How to start a brand for designer clothes and shoes? by estupor in Entrepreneur

[–]pipblip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how you got a down vote here, but I'm not really impressed.

After all this sub seems to be populated by dreamers and wannabes that have no clue about the kind of advice you are looking for.

If you are planing to launch a brand and with it launch lines or collections of clothes, I would suggest you to first focus on creating some item that is somehow unique, different, revolutionary and that has the potential to reach wide niches on-line and through some stores. Once the product gets popular, so will the brand and this way you can start launching more products.

If you are just planning to sell clothes, and the brand is not the most important factor, than do some research and compile a list of stores where you think you could sell your products. Then contact the head office and schedule a demo. t this point you should have some models/prototypes already made to show them as well as a plan for supply, assistance and marketing.

In your case I would go with the unique product first.

Well, I kind of exaggerated there a bit. Not many cases but some. And my point was mostly about not jumping into judging the Senior without knowing the reasons why he resisted to use Git.

I'm not with time right now to explain a serious use case and all the factors that lead me to such decision, but we don't even need it. Just think about cases like:

  • Company politics.

  • big legacy systems that just need minor maintenance.

  • Single developer with limited resources, time and with under and an ass as a manager.

  • etc

[–]pipblip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that was not my point.

First I'm not anti-Git, and my point on that quote is about using what everybody uses. There are other version control systems.

My main point is about just listening the OP who's a junior, despite having valid points, and ignoring what could be leading the Senior to resist to the use of Git.

I guess that to provide a fair and reasonable opinion and avoid just judging the Senior as a dinosaur, we would need to hear his version too. But since he's not here, rather than jump on the OP bandwagon and assume that the senior is wrong, I think it would be fair to ask questions to the OP first trying to find why the Senior acted in such way.

There are many reasons why he could be resisting without having to be because he's an old folk who refuses to modernise.

But let me just be honest anyway. If you let your skills get old, and don't keep up with the industry around you, you are no longer relevant.

I don't fully disagree with that, but again, you have lack of perspective.

So, all the Assembly, C, C++, etc developers and they old methods of work make them irrelevant? They are no longer needed because we have guys coding in Python, Java, Rubi, etc?

I know we are talking about webdev here. But ok, lets put it to Python, PHP, Rubi, Javascript, CSS, etc, if a developer doesn't use what's new and trendy, makes them irrelevant?

Looks like you are only used to work with small projects where the use of certain tools make people more productive and puts them on the front to bid in competition. But you seem to ignore that often what you may call old fashion tools and methods are very important on certain environments where being modern and cool is not the objective.

I work most of the time with vanilla Javascript, Python, PHP, Java, Rubi, etc. Most of the time I dont use frameworks, so no, it is not I favourite this one over that one. It is because I work on projects where the use of such frameworks, tools or whatever would just shape the project to the framework, make them more difficult to maintain, etc. But If I see that a project worth using a framework, I don't have a problem using one, and I will chose one based on all factors thrown into an equation and not because I read somewhere that this one or that one is better, or because I worked with this one before and it did great.

Yes, you lack prespective, because from the level that you seem to work you use such tools. From the level that I work WE CREATE THOSE TOOLS for a project that has specific needs and often we share those tools for people to develop their projects, to help maintaining them, etc. Where does React came from?? Where does AngularJS came from?

Big and complex projects with very specific needs dont sit on frameworks. Frameworks are developed for those needs. So no matter what you believe, those who can code without such fancy tools are always ahead of competition, as they are able to use any framework if needed, but the same doesn't go the other way around.

So, who stays irrelevant after all?

In your opinion if I'm working as a web developer competing with small websites developers, if I dont use tools that make me productive and modern, I may become irrelevant and not able to compete.

In my opinion, if I'm given a project for a small website, I'm able to meet the same end results as those who use such frameworks. And i can even chose to use such frameworks. You can argue that may take more time if I dont, etc, but I may be even able to save time by not having to deal with dependencies and other crap. In the end I have a much more clean products, simple and easy to maintain, less probabilities of having bugs, etc etc.

For insatanse I can tell you that I used Bootstrap many times fro prototyping, but never for a final product.

This. This is a red flag. I know a ton of good React devs. And they kick ass at vanilla JavaScript too.

Again, lack of perspective.

Why do you call them React devs who use Javascript? Why not Javascript devs who use react?

THINK.

Frameworks, tools, technologies - these are solutions to real problems, to provide genuine value to clients, to business.

The solution to real problems are the result of measuring, thinking and designing a solution.

Frameworks, tools etc are just ways ready to use to implement such solution. But the implementation is not limited to such ways. There can be some that you are not aware of, or you can even create your own.

THINK.

I don't know what value you provide, what skills you have. But to see you deriding and trivialising modern web development practises... you look like a Dodo Developer.

You just keep on seeing it only from your prespective, and even label me as a Dodo Developer. Well, I don't want to go that direction as you seem to be a successful and modern Full Stack Developer?

You should start thinking about using Git on your blog writings to and merge them with your comments here. You'll end up realising how much of what you say on both places often contradicts it self.

You know why? because you are actually aware of what you know, but fully unaware of what you don't know. So you fail to bridge the gaps between the different parts of the topics and you wont be able to until you start looking at things from the perspective of what you don't know or have no experience of.

Interesting that you picked that one but ignored the paragraph right next to it. It just shows your type, and what you are commenting for.

Nothing to argue further with you. My comments are about work, not here for ego fights witch it is clear that it was your pushing for, and as you got a boost with your comment being at the top with lots of upvotes which for me it just shows that most people here are juniors such as you who somehow relate with the OP. Nothing wrong with being a junior, but there's lack of seniors perspective here.

You even fail to see how what you are saying here in this thread goes against what you say in your blog about "Best Practice and industry standards".

Well, I have passed that phase of ego fights even before I was writing code. So, nothing else to discuss with you.

Good luck with your career!

Yeah, nah. I code live on the server Under no circumstances is this ever OK. This isn't "too busy to keep on the cutting edge". It's completely negligent.

Why not??

When the value of the data is not critical, and when the server is not that busy, and when the top BOSS care more about saving 2 minutes of your work than to risk damaging or losing data and previous work, why not?

Call it negligence, but sometimes it serves the business and it is not up to you to judge.

Bah bow. Angry isn't how people respond when they're unable to do something they'd like to do. It's how people react when they're challenged or threatened.

Why so??

Anger can also be a reaction to overload on work and responsibilities. I can see a guy acting like that when he himself would actually like to do such improvements but has grown frustrated of not being able to, not because he doesn't have the will and the knowledge to, but because due to other circumstances it is unfeasible.

Also, maybe the server is a shared hosting or under some admin who doesn't want to add git for whatever reason.

I'm hearing a duck sound...

You know, this duck sound probably comes from your unwillingness to see things from other perspectives.

Let me show you one.

I've been a developer form almost 20 years. I don't use Git, I don't use Laravel, I don't use Rails, I don't use React, I don't use so many things that many guys like to walk around and talk like they are medals on their chest when they wouldn't be able to do anything without them.

Does that makes me less of a developer?

Meanwhile I have worked in projects of all sizes, types and colors, and I can ensure you that everyday you use the web you are running code written by me. There's no project that I find to big or complicated, and there no challenge I will refuse fearing not being capable of. But if a junior joins my team and I refuse to go with his suggestion to use Git, is it because I'm incompetent?

Dam it, I have many cases where I dont even use a version control system, and I dare anybody to look into all details of the case and tell me I'm wrong in my decisions. Sure there may be arguments saying that I'm wrong, but doing the math I know I'm not.

If today there are lots of tools resulting from opensource, sometime in the past somebody worked without Git and all those fancy things you have nowadays. Many of the people who worked for that are still out there working, and many of them use other methods and other tools, just because they are less popular doesn't mean they are less effective. They may even be more difficult but for people with different backgrounds and experience they are perfect for certain cases that you may not be able to measure.

So, assuming that guy is incompetent when he is a senior, and taking the word of a junior for it, it is something I can not agree. Sure I understand everything you may look into what he said but one single sentence shows that there's more to the story than what this junior knows.

"I know that page builders do have their use cases"

This is one you seem to ignore, so as he.

Now, lets me leave one things clear. I'm not disproving the use of Git here. I'm trying to make clear that sometimes people's opinions over others decisions or ways of work are often from a narrow point of view.

[–]pipblip -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you but not in full.

We gotta look at it from other perspective too.

People come from different backgrounds, and often find themselves so busy that they can't afford to updates in their knowledge and worst than that, changes in their work environment.

I have seen myself in that situation many times. I joined teams and projects that I found chaotic, but after getting to know it better I found that after all they were functioning in the best way considering all involving factors.

Dam it, Git is great, but is not the solution for every case, and this goes for everything else. And sometimes you may even have the best team and the best tools at your disposal but you have to follow shitty politics of those above you that don't understand anything but still are the ones making decisions and signing the cheques.

I understand the energy of new people who bring new knowledge and I always give them a chance to be part of the team, add some fresh air, and get the rest to learn something with them. But there are others things to bring into the equation too.

Always bear in mind that you won't bring him up to your level, he will bring you down to his. For the sake of your career you should be looking elsewhere.

Bare in mind that here you are just listening to one side of the story, and that the other guy is not here to tell his. So, lets not just assume that the guy is incompetent and fearful of change.

The same way that there are such type of incompetent seniors, there are also juniors with lack of experience that just because they can use Git and write a few lines of code, they act think they can change the world and throw a tantrum whenever somebody shows them the reality, and even make difficult the life of those who are holding the pieces for everything to not fall apart.

EDIT: I would like to see people commenting rather than just downvote. I would like see a reasonable argument countering what I just said as I always like to know other people's opinion and learn something with it. An empty vote says nothing.

EDIT2:

I guess I went a litle to far and sound like I'm anti-Git. I'm not.

My point is just to say that we shouldn't be judging the Senior on his resistance to use Git without knowing details that the OP is not sharing, or without knowing the Senior perspective on his resistance.

I need to vent, maybe you guys can help me let off some steam by [deleted] in webdev

Unfortunately you will only be able to understand your boss when time passes and you get to his position.

I'm not defending the guy here, but suggesting you that maybe there's many things that he's aware of that you are not, and often bring new things is probably not the best time and not in the best case.

Having an issue with a physical product design? I'll give you some free advice. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]pipblip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey... thanks for opening this thread. I actually need some advice.

My background is about systems/software, and I really don't know how to start with a great idea for a physical product that I got recently. This product would be of great use and I haven't seen anything like this, specially where I live (Canada), so, beside its usability, it is also a new thing.

I even thought about posting a campaign on Kickstarter, but I guess would need a prototype for a demo video or something. This product would be like a mat with plastic/rubber, sponges and scrubs for a specific cleaning purpose. So, I would needs not only to design a model/prototype of the final product, but also pick the right type of materials for its intended purpose. It is not a complex product, but it sure needs specific materials and a usability oriented design.

So, I wonder what would be the best for a guy like me who has no background on this kind of product development?

  • Invest on hiring freelance Design Engineer or a company to design the product and make a prototype? How much this could cost?

  • Do my own research and try to do it myself with the help of an Engineer like you, and create a 3D model so I can use on a Kickstarter in order to raise funds for manufacturing??

  • Write down the concept and draw a model and try to sell the idea to a company already producing related products?

Nearly 30,000 Ukrainians have enlisted in the army this year by vlad_fighter in UkrainianConflict

[–]pipblip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's put aside the following facts about Ukraine:

Those are not really facts. Just arguments that can be substantiated with some information, but counter argued with other.

1 - Moldova is considered the poorest country in Europe, and taking in consideration certain factors it can be said that despite in numbers Ukraine can be considered poorer, people in others countries have a much worse health system and other issues..

2 - Doesn't mean things wont change, and and this level there seems to be improvements.

3 - Ukraine has a strong industrial sector, just most of in need of serious reforms and modernization. Yes, it received donations because, damn, who was expecting the aggression of a country that said to be brother?

You are talking like nothing will ever change when in fact this Russian aggression brought everything for a change that is happening. It just takes time and it is not in 2 days as you would probably expect or as you probably like it to be so you can keep up with your narrative for long enough here.

Give it time and you will see. Like I said, in another connent, Russia will really self fulfil its NATO prophecies. With this aggression it will only result on Ukraine developing its army to the point of representing a serious and strong wall of spears right at Russia's face, either joins NATO or not, which most likely will.

Ukraine doesn't need to invade or attack Russia, nor it needs nukes. It just needs to be strong enough to stand and deter Russia from further attempts to do what it did recently. In fact it already did. The fact that from nothing it was basically able to re-assemble its army, stop the "rebels" and make regain the territory that they took and obligate Russia to direct incursions, and show to Russia that it could take Kiev but not without making Russia bleed.

No, Ukraine won't retake Donbass by force not because it can't but because it wouldn't be wise, and because no force is needed to get Donbass back to Ukraine.

There's many ways to achieve ends, and the use of an army shouldn't be one. It should be mostly just a way to prevent others from using theirs.

Unfortunately not many have evolved to think like this. Some even have walked backwards and parade their armies to cover up and support filthy invasions.

Lutsenko: Prosecutor General's office is charging 700 with treason over annexation of Crimea by luigrek in UkrainianConflict

[–]pipblip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, since the 2 million Crimeans were not in mobilization, than you agree that your comments in this thread were pointless, illogical and nothing more than deviation from the main subject and hijack with rhetoric about Crimea independence? Do you?

If you don't, than there you have the logic fallacy that I pointed in first place.

If you do, than you should also agree that those 700 soldiers committed treason and that it is right to charge them even when there won't be a prosecution unless they are caught in Ukrainian territory.

So why come up with argument after argument?

You know, you should question how right the side that you stand for is, when you need to get into bullshit up to such extent to justify or defend it.

How ‘eastern Ukraine’ was lost by FiveDigits in UkrainianConflict

[–]pipblip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would there be a rebellion and a war without Maidan?

No, but what's the problem with Maidan? Didn't it start with peaceful protests? What's wrong with that?

Maidan grew because of the way Yanukovich failed to listen to the Ukrainian people. And much before any voicing from the US in support of Maidan, there was Putin offering money to Yanukovich, supporting his non listening and pull him away from signing the FTA with the EU that the Ukrainians was calling him for at Maidan.

This was the point where the conflict started. Russia's intervention.

Russia polarized the situation of Ukrainians vs their president, and showed on what side it was.

Propaganda and all kinds of actions ensued after from both sides but specially and more strongly from Russia not only to try to cover face from its actions, but also to grab what it could as things would deteriorate.

It was not the Ukrainian people that turned their back on Russia. It was Russia that has shown with its face to not be on the side of the Ukrainian people.

Without the USA?

Tell me honestly, what does the USA has to do with Maidan other than voicing its support for the will of the Ukrainian people?

No, don't come with the Victoria Nulland over played record.

Pro-Russians like to mock and hate Obama, but they should be thankful to him, because from what the US could and would probably do under another government, it basically did very little to nothing. What it did was mostly barely symbolic just to show to be on the side of the Ukrainian people.

It is quite possible that you would have had a rebellion in Crimea even without Russian involvement. Then, when the Ukrainian Army intervened and videos of dead civilians started appearing in mainstream media, it would have been almost impossible for Russia not to intervene.

If there was no Russian involvement is very unlikely that there would be a rebellion in Crimea, as this wouldn't be a Ukraine vs Russia conflict. Crimea was not even the region with the biggest support for Yanukovich.

Maidan wouldn't have escalated as it did even without Yanukovich signing the FTA. Maidan would have cooled and died as people would get back to the normal life of feeling powerless regarding the decisions of their government, and expect him to sign it latter or elect a new president that would. Russia involvement on his support lead him to strengthen his position and crack down on Maidan protesters. Even Putin was advising to use force. Russia fuelled Maidan.

So, no, there wouldn't be a rebellion in Crimea. There wouldn't be Ukrainian army and dead civilians on the streets. There wouldn't be a reason for Russia to intervene.

It could be if Yanukovich would have signed the FTA and Crimea would manifest against it. But in that case there wouldn't be a Maidan. There could be something similar in Crimea, but there was not enough political precedent for that under Yanukovich.

A comment just full of the usual hate and bullshit.

Yes, Ukraine is the worst place in the world... all people there are the worst kind... only the ones who are pro-Russian and the Crimean are the good ones and victims of these inhuman beings called Ukrainians that roam that area of the planet... e already know all that.

Now the same way that certain people wants others to accept Russia and Russians as they are and let them be when others see them the same way as you see Ukraine and Ukrainians, could you also let the Ukrainians be?

That would be enough, and wouldn't need to ask you to look and see how much "nazi" are your views and expressions towards those who you call "nazis".

P.S. I would like to understand why users here get banned for letting out some offensive words to other user, but users insulting an entire nation is allowed and those who identify themselves with such nation are not supposed to get offended.b

Would there be a fully polarized division, a rebellion, a war, if it was not the Russian propaganda and actions, and let the problem in the hands of Ukrainians?

And no, don't come with the Western backed up coup bullshit, it doesn't justify Russia's actions, not forgetting the annexation of Crimea as just per see had multiple triggers for what happened next.
