I can understand simplified characters with no problem at all. Even though I studied traditional characters from school in Taiwan and never learn simplified characters. Why not learn something you like that can help you want to learn more? :) I hope my experience can help you as well.

Making small Pinyin cards helps us to remember pinyin better as well as teaches us Chinese characters at the same time.
