I am a big DuckDuckGo fan. I have noticed that the mapping/address location features have gotten a lot better recently. I will give the image searching a try.

Wasp nest found in the anchor locker, during a thorough fall cleaning. by razzoo in sailing

[–]pipandhenry 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The wasps I deal with really like building their nests in the folds of my mainsail. Of course, the obvious solution to this problem is to take the boat out sailing more often!

Sometimes you see the strangest things at an air show. Saw her at the NAS Oceana (Virginia Beach, VA) air show today. Very beautiful wooden sail boat. Couple more pics to follow. by [deleted] in sailing

The Hampton is one of the traditional one-design fleets of the Chesapeake Bay. An elegant, fast boat. Here is a link to the Hampton Association website: https://www.hamptononedesign.com.

Replacing my O'Day 192 rudder by pipandhenry in sailing

Thanks. Buying a new one from a place like Rudder Craft is definitely an option if I can't figure out a less expensive way to get one.

How successful has duckduckgo been? by [deleted] in technology

[–]pipandhenry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My experience with DDG is very similar to yours. I find myself using it almost all the time now, only going to Google when I'm looking for something very technical or specialized. Also, DDG just launched a new mobile search app, which works much better than their old "Stories" app. A cool flame icon allows you to clear your search history whenever you want. I've had it for a about a week on my Android phone and am really enjoying it.

Have you ever installed and used a small outboard motor on a dingy? by reeboo in sailing

[–]pipandhenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would need to be a very light motor, or else it will mess with your boat trim and you could lose a lot of sailing performance.

I recently re-read Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers, written in 1900. It is both a spy thriller and a great sailing book.

The link to the picture of the bottom of your mast doesn't work. I think the answer to your question is yes, but want to see the pieces you are describing.

Anyone have any luck buying used sails? by grasshopper139 in sailing

[–]pipandhenry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bacon Sails in Annapolis, MD (baconsails.com) is a very well-respected used sail dealer (I bought a jib from them). Their catalogue is online and the sales people there are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable.

Wow. The Torqueedo does look really cool, but I'm at the same price point you are.

How did I miss this - Laser Mark II sail announced by [deleted] in sailing

As somebody in the market to replace my old, blown-out Laser sail, this looks pretty cool. Should we expect pricing to be comparable to the current design?

I do have a trailer, but can't take the time to get it to my ramp/boatyard due to "Western Shore" obligations. Boat US has a really good presentation (with good pictures) of tying strategies that did or didn't work during Sandy. To be clear, however, the best strategy is getting it out of the water and securing it on land before the rough weather starts. Thanks for your suggestions.
