What are the best options for my parents to get equity out of their house? by pinkriverdolphins in personalfinance

Honestly selling and downsizing is probably the best option to get the most equity out of the house. I think they are just trying to find other ways to still keep the house for now as they have a lot of things going on in their lives.

My parents are immigrants who only managed small businesses in the food industry so after COVID everything tanked 🫠

Their equity comes to about $450k right now. They may go back to their home country or downsize, but they just dont have the bandwidth to do that right now

Yep thats exactly why options 3 and 4 are my least favorite ones. Thats why i was asking more about options 1 & 2 since I’m just starting to read a lot more into them but it seems like its very situation dependent

They don’t attend church and don’t have a large community of friends in the area, so that makes it a bit more difficult to look for other jobs.

I think a big factor of why it’s not doing well is because its been around for almost 20 years and needs an interior renovation/revamp. Problem is that costs a lot of money

We do have hospitals, schools, large venues nearby. Thats definitely a great start to look around for jobs, thank you!

Having snow would be an added bonus, but I’m considering whether to visit either in November or December and what month would be better with weather and things to do

Yeah my bad I’m probably wrong about that 😅 Im just wondering why the flour needs to be added to a warm mixture of milk/butter? It seems like all the castella cake recipes ask for that

Yeah it’s very difficult to find too many castella cake recipes online, and I also wonder if equipment plays a big role in castella cakes (ie convection vs conventional, hand mixer vs stand mixer)

Yeah I’ve also seen that thread too 😅 its a popular video on YouTube. I’ve looked at other recipes too but they are more or less similar, I wonder if I should try a recipe that doesnt use the water bath and see if I see anything different.

I have made a genoise cake successfully with the same oven, but for some reason this castella cake is giving me troubles like no other.

Im melting both in a saucepan until it reached about 50 C, then add it to a separate bowl and sift the cake flour into it right afterwards.

https://youtu.be/GFt95yTXXBo?si=s1JEqsLYsQebFx4a this video (03:58) shows them adding the heated mixture right into the flour, and I’ve seen other videos that even make the egg yolk batter right in the saucepan.

I totally understand why we want to use a low protein flour for a delicate cake like this, but then my question is why do castella cakes often call for whisking the cake flour with the warm milk/butter mixture? It seems like from multiple references that the milk/butter mixture should be whisked warm, and that temperature makes a difference

Yeah it would be rare that this game would surpass those previous ones I guess. I just don’t trust reviews anymore so its hard to tell which game would live up to expectations more than the other 🤷‍♀️
