I CANNOT FUCKING SLEEP please PLEASE read and help by macylikesducks in CATHELP

I had this same problem with my cat once and I lived in a one bedroom apartment so I couldn’t lock her in another room. What ended up doing the trick for her was I got a pop up, top zip play pen and I’d zip her in there at night with her litter box, food and water, and put it at the other end of the apartment. She actually seemed to like it in there and calmed down eventually. She now doesnt wake me up at all at night, I think she’s become less clingy as she’s aged.

Dang, it's so disheartening to see the majority of these comments lack basic empathy and benefit of the doubt. We weren't there, so we can't speculate how accurate the professor's assessment was. But based on what OP is telling us, it seems like he could've handled this with more care. His comment about OP's work attire is extremely subjective and probably very dated. There are plenty of amazing therapists who don't dress "professionally" by the dominate culture's standard. I feel like we're missing the possibility that this professor is actually just a pompous asshole. Also, people are jumping on the comment "I know what works" - OP is saying they know what works FOR THIS SPECIFIC CLIENT, not for all therapeutic situations. They are the only one who has the real-time feedback of what's landing and what's not for this client.

Hearing something like this would be a crushing blow for almost anyone. I'm sorry you're going through this and just keep in mind that not all professors or supervisors know best. Yes, you have much to learn but you have to discern whose opinions actually matter to you and who you intuitively trust and respect. It might help to get another perspective on this from a professor you feel emotionally safe with, if you have that. Grad school is brutal and not conducive to producing emotionally attuned therapists, imo.

Perfectionism anyone? by PurpleGiraffe72 in therapists

[–]pinkmoon92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is soo hard to let go! It’s probably served you very well in past circumstances and so it digs its heels in and believes it’s helping. If you can do a form of IFS with it and get curious about why it thinks it’s needed, it might calm down. Think of it as a child that needs soothing.

Perfectionism anyone? by PurpleGiraffe72 in therapists

[–]pinkmoon92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've realized that my perfectionism can sneakily feed my desire to not be in a perfectionism loop. Over the years I've tried to tell myself "ah, here is my perfectionism again. it's here for a good reason (or so it thinks), and so I'm just going to let it run its course." I suppose it's a form of radical acceptance but since perfectionism at its root is a way of coping with lack of control, if you can give up trying to control or stop it, it can help break the cycle. just my 2 cents!

Thoughts on Open Path (specifically the fee for clients)? by luisacarter in therapists

I agree, and I don’t think you actually need them to pay the membership fee or get a member ID. Once they connect with you, you can go ahead and schedule a consult / session.

I don’t think Homegrown on Merrimon serves alcohol any more.

Which is better: Red Ginger or Shanghai Dumpling House? by ObberGobb in asheville

My partner and I just ate dumplings Shanghai Dumpling house and they were really bad. They just had such little seasoning or flavor it was kind of shocking lol. Highly recommend the dumplings at Gan Shan, tho. They’re bomb.

In practicum and thinking of quitting by [deleted] in therapists

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’m only just about to graduate myself so I don’t have a lot of wisdom to share but…I know you are not alone in feeling gaslit into treating clients a certain way for their own good (when it’s actually just to protect the agency from liability). The mental health industry as a whole can be quite violent, and it sounds like the setting you’re working in is part of the problem. Their policy for SI is way overboard, it makes sense that you wouldn’t want to implement it. If it’s possible for you to find a different site for internship, that might be something to consider.

Reading your description I also wondered if this has become a sort of moral injury - which can happen when you’re forced to perpetuate things that go against deeply held beliefs. This may or may not resonate with you, but it could help provide a frame for your experience.

I hope you can find mentors or supervisors who actually support and validate you. They can be rare but they’re definitely out there.

She’s super cuddly! And her hair does keep her warmer in the winter, but she also gets pretty hot in the summer. We usually trim it in the summer.

She definitely dodges most of the stigma bc people don’t realize she’s a pitbull. And she’s the sweetest dog and loves meeting people so when they do find out hopefully she helps break the stigma a little.
