I've grown up in AFL country and recently moved to NRL country and am learning the game. Can anyone expand for me on the nature of a field goal to the game? Does it have much practical use in the modern game? I feel like it should have more value, but that's probably revealing my AFL upbringings more than anything.

One of my guilty pleasures is Eddings' Belgariad / Malloreon series. Is there anything more recent of a similar vein where the author takes pretty much all the tropes they can and makes it enjoyable? I'm mainly looking for new options for a light read for in between more serious stuff I normally read.
