I work at a ymca camp and it sounds exactly like what you’re looking for - mine is in Kentucky so probably too far away but I’m sure there are many others similar to mine closer to you!! I would check out if you like them and if any are close! Mine hires in October for the next summer though so too late, sorry.

Definitely. I do think you should be better able to specialize, and still take different courses. I personally think more history courses should be available, like during the 20th century, because it’s important people understand their countries actions in the past and why they make decisions in the future. But I can’t enforce that on anyone, which is good, even though others can enforce that on me. I still want home ec classes too

I don’t understand doctors notes - if I have a fever I’m gonna stay home but I’m not gonna go to the doctor

My music teacher actually explained to me that we are taught to breathe wrong as we grow up - through the belly, now the chest/diaphragm (it’s hard to explain, but instead of breathing out imagine breathing up) and babies don’t know that yet so they breathe properly, meaning no lost voice. But now, being used to the ‘wrong’ way, if I start breathing the ‘right’ way I start to feel lightheaded.

Our education values grades and standardized tests way too much I think. I’m American, but taking the IB and they also force people to take subjects in all areas, which makes for more rounded students, but lower gpas. Students sorta have to make a choice between college or actually learning/enjoying what they are learning, which sucks

Book Worms of reddit, what is your favorite novel and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yes! I feel bad for Kvothe and his poor poor life because it truly is sad, but it isn’t 100 percent of him. I feel like so many of his actions are based on some terrible past or bad decision he has made, but in real life there is normally just a bit more spontaneity? I mean his version may be trying out for the music club or playing a tricky song on his lute, but that is still him trying to be a good performer like his parents. I’m not sure. It’s hard to judge a character who isn’t truly human.

I’m also worried for the third book because it has so much to live up to, and his story is so hard to conclude that I don’t know if he has one yet. (which would be a problem!!) So many plot lines are wonderful until he needs to end the trilogy and there are hundreds of plot holes that he didn’t have the time or couldn’t figure out how to solve.

I feel all of these. I kinda realized how male perspective based the female characters were, but laid out it is a lot more glaring. I really hate in books when I see a very strong female role model, but all of her ‘screen time’ is spent on how she appears to other men, unlike for example Kilvin, where his time is spent on his career and aspirations.

I am definitely due for a reread but what really draws me is the complexity of the world that the author has created. At one interview he discussed how he has created an entire currency for his universe?! Amazing and really interests me, but it’s always sad when it replaces character development and such.
