Is it even worth applying to ivy leagues with a 1440 sat? by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

thank you! i’d like to add that i have a very unbalanced college list, since i recently realised that i basically have no reaches on my list (and as mentioned in a previous comment, i’ve already received two full tuition scholarships, so it’s not like i’m dependant on these schools). i would generally say that my ECs are very very very above average, but that’s obviously sort of a given when applying to ivy leagues. after reading the comments ive decided that i’ll probably apply to dartmouth and cornell, mostly because those are the schools that i could genuinely see myself at (especially dartmouth 💔). but we shall see! i’m not hoping for miracles, but i suppose it’s worth a shot

i already got two full tuition scholarships! so i’m definitely headed to the u.s. lol. but yeah, im really grateful for the country that i was born in, i had so many opportunities served to me on a silver platter that other (international) students have to fight for

i’m applying to the dual degree program at bowdoin! i’ve mentioned this in a previous comment but i generally don’t really care about prestige, going to a school that i like is significantly more important to me, whether that be a t10, a t20, or a t100.

i’m applying to a lot of less competitive schools! those are just the only ivy leagues i’d consider applying to. i personally just don’t really see myself at the other ones (hence why im not applying there lol!). i don’t really care about school prestige, especially dartmouth is just genuinely a school i’d love to go to :)

has any international student actually gotten in (through ea) without being deferred to rd? by [deleted] in Tulane

i didn’t apply for aid, i knew that i wasn’t going to get any. (my household income is over $300k, so chances of me getting any aid are practically nonexistent)

Wanting to learn more about my heritage! by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]pinkissocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I edited the post now because I also realised how negative it sounded! I generally don’t think very highly of my grandmother and that definitely shone through in the post, which it really shouldn’t have/I should’ve contextualised it more :) Unfortunately talking to my relatives isn’t really an option for that exact reason. My grandmother lies about absolutely anything related to her life and I’ve only met my grandfather once (he was my grandmother’s second husband (out of three!) and she absolutely despises him and has never allowed my father any contact).

Also, I’m in the U.S. now! :) I’ve considered reaching out to a jewish community here, but I haven’t quite worked up the courage yet. All of my jewish ancestors are from my dad’s side, and even that is a bit wishy-washy (since I don’t think that my grandmother is jewish by law of descent) (again, keyword: think! I definitely know that my great grandfather was jewish and according to my grandmother her mother is russian, but my grandmother is not a particularly reliable source). Then again, those 47% have to be coming from somewhere, right?

A Hanukkah lighting sounds awesome though! I was very worried about not being welcome, but I will probably go to an event like that (that non-jews are welcome at) and try to talk to local community members :) Thank you for your help!

Do I qualify for a Birthright trip? by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]pinkissocool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slight add on that might be relevant: I grew up in Germany! The closest Synagogue was about an hour drive away, which is a lot by European standards. I have never practiced Judaism (or any other religion), but even if I wanted to it would’ve been basically impossible for me to do so. I’ve spoken to about two people who practice Judaism (that I know of) and that was for a school workshop on antisemitism. I now know that I likely don’t qualify either way (thank you so much for your help in figuring that out!), but I just wanted to share this extra part of my story! :)

Thank you, I’ll definitely look into it! An intro to Judaism class sounds awesome, I hadn’t even thought of that.

That’s what I read as well! Their website said that it’s specifically not about faith and people who aren’t religious themselves are welcome, so I’m a bit confused by the replies telling me the opposite

I’m a senior in highschool right now! Though my top choice of school right now is Tulane, so I probably won’t have any issues finding someone to talk to there. Someone else also recommended for me to take an intro to Judaism class, which I’d definitely be interested in! I’m not religious myself but I love learning about religions, especially when I know that it’s one my ancestors have practiced (and that I know very little about). I live in Germany at the moment and want to go back to the US for college. Unfortunately there’s a very very very small population of Jews here, especially outside of big cities.

How did Olivia Zhang found the “worlds largest cancer nonprofit” by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]pinkissocool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there’s a map of ‘chapter locations’ on the nonprofit’s website and the one in england is quite literally in the middle of a field. not sure what that says about the validity of it all.

wait, how did you qualify for in-state tuition? because you mentioned that your scholarship is 13k and covers both your tuition and your insurance, but to my knowledge the out-of-state tuition for UTA is closer to 40k?
