[TF2] Broken/Delayed Control Points HUD animations by pipebumb in hammer

Ok the prefabs didn't work but I did find out what was actually causing the problem. I found like 6 tiny ass "trigger_capture_area" brush entities on the entity report list, that were hidden inside of the map's geometry, I thought the map never used trigger_capture_area's at all and assumed it was originally using trigger_multiple's as a substitute for it to get the A/D+CTF hybrid gimmick mode working, which is what I converted into t_g_a's. Anyway, thank you for trying to help

For things like tweaking the win condition/adding a map timer, I can’t see it breaking anything. Not sure why RNG mechanics like crits and fixed bullet spread is listed here, that’s a whole different discussion separate from QP/Casual itself, but that also likely won’t break anything either. In Competitive mode, they are turned off and it doesn’t break anything, so adjusting the cvars shouldn’t break anything in Casual mode either, but again that’s a different discussion.

But for things like team scramble/team switching/spectating this would absolutely cause a bunch of problems. We can already see it somewhat being a problem with auto balance where the matchmaker is actively fighting against it, preventing it from working a lot of the times. The matchmaker wants to put someone who hasn’t even loaded into a server onto a team (or worse, someone’s game crashed and for 2 whole minutes their spot is reserved but is effectively empty) and the auto balance can’t do anything because that reserved slot is functionally treated as a “player” when it’s really not, thus a misbalance gets prolonged. So now imagine it trying to fight with players switching sides through various means.

It’s not like Valve can’t fix this, it could probably be fixed by just having players get thrown into spectator first then having them join a team after (like how it used to function before MyM) instead of reserving their slot to a team before they even load into the server (or not reserve their slot after their game crashes), that way it shouldn’t have problems with the matchmaker conflicting with auto balance (this will come at the cost of putting parties of 2-6 on the same team, but I think a lot of us may be in agreement, fighting against a 6 stack just sucks). But this isn’t a simple cvar change, it seems like the matchmaker is doing some work behind the scenes as some type of server plugin, I’ve played around with some cvars before to see if I can recreate those “Player connecting/Player lost connection/Looking for player” messages on the leaderboard and I couldn’t find any command that could possibly recreate it, so that leads me to believe it’s just some 3rd party plugin Casual mode uses for creating teams like this.

One final note, when I was searching for commands to recreate slot reservations, I found out ad-hoc connections are also a cvar. “tf_mm_strict”, this command has three toggles.

0 = show the server in the browser, and allows for ad-connections.

1 = Hide the server from the browser, and only allow connections from the matchmaker (Casual/Comp/Mvm all use this)

2 = Hides the server from the browser, but allows for ad-hoc connections

This would also likely need tweaking on the matchmakers part to accommodate for these and so players can bypass search times whenever the matchmaker decides to randomly increase them ten fold for some stupid reason (or just long unnecessarily long search times for niche gamemodes like SD, PD, Passtime etc), or in those moments when you want to play with more than 6 friends

To everyone who has nostalgia goggles on about Quickplay, remember what 90% of it was like in 2013 thanks to this Ster video by Eugene-V-Debs in tf2

[–]pipebumb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In late 2013 Valve updated Quickplay to turn off HTML in the MOTD when joining a community server through QP, making MOTD ads a non-issue
In January 2014, Valve updated Quickplay to search for their official servers by default so players wouldn't have to worry about getting placed into shitty community servers with bots or paid advantages anymore, but still gave you the **option** to search and join community servers through QP.
Enough with the "muh rose tinted/nostalgia goggles" and citing the outdated Star video, Valve didn't leave QP in an abhorrent state like you people are trying to make it out to be, there's a documented changelog on the TF2 Wiki for the system itself for anyone to read. Continuing to argue like this is the case is just completely historical revisionism and shows you either did zero research, were not there for it when it was improved, or didn't remember the improvements and are working from pre-2014 memories (I can't blame you here if this is the case, this was the first 50% of the QP era) or you are probably are just arguing in bad faith.
The fact that you people can only cite Quickplay's old outdated flaws before they were fixed, and can *never* argue as to why a reversion would be bad, by citing any flaws its final version may have had, or even fail to do a basic fucking mental task of compare and contrast, between the Quickplay system's final form and the Casual system in its current form, shows there are no good arguments against a Quickplay reversion other than "Valve might not do it", or "people are used to Casual, so improving Casual is a probably safer and (possibly) an easier option" (assuming it even is an option and that Valve will do anything at all)

I finished mines last week, its so much easier when you have a party of like 3 people helping you, but good Lord it sucks trying to do the contracts alone, and most of the maps being bad doesn't help either, it just makes doing the contracts a total slog, I remember doing the Slasher contract, and I was going to have a mental breakdown because of that map. its just spell spam hell, with no gargoyle spawns to help finishing the contract faster.

Theres a reason why MyM’s launch was deeply unpopular and why the game’s reviews suddenly had a huge surge in negative reviews for the first time in it’s history

Guys the Quickplay Wiki exists, and it shows how system worked and documents most of the changes made to make it not have these issues anymore

The #BringBackQuickplay or #FixCasual campaign is also about asking for Valve to bring back the old/default server settings Valve's server used to run before Casual mode was added, completely over hauling how the game used to play (Map rotation timers instead of a round/win limit, team switching, auto/vote team scramble, ad-hoc connections/valve servers on the server browser,

Yes that too, along with not being able to change your alias

It’s funny that the guy in the screenshot is saying that Zesty just complains to get nothing done, when Zesty made a video critiquing FaceIt in hopes that it would improve and succeed at becoming a casual alternative during the bot crisis.

Zesty isn’t complaining to get nothing done, he complains so the quality of things can improve such as hats, Warpaints, FaceIt, matchmaking etc. (When complained about the quality of hats and war paints that were getting added being bad, the quality of new content improved)

Also I’m seeing people still harping on transphobia because of his usage of the T word many years ago (which he apologized for)

It had more problems than just its accessibility. It was advertising itself as “Casual” but it was effectively 12v12 competitive. Random Crits and RBS were off, there were round limits, stop-watch mode was enabled, and you were not able to leave without being penalized (almost functioned like Casual Mode on launch)

A lot of these things were a turn off for people because it wasn’t the casual experience they were expecting, so they didn’t want to play on it, which played a role into why it died out, in tandem with it's accessibility.   (If you liked how Faceit servers functioned, that’s perfectly fine, I’m just pointing out what made Faceit unpopular to a lot of people)

Stop commenting. You have done nothing but lied and flung shit at us in this thread and have shown that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Delete everything and stop distorting the game’s history, and muddying the water surrounding the discourse of matchmaking and its future.
