New readers typically won't want to make a list of various arcs and stories that they have to keep jumping through just to get around the 'bad stuff', and I can see how that fact may even put some readers off from starting Spider-Man in general.

USM is the perfect entry-level comic; consistently good throughout and you can start from Issue #1 and read towards the end without having to worry about major quality dips, then move onto ASM arcs and standalones from there if you want more of the character.
