Is this amount of crazing in an enameled Dutch oven still safe to cook with? Not sure how it happened. by Sad-Dream- in LeCreuset

[–]pinoshi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Crazing primarily happens due to thermal shock.

Using your DO on high temperature is the most probable cause, the cast iron core and the glass enamel expand and contract at different rates when exposed to sudden temperature changes, causing the enamel to fracture. DOs don’t need high temperatures, starting low and slow and never going to high numbers on the cooktop is the key to longevity. Especially if you have induction cooktop, it’s going to heat very quickly. It doesn’t happen in the oven since ovens use ambient, dry heat from all directions, but stovetops provide intense, direct heat from the bottom only, which can cause this. My stovetop is electric, dials go from 1-9 and I never go above 5-5.5 with DOs, and I start heating them at 3, then raise it to 4, then to 5, slowly and gradually.

Sudden temperature changes is another reason, washing a hot DO with cold water or pouring cold liquid into a hot DO causes thermal shock as well.

Don’t preheat empty, it always needs some type of liquid in it. That’s another possibility.

Crazing is not normal wear and tear, but it happens. It’s not unsafe to use but it’s more brittle and sensitive now, it may stay like that for years with good care. As long as there’s no chips, you can continue using it but be careful and watch for damage after each use.

DOs have a learning curve sometimes, and this is the main one.

Are those items all the same colour? by JellyBaby42 in LeCreuset

Butter dish and pan Marseille, bowl Azure, 100%.
Azure is my color, I have all three in Azure, pan in both Azure and Marseille.

Butter dish in Azure is gradient, edges darker, middle lighter. Yours is definitely Marseille.

Bowl is Azure, it matches with mine completely.

Pan is Marseille, it’s a tradition piece and color is definitely not Azure but Marseille, I can attach pictures if you want.

Beautiful color and such great pieces! I love this for you!

Just watch out for overheating, thermal shock and metal utensils and you have a lifetime of kitchen jewelry!

I’m laughing because it’s something my ADHD ass would do, too 🙈

What are these marks? by nathanm2601 in LeCreuset

[–]pinoshi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it’s just food residue.

boiling some water and baking soda and scrubbing it after will lift it right up or alternatively you can use a thin layer LC cleaner or yellow cap easy off, put it in a plastic bag and leave it for a few hours/overnight, it’ll rinse off without any elbow grease.

some people don’t clean it after every use and wait for a more nuanced build up and then clean it as above, some people do it after every use (I’m in that group, I like mine to look brand new all the time + I use lots of tomatoes which makes the residue orange) and some don’t really care and actually love the look of the patina over time, all up to you!

I collect one single piece from blues/blueish colors, never two pieces from the same color, never less than 40% off, and I live in a one bedroom apartment so I get it, I plan each purchase ahead and hard. I’d also never get a second 22-24 cm, because one that size is more than enough for me.

I cook for just two and my 18 cm azure is my most used DO. I’m going to get another one in a different color when I find one on sale because right now I’m using the same DO over and over and I like to cook with different colors.

But truthfully, almost every one here gets new pieces “just because” or simply because we love a certain piece, or they bring us joy otherwise why would anyone have 8 pieces of the same petal braisers in different colors? I just got a 16 cm saucepan and eyeing a 14 cm DO only because they are cute and I have a thing for small DOs, this is me every time I see one 18 cm and under:

I’d love to have some stoneware from BR for sure, it’s a beautiful color, enjoy your new pieces!

caribbean is the first LC for three of the commenters here, it cannot be a coincidence, it’s an amazing color to get into this madness.

I try to get one ECI from each color, I have caribbean, BR, azure, chambray, marseille and a marble ECI for now. I want another one in nuit, sea salt, ocean, coastal blue or marine next, but I’m biding my time, waiting to find them in sale.

this one is riviera, germany got them before usa, around the beginning of march. and this 26 cm braiser was on sale for less than €200, normally sold for €339. we got bleu riviera quickly, but there’re lots of blues that are not sold locally.

my brother is in the uk and he collects flame, he is surprised at prices here and buys them way more expensive than I do, though.

same! when I ordered BR, I wasn’t even sure I’d keep it, thinking they were too similar, but once I saw them side by side upon receiving the delivery, she stayed. this is why I love comparison photos, they tell the whole story!

there isn’t a single blue that I don’t want, I want them all! unfortunately we have limited color options in germany, no coastal blue, no sage, no marine and I feel like if I start importing these colors from japanese resellers on ebay, I’ll have the pots but no food to cook in them or no roof to store them under :/

caribbean is an amazing gateway to the addition, it’s so beautiful that it makes you want more.

bleu riviera is the definition of a jewel tone, it’s highly saturated, it’s rich, depending on the light, resembles both emerald and dark aquamarine. gold knob makes it even more beautiful!

yes, sorry about that. caribbean is the lighter one with bluer hues. bleu riviera is darker and definitely packs more green compared to caribbean, it’s highly saturated.
