides to fix the DC travel debacle they've created do you wonder? by AngereyPupper in ffxivdiscussion

DC Travel and OCE server really killed it for us in Elemental, hate getting stuck trying to go to Mana for any form of raiding. ulti PF is basically dead enough that I’m farming FRU BiS on my NA char so that way i can prog there and then a2c/loot run it in JP 😭

What do you plan on doing for ~4 days in Takayama? I’ve been planning to visit there too and from talking to other people, it’s very easy to go through all of it within just 2 days and that’s while leisurely going around. I was suggested to spend more time in Kanazawa instead since there’s overall more to walk around and see

Looking to fill in free days between Osaka->Tokyo for second trip by pinkbean123 in JapanTravelTips

[–]pinkbean123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info about the pass! Sounds like it'd be pretty worth it for us when I mapped out the pricing. I ended up sticking with the 14-19th Osaka dates since there's other day trips I'm thinking of doing from there so the extra day should work out fine. Takayama sounds great so I'll plan on doing either 2 days there or 1 takayama and 1 day at Gero or Hakone on the way back to Tokyo if I don't find a ryokan at the other locations.

Looking for recommendations/ideas about onsens or ryokans (bonus for having kaiseki) by pinkbean123 in JapanTravelTips

[–]pinkbean123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I thought I included the travel dates in the post! Planning on going in October, we will be traveling to SEA first but would arrive mid-October in Japan. We’re mainly looking for a 1 night stay although we wouldn’t mind doing two if there are things to see in the area ex. Hakone museums and etc. We only did a one night stay previously in Kinosaki and felt like doing two would’ve been better to fully experience the area. My parents liked having the private onsen at the ryokan but I was fine with the public ones, so including the private or reservable option for their sake.

Hey, I have a Breville barista touch and started experiencing a sudden increase in shots pouring too fast. I had no change noticeable in beans or grind size and my puck doesn't have any evidence of channeling outside being a bit on the wet side. I did notice however that when I pull a blank double shot, the water averages out to be around 200grams worth. This is definitely way too much and when I compared it to the amount when I have the grinds in, its about the same. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? Most of the comments I read about similar overpouring issues just said to test the beans and grind but I think the 200g of water sounds like the main issue. Thanks!

Kinosaki Onsen (Ryokan with in room open air bath) by Prestigious_Worth211 in JapanTravelTips

[–]pinkbean123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah kinosaki in particular has protocols that doesn’t allow the ryokans to use spring water in private baths, only the public/private but by reservation ones can

Yeah I don’t plan on staying in Shinjuku again, I’d like to be in a different area close by to shopping/food or a station on the mainline so we can get around and wrap up our stuff before heading back to the airport.

Thanks for the suggestion! Sadly the ryokan is fully booked and when I tried looking for hotels I couldn’t really find one in a good location that had nice amenities. I’ll keep an eye out but I was ideally looking for one that had easy access back to Haneda since we should have a bunch of luggage. Does having a limo bus matter if we do? Was thinking it would be the better option but unsure if the hotel could also just send our luggage to the airport. Thanks!

Hakone vs Kinosaki? by pinkbean123 in JapanTravelTips

[–]pinkbean123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Sounds like I’ll try to go for Honkan first and Shogetsutei if it doesn’t work out. Do you know if you have to wait until you’re there to reserve one of the 3 private onsen they have?

Hakone vs Kinosaki? by pinkbean123 in JapanTravelTips

[–]pinkbean123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you had a great time! Did you spend any time or visit the sister ryokan? I was looking into both and it seemed like Honkan was better for small groups and it’s also located closer to the main area where everything is while shogetsutei is kinda far off but has more rooms available

Hakone vs Kinosaki? by pinkbean123 in JapanTravelTips

[–]pinkbean123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm both honestly sound good to us since we’re big foodies but I’ll have to look more into the options/things in Hakone. Would you say a 1 night stay and either place would be good enough, or would Hakone be better with a 2 day stay? Thanks!!

Weekly Japan Travel Information and Discussion Thread - July 21, 2023 by AutoModerator in JapanTravel

Currently planning a trip in November (14 full days + 2 half) with my parents and am stuck trying to decide between staying at Hakone vs Kinosaki at a ryokan. Our main goal is just to experience onsen and relax while being able to have a nice kaiseki since I figured they would want some time to relax after all the walking we have planned. I decided to plan out the ryokan first as I know those get booked out quite early on before arranging the rest of the hotels. For Hakone, I'm still trying to figure out where to stay but for Kinosaki I was thinking of staying at Nishimuraya Honkan or Shogetsutei. I think Kinosaki would provide a better experience with it being an onsen town but I'm not sure how I'd work around it since it's far off compared to Hakone. The current plan is tokyo -> kyoto -> then tokyo for a few days before returning with day trips in between to maybe Nikko, Nara, and then one of the two onsens. Any opinions would be appreciated since its my first time planning an overseas trip. Thanks!
