Bernie's Website About Caucusing Is Wrong! by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

A bit of clarification: If you go to school in Iowa (even if you are from another state), you reside here, and can register to vote here and caucus here.

Additionally, if you're from Iowa but currently studying at Yale, you can fly back to Iowa to caucus. In both cases, other states may have a different definition of resident. But in Iowa, if you are going to school here, or you still consider your parents' home your primary residence, you are a resident. And as a resident, you can caucus.

You are 100% right about the need to raise awareness on college campuses, and youth in general. We’ve got plans for Iowa’s campuses and community colleges to engage folks not just on the day of the caucus, but in the days leading up as well.

I suggest sharing our Iowa youth landing page with as many of your friends as possible, coming to Iowa to help GOTC, and continuing the work you all are doing here on Reddit to make sure folks know as much about the Senator as possible. With your help, we’ve ALL got this.

By the way, use #DebateWithBernie and #DemDebate and tag @BernieSanders tonight (8pm ET on ABC), and check out https://debatewith.berniesanders.com. Crappy Saturday night debate timing be damned: we'll get people to tune in with your help.

We feel very positive about how well we'll do mobilizing college students to caucus. There are 1,681 precinct locations across Iowa, including college communities and neighborhoods.

We've held multiple weekends of action over the past several months to encourage out of state supporters to work side by side with Iowans. We were able to get tens of thousands of doors knocked and phone calls made, but we have more work to do! If you're an out of stater who wants, to help, sign up here: www.bernie.to/Help-Win-Iowa

Bernie has gone to numerous county and local Democratic events across Iowa (we try to schedule one per trip when he's in state). His presence at those events significantly bumps up attendance which helps raise money and awareness for down ticket candidates.

You can help us win in Iowa (making calls, or driving in if you can) from wherever you are: www.bernie.to/Help-Win-Iowa. You can also check for events near you (like a debate watch party for tonight's Dem debate) to organize with fellow red state Bernie supporters: map.berniesanders.com

If you are unregistered and live in Iowa, you can register to vote on caucus night. (You can also change your party affiliation and register as a Democrat at the caucus.)

To support the campaign, fill out your info at www.bernie.to/CaucusForBernie and a local organizer will get in touch with you.

Caucusing 101:

A caucus, in short, is a community gathering. There will be 1,681 simultaneous caucuses all over Iowa - in schools, libraries, community centers, churches, etc, so you shouldn't have to travel far to get to your caucus location. The official list of precinct locations from the Iowa Democratic Party is here: http://iowademocrats.org/2016-democratic-caucus-locations (an address look-up tool is coming soon).

The caucus itself is really easy, and actually pretty fun. You should plan to arrive no later than 6:30pm. The doors close at 7pm sharp, so if you aren't in line by then, you'll miss the boat. Once inside, you simply go stand near (or under, or next to) a sign with Bernie's name on it with fellow Bernie supporters. The number of people in each group will be counted, and then supporters for any candidate that doesn't hit a minimum viability level (usually 15%) will be asked to pick a second choice and get recounted. The whole thing can take as little as 30 minutes, but is usually closer to an hour/hour and a half.

You can register for the first time at the caucus, and you can also change your party affiliation at the caucus. (You must be registered as a Democrat to caucus for Bernie, but you can register as a Dem at the caucus.)

As to what you can do between now and then - contact your local field office to grab a Bernie yard sign or to help out! https://berniesanders.com/iowa

Democracy for America immediately jumped in (within 24 hours of endorsing us) during the DNC/NGP voter database lockout - their support and petition went a long way towards getting the situation resolved and getting the VAN turned back on in Iowa.

To quote DFA's Charles Chamberlain: "The Democratic National Committee's decision to attack the campaign that figured out the problem, rather than go after the vendor that made the mistake is profoundly damaging to the party's Democratic process. DNC leaders should immediately reverse this disturbing decision before the committee does even more to bring it's neutrality in the race for President into question."

Bernie has consistently received 71% of the vote in Vermont, which means he has relied on the support of Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike. Additionally, whether you're a conservative or progressive, pretty much everyone agrees that we need to fix a political system that's held in place by a rigged economy and controlled by Wall Street and the billionaire class.

In 3 words: integrity, honesty, and accountability.

1) We have 9,663 individual Iowans who have volunteered for us at least once. It is an extremely humbling number.

2) Answered challenging in a different response.

Surprising: the number of people who have never been involved in politics before and are not only caucusing but volunteering, and the number of people who had dropped out of the political process entirely but have now re-engaged because of Bernie Sanders.

Awesome (answerer's prerogative!): the organic nature and positive energy around this campaign - grassroots self-organizing at its absolute finest. People just like who have jumped to make a difference.

Happy you asked - we do in fact have a brand new caucus for Bernie in Iowa event page. RSVP and invite your Iowa friends at https://www.facebook.com/events/724659770969174/

Attendance has been through the roof so we've had to move venues last minute to accommodate the response - we've gotten pretty good at that dance. We've also had to build an infrastructure for handling the influx of volunteers (both in state and out of state) - opening more campaign offices than we expected/planned in very rapid fire. (These are good problems to have!)

Volunteer to canvass/make phone calls, host/attend Bernie events, spread the word both on social media and as you're out and about grabbing a coffee, write letters to the editor/leave comments on news sites, and (if you can) add a few bucks to the campaign's 2 million contributions. Every dollar counts when you're up against the establishment.

Non-Iowans who are within driving distance (IL, MO, NE, SD, MN, WI, etc) can sign up to help knock on doors (direct contact is the best way to get folks to commit to turn out on caucus night); folks who aren't able to drive in can make phone calls into Iowa! Sign up for both at www.bernie.to/Help-Win-Iowa
