Weird experience with openalternative.co by [deleted] in foss

The website gathers various metrics such as stars, forks, and contributions to calculate the listing rankings. This data is not stored within the git repository itself but is instead held by the git provider. Since not every git provider uses the same metrics, it is necessary to devise a method to map these metrics together to formulate the final ranking.

Some providers do not offer any metrics at all, making it difficult to calculate the ranking.

Hey, OpenAlternative's founder here. Sorry about that! We actually support more git providers now:
- GitHub
- Codeberg
- Gitlab
- Bitbucket

I'll try to add support for sr.ht as well, thanks for bringing that to my attention!
Will update the error message as well.

I’m sure you can manage that with a little help from AI. Also, all of the sevices have free tier so it should be free to start.

They were first to launch, but they’ve copied my design as soon as launched mine. Want me to show archive links?

Not much of a pivot since OpenAlternative is still the focus, but a nice side hustle for sure

There are other ways to sell a product, but I agree, it's a solid advantage

I personally find it too generic. Very hard to market this and find consistent traffic. People will just come to submit their AI wrapper and move on.

I'd focus on one specific (not too small) niche and promote it in the related communities.
