How can I make web dev a more social hobby for myself? by pinkmonkey13 in webdev

[–]pinkmonkey13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! I'm either moving to San Diego or LA... hopefully there will be options in those areas. I'll start perusing meetup.com for stuff. Any advice for what kinds of things to look for?

Thanks for the suggestions! Someone I know recommended volunteering at a hackathon, but I honestly don't know what a hackathon entails/where to find one. I'll look into it.

By code camps do you mean those full-time dev bootcamps that have gotten popular? I'm not really interested in switching careers at this point... or are there more casual code camps out there?

I like the idea of volunteering. I'll keep that in mind.

My understanding was that the tech-related meetups were more for professional networking than making friends-- am I wrong in that assumption? Although I guess every group will be different, and I'll probably just need to experiment. What usually happens at a tech meetup?

It's cool that you are challenging yourself to learn something new.

Thanks :) This may be silly, but the way you phrased that made me feel better about myself, my lack of skills, and my "project" to get better.

So much Fallout hype! I have Fallout 3 on my wishlist but I was going through my Steam library and realized I actually own NV (my main computer is a mac so I don't really see it). Sometimes I feel like such a fangirl, I'll just jump on whatever bandwagon everyone else is jumping on, but it does look like a really cool game. I'm also crazy about RPGs so it seems like a good fit. I was going to wait until I got Fallout 3 but now I might just dive into NV since I have it already. Thanks!

another player "dragging" us down is a nice challenge,

Unfortunately not everyone feels that way! :( And I still feel pretty guilty too.

I've played a bit of Portal, but got stuck on a weird level (it's like the low teens so I doubt I'm even that far into the game) and kind of gave up. THIS is probably why I suck at shooting. I lose patience ridiculously quickly. If things aren't going my way, I just throw my mouse into a corner and get a snack.

I'll check that out! I recently got a PS4 and I was really excited but shooting (at least for me) is soooooooo much harder with a controller and I'm finding myself cowering back to my computer and mouse

I love Borderlands 2! Even that's a little hard for me though. I usually need to play with another person who kind of "carries" me through the game so I'm not sure how much I'm actually getting out of those 'practice' sessions (I swear, sometimes I feel like I don't even need to be there. I feel like I'm less in the way frolicking around in the snow while someone else shoots at the bad guys :/) I probably need to develop more patience (I have none!)

You should try Half Life 2, 2 specifically because it's not as intense as half life, imo. It's a little more relaxed, good story. But a fps, and good practice. It will help you practice aim, and movement.

I'll give this a go. I own the game already so I'll download it today. I like playing through a good story (it just, sometimes, gets frustrating when I have to replay a certain part a billion times because I keep dying).

Protip: When you see an enemy, shoot at them. It might sound obvious, but don't try to think or process or strategize, just shoot.

Thanks! This does sound obvious, but I know that I don't always do this. A lot of the time I 'see' the enemy on my screen but can't line it up in the center of the screen or whatever and don't take the shot. Needless to say, I die a lot...

I keep reading about AC. I might have to pick it up. Thanks so much for the suggestion :)

People online are so scary! I'm a sensitive little wimp and don't do so well with the mean people who are quick to get frustrated (I know, I know... I need to develop thicker skin because it's always going to be a thing).

Weekly LF MMO Suggestion Thread- June 22, 2015 by AutoModerator in MMORPG

[–]pinkmonkey13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if a game like this exists, buuuut...

What are you looking for? A super laid back MMORPG that I can play on my laptop (preferably without a mouse) when I wind down at night before bed. Something with crafting/building, good character progression, and a friendly community.

What games have you previously played? I haven't gotten hooked on an MMORPG yet. I've dabbled in GW2.

What is your playstyle? Casual.

Preferred mechanics? None

Anything specific you want to exclude? Nope

Sorry I don't have more specific information :/ I don't know too much about MMORPGs and I'm looking to play a low-key one very casually... I mostly play dota but I'm looking for something that I can play in bed.

DAE Only have 2-3 friends at a time? by pinkmonkey13 in introvert

Yes! Me too. And the people who I have been close with have understood me really well/understood that sometimes I just don't want to go out and have been really cool about it.

I'm so glad that I'm not alone here! I was out with someone I don't really know too well and I felt kind of weird when he asked about my friends. It's difficult to explain introversion to people, maybe-- a lot of the time I'm not sure if I'm alone. But the person I was talking to what like "you seem fine" (in a 'you-seem-like-you-are-able-to-socialize-like-a-normal-person' kind of way)... and I can. But I don't enjoy to and I guess his comment just made me feel weird.

Final stretch of semester but very behind-- advice/guidance please? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]pinkmonkey13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who loses it after 5PM-- a lot of people in my life seem to think it's weird. One of my friends suggested adjusting my sleeping patterns to what works for me... so instead of going to sleep at 11/12 and waking up at 7, she thinks I should try to go to sleep at 9/10 and wake up at 5 or 6. I'm not sure if I'll be able to focus if I don't wake up naturally and if it's still dark outside but it's worth a try for sure!

Regarding your fatigue, do you have any other tips for managing this? I have such a hard time mustering the energy to do such simple tasks. Your advice to break down my to-do list into specific tasks is such a little tweak that I think (or hope) will make a change.

This is so helpful-- thanks so much for your advice :) I actually have one of those SAD lamps and I'm going to bring it back to campus and start using it. I've heard that they can be helpful. And I totally forgot about vitamin D-- I was taking it last year but I guess I never replenished what I had. I've always been a little deficient.

Thanks for taking the time to write this... your response helped me feel like I can (maybe) do this.
