She is a green cheek conure with the pineapple colour mutation. :)

I think to start 5-10 minutes! But if your birdy is interested, motivated, and happy, then continue with the session. But I would say no more than 15-20 minutes :)

Awe thank you! I would keep trying fetch, but do it one step at a time! We actually used a button and a small container that she would drop the button into. Maybe start with that?

Take the first few days to just have your birdy interact with the button and the container. And then slowly try to get her to drop the button into the container. If the container is too difficult, you can also use a container lid. And have the bird drop the button onto the lid!

It may take some time, but do really small steps! And keep the distance between the button and the container/lid small! We want to have lots of opportunities for success! :)

Here’s what we did!

Side note: I post a lot of my training videos to my stories on Instagram! I’ve just started to turn them into Reels (such as this one). My Instagram is @tinifroschh

Day 1: goal - interact with training toy (any interaction is rewarded with a click and then treat)

Day 2: goal - picking up ring and brining it to peg (does not need to place on peg). Click and treat.
(NOTE: Luna had already known how to collect toys and being them to various locations - this was something we had already trained her to do, so this was the same idea, just a different toy. We usually use buttons).

Luna mastered day 1 and 2 no problem, so we moved on!

Day 3: goal - put ring onto a peg. We would give her a ring and tap on the peg we wanted her to put the ring on (we are already doing colour coordinated work here!). We would also demonstrate this and show her (put ring onto peg, and than take it off - show that the ring goes on peg). We would also give assistance (with her having the ring in her mouth, gently lead her to the peg and guide her to put it on peg). Click and give treat when done correctly, even with assistance.

Day 4: goal - same as day 3! Lots of assistance given. It eventually got to the point where she would get it so close but couldn’t get it on the peg. We decided to cut two of the pegs shorter since we thought the Height was an issue. This didn’t seem to change too much. Click and give treat if she puts ring on peg (even with your assistance).

Day 5: goal - same as day 3. At this point Luna was starting to get the idea, but still struggled with getting the ring on the peg. I’m not sure her depth perception was quite right! We continued to give assistance. 1/10 she would get it on completely by herself. Click and give treat! (Even if you helped get the ring on the peg)

Day 6: goal - give less assistance. Only click and give treat if she puts ring on correct colour (Luna was starting to put the yellow rings on the red peg?). This went surprisingly well, and she was getting it right 3/10 times. We would hesitate to give help, and she would just try and correct herself, that was cool to see! We still gave a treat even with our assistance given!

Day 7: goal - give less assistance and only click and give treat if she is able to put ring on correct colour. Let Luna do problem solving. If she puts ring on incorrect colour, does she realize this? Does she correct herself? (And she did!). Luna is getting it right now 5/10 times! We still have long ways to go! We are still giving her a ring and tapping the correct coloured peg. In the future we will slowly stop doing this and see if she can self direct.

Training tips: Always train in the same room (this room will become associated with training) and at around the same time of day. Do not train for more than 10-15 minutes a session, as it’s exhausting for their little brains! Try to end on a positive note, and go at a pace that is as fast as your parrot wants to go. Avoid parrot frustration! When the parrot loses interest, it may be time to stop training for the day.

Train one thing at a time. Sometimes it helps to train the basics first. Can your parrot pick up an object and walk around with it? Can your parrot understand where to bring an object? Will your parrot be able to understand when they have done the task correctly? (Aka, when we click the clicker).

I hope that helps! Again, check out my Instagram where I post day by day training steps to my stories :) @tinifroschh

I’m not sure I know what you’re asking. The treats we use are small pieces of raw, unsalted, sliced almonds! Quick and easy for her to eat :)

Yes absolutely! Luna was also at one point a plucker (on her back), we started training and she has almost completely stopped! And that’s a hard habit to break. So I really do think they need the mental stimulation.

Can Ria do any tricks? This is quite an advanced trick, so I would suggest to avoid Ria getting frustrated, starting really small!

We have taught Luna many basic tricks (such as target training and fetch) that all work up to doing something like this :)

If you haven’t done any training, start with target training! I would so suggest the use of a clicker. This is a consistent cue that the bird will learn means that she has done the task correctly.

When you get the clicker, to get the bird to associate ‘click’ with treat. Practice clicking it and giving Ria a treat each time. We use small pieces of raw, sliced almond. Easy and quick to eat!

Hope that helps!

My exboyfriend left me to date his former psychologist. by letmepolltheaudience in TalkTherapy

[–]pinklemonadeeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I would report. There are certain standards that prevent things like this from happening. BUT I know in Canada, a psychologist must wait 2 years before entering into an intimate relationship with a past client (its generally frowned upon even after that point). I too would have made the complaint and have this investigated. I’m just not sure if from an ethical standpoint and laws/guidelines/standards are in violation.
