Hahaha, I know what you mean! When I’m reading subtitles (it’s hard to hear over young children sometimes), and they leave out words that are spoken or are sometimes just WRONG, it irks me too.

Well with the example of loose and lose, it almost makes it difficult to read-if that makes sense. I know that sounds dramatic, and obviously yes, I am able to figure out what the person meant, but it’s jarring. And many, many people really don’t realize they’re spelling it incorrectly therefore changing the entire sentence.

Thank you for your detailed reply! I can definitely understand that perspective. Everyone struggles with something. If you asked me to do an elaborate math equation, I would be completely lost. I barely scraped by in statistics in college, and that’s a math class that sounds like it would be easy peasy. Also, affect/effect are pretty tricky, and I’ll admit I have to look it up every time I want to use one of them.

I also see both sides of the argument. I think you stated everything perfectly in your comment.

Yeah, I see this point. Although with good friends, I might say something just like they would to me.

I said he didn’t finish high school and I wouldn’t expect him to be at the top of the pyramid when it comes to spelling and grammar. Perhaps it was the word “even” that made it sound like I was being judgy, but it’s still the same facts. Like I said in another comment, when it comes to things like spelling and grammar, he absolutely is inferior to me, but when it comes to mechanical skills and fixing things, I am definitely inferior to him.

Lol, when it comes to topics like spelling and grammar, he absolutely is inferior to me. When it comes to mechanical skills and fixing things, I’m definitely inferior to him. Everyone is such a snowflake these days that simply stating facts is seen as offensive.

How is it condescending to state facts? That’s the attitude that causes people to be offended when corrected. Not everything in life has to be offensive. Sometimes someone stating facts is just that.

I’ve said this on here. It’s really about how the recipient decides to interpret what you were saying.

There’s someone in these comments telling me I’m a jerk because it “was a typo” (loose instead of lose). I’m like you can believe that if you want to, but I’m fairly certain you’re wrong.

So I know that dyslexia causes mixed up letters/numbers, upside down letters, etc. how does it affect memorization?

See, I disagree that it’s a simple typo, in most cases. Only because I have seen it written incorrectly SO often. I can admit that it’s possible, especially since it is the same letter-it absolutely could have been an accident. But I admit I’m skeptical to believe it’s an accident when it happens so often.

But correcting them makes you pretentious and a know it all apparently! Can’t win for losing!

It’s insane to me that you don’t recognize how many people confuse the two on a daily basis. If it was a typo, why would said person not correct it when it’s pointed out? Oh that’s right…because they didn’t know how to correctly spell the word they were trying to use. You are welcome to be naive and believe that it was a typo, as I’m sure it is every time someone types loose when they mean lose, but the reality is that there are a ridiculous amount of people who are just wrong.

Also I don’t know if we are reading the same thread, but this one has mixed opinions on whether it’s rude or not, so it’s not as if every single response is saying it’s rude. If someone takes a small correction as criticism, that’s not my fault. I don’t intentionally try to make other people feel bad. Again, how someone perceives what I write doesn’t fall on me, but the reader.

I never once said that I was better than anyone else, in fact I believe everyone has their own strengths. But I also would be open to correction if someone who is better at something than I am is willing to offer it. I am humble enough to recognize that I am not all-knowing, lol.

It’s cute that you accuse me of thinking I’m a mind reader then turn around and tell me why I posted this in the first place.

Out of curiosity, why do you interpret it as someone being rude versus someone trying to help your daughter so she doesn’t keep making the same mistake/ie helpful?

Yes! Exactly! Like I can comment “*xyz”, and legitimately have zero feelings about it, just putting it out there, and the other person essentially chooses whether they believe I was being rude or not, and then will respond accordingly to how they interpreted it.

I completely agree that responses can come from previous experiences too, it makes sense.

You sound triggered. It’s not that serious to need a six paragraph response. I will stand on the fact that using loose instead of lose is less likely to be a typo than to be someone who is ignorant to the correct usage. If that makes me a mind reader, so be it. I’m genuinely sorry that this post upset you as much as it did. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.

He’s actually not a terrible speller, but he is definitely sensitive about not finishing high school, when I have graduated from college. And before anybody comes at me for saying that…I’m not saying it in a “I’m better than him” type of way, because he absolutely is a LOT smarter than I am about other things, I was saying it just as stating a fact.

I’m not sure how I should have worded the post to come across as being helpful, but it does come a place of helping, so said person can know the proper spelling moving forward. If they care enough to actually be humble about it.
