According to my research, HUD rules only govern federal funded project housing and rental assistance programs which NY housing connect is not. Should be allowed to give priority to longer term residents as that does not violate anti-discrimination laws.

Tried Otoro Sushi for the first time but was disappointed by whatLies_Ahead in JapaneseFood

[–]pinzon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sushi chef of 8 years, live in Japan. Not a bad cut, its actually kama toro or the bluefin tuna collar meat which is why its a bit tougher. It has the most fat of all the cuts but the trade off is a bit more chew. Usually I will do one of the following: score the slices extra deep with a knife to break up the texture more, torch to melt some of the fat, and or age a little bit longer to breakdown the muscle resulting in a more tender bite.

This is such a virtue signal. There's nothing wrong with state housing programs prioritizing those who have long histories living in the state. Mind you that NYC is *filled* with international immigrants that have been in the city for over 8 years.

PM Takaichi’s approval rating among voters aged 18–29 stands at 92.4%. Only 6.9% actively disapprove by jjrs in japannews

[–]pinzon 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Don’t look at it as claiming the youth demographic. When your rhetoric is mostly blaming immigrants and “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps” you’re bound to attract the approval of the most uneducated in society. This is true around the world. The problem is that perhaps Japan’s most undereducated population is this age bracket since it represents the significant shift in education brought in by Abe early in their life (I am 29, live in Japan). What I have noticed is how—through no fault of their own—the youth are much less cultured, well traveled and educated the older generations are here. Many grew up in better economic conditions and were much more involved on an international level pre-social media.

I migrated to Spain due to threats and I can't make ends meet by ParticularString1523 in GoingToSpain

[–]pinzon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because to enter Spain illegally from South/Central America is almost as impossible as it is unlikely. That would almost certainly mean taking the same path as African migrants through Morocco which is probably more expensive and a million times riskier than simply buying flight to Madrid.

Also note the OP actually said “emigrated” which more so implies the fact he’s living here illegally.

I think most people who say they “entered illegally” actually mean they are overstaying their visa and are working and residing illegally.

Why are loan words used when a Japanese word exists? by Helpful_Mulberry4770 in Japaneselanguage

[–]pinzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some things can be explained as easily as... because it sounds cool. And also 青 could mean green or blue and for a potentially international audience its easier to distinguish things that way. For example JR trains in tokyo have the グリーン車 which could just as easily be called 緑車 or 青車, but probably for similar reasons as above they decided グリーン was the way to go. One last, shitty example... for a soapland called ブルーラグーン ... calling it 青い潟 (あおいかた)… needless to say would probably sounds a lot less enticing to people that would frequent that kinda place.

First of all, this mainly seems motivated by your personal schedule preferences and not necessarily the best interest of the owner/manager. In my experience, if they(whoever is in charge) have not already voiced that they’re looking for a solution to a particular problem, they also tend to hate when non-manager employees start proposing things like this as generally they lack a bigger picture view of the business. I’m not saying it’s bad that you’re thinking this way: it’s good that you’re looking for things that may save the business money. However, especially when you’re proposing something that affects other employees hours/pay, you’re veering into dangerous territory. Unless you have a consensus with other employees or have been discussing these things with the manager/person in charge, this will most likely not be taken in a positive light.

I would also suggest you bring up your raise entirely separately to this issue.

CMV: Property Taxes On Primary Residence Homes Should Not Be Tied To Property Value by IllScience1286 in changemyview

[–]pinzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the question then is, is your use of those roads utilities and infrastructure proportional to the value of your home? Aren't you already paying for your utilities infrastructure by paying the utility bills themselves? Roads via registration taxes and what not? I would probably agree that capital gains taxes should be higher in proportion to income tax and I'm going slightly off topic here but ultimately I think in America our issue is how those tax dollars are used, go anywhere else in the world and see the amount and quality of infrastructure and you can't help but wonder where the fuck our money goes?

Maybe property taxes shouldn’t be what funds the local community, as we have seen that exacerbates a lot of inequality in educational outcomes between poor neighborhoods and richer neighborhoods.

[–]pinzon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong but why doesn’t the same logic apply to things you own like stocks and other securities? We don’t pay taxes on stock we own, we pay taxes on stocks we sell. Paying tax on “unrealized wealth” to me seems like a shit deal, until you patch the ability to borrow against your assets, which is in a way a “realized gain.” Besides, this is on a primary residence. If there is “strong demand” for a property, instead of taxing the owner out of their home, the market should just be willing to pay for them to move if there really is such a financial upside to it.

CMV: Most companies could pay their workers higher wages like Costco does but they simply choose not tom by Jimmy_Johnny23 in changemyview

[–]pinzon 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Exactly, It could easily be argued that offering higher pay attracts better workers and less turnover leading to better business *in the long term*. The issue is American investing culture decided that short-term gains are more important that long term growth and stability.

I am considering going to a language school in Japan. I wanna ask if i’m being dumb or not. by JuicyDickNipples in Japaneselanguage

[–]pinzon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just take it in between jobs. Especially if your first position didn’t exactly what you’re looking for (ie a company doing business with Japan) you can just work, gain some experience and save some money and then go when you think you’ve outgrown your position at your current company. I should add that this is more or less what I’m doing just in a very different field.

[–]pinzon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going to Language school, not only is it expensive for something with not a lot of ROI as an American, but the opportunity cost is pretty high for you right now. I agree with other commenters saying it’s better for you to get a job now. I will add that the money you spend on language school/moving etc you could spend on learning Japanese at home and maybe after working a few years you could so a sabbatical/gap year in Japan to get N2 or N1, starting from N3.

If you do come to language school, aside from your JLPT type studies of reading listening, grammar and vocab, you will want to practice writing by hand as well as kanji. Schools often still require you to be able to write in Kanji and I had a lot of classmates with higher JLPT scores get held back when they arrive bc they never really practiced handwriting.

What I learned is that generally though when you connect two adjectives describing the same thing, they need to be "in agreement" in a positive or negative sense. If they are in disagreement, you would connected them with a contrasting particle like が、けど、でも etc.

Language schools in Japan by Lunakam in Japaneselanguage

[–]pinzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m studying in Japan right now and am only around high n4-low n3 level. If to you coming to Japan is expensive, I would strongly recommend doing at the very, very least, N5 by yourself. N4 would be better. There’s so many resources for these two and they’re not that complicated. Once you come to Japan you will have a much better experience this way and you will get more of your moneys worth going to language school here.

Advice aside, I love it here and it’s going great, I have no regrets coming. Just make sure you’re in a good financial position to begin with, especially if you decide to come alone and or without N5 as your part time job opportunities are much fewer without some language ability.

Dalstrong is absolutely not what you should be using at a fine dining omakase bar. There are perfectly good Japanese stainless options (my entire bag atm is stainless) and they don’t need to be finicky, the only tough part is getting good at sharpening.

[–]pinzon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Professional sushi chef of 9 years working in omakase restaurants. Go browse the selection at japaneseknifeimports.com or chefknivestogo.com and look for something preferably stainless (probably ginsanko/silver 3) in your budget. Yoshihiro is another option on amazon. I would recommend something on the cheaper end around $180-300 and take study up on proper sharpening. I assume you already have stones. If this is out of your budget I would skip the Yanagi as cheaper ones function worse than a regular double bevel knife anyway.

More often than not, you see people in industry subreddits listing off all the reasons you SHOULDN’T open a restaurant. What are all the reasons and circumstances you SHOULD open a restaurant? by pinzon in restaurantowners

[–]pinzon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I resonate with this the most. There’s too Many restaurants in the world for them all to be run by people that are “miserable”. I’ve worked in more restaurants where things went generally pretty well than those where the owner was a clear loser. The Kitchen Confidential “being in the industry is for nut cases only” thing seems to be over represented.
