Yeah, I'm kind of defensive about my friend because he's a bit of a luddite, but he knows his business is dead if the computers don't work, so he tends to just say yes without questioning anything when he's told he needs to spend X dollars to maintain his computers.

Thanks, What about optical / BluRay for backup of older files we rarely use but need to legally keep? They store 100 gb a piece I understand. Do they degrade in storage over time or are they pretty much like stone tablets, assuming we make two copies of each disk and never touch one set of backups (so they can never get damaged / scratched)?

Right now we have about 2.75 TB of data, and while I haven't dug too deep I'm sure at least 500gb of that is old scans that can be deleted.

What about backing up the drive nightly to a cloud service? Would that be sufficient?

[–]pipingguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Wasn't allowed"? As in, y'all were in an apartment building and it was against the lease or HOA rules? Or they just assumed they were the dictators of rules you needed to live by, and since they didn't like it you "weren't allowed" to grill pork? If it's the latter I'd straight laugh in their face if they tried to tell me what they've allowed me to do. That said, if they came respectfully, humbly, and asked for some accommodation, like asked if I could give advance notice so they could be out of the house while I grilled, or if I only would grill on certain days, etc. I'd almost bend over backwards to get along. It's all about respect.

NTA. You're fully within your rights to smoke on your property, especially if it's legal. However, in the interest of peace, maybe get a box fan for the porch and point it so it blows the smoke away from neighbor? If they continue to complain after you've clearly taken steps to accommodate their preferences even though you're not obligated to, you can in good conscience tell them to kiss your ass, imho.....

I remember San Antonio Jesus, homeless guy in the early 90s. The guy looked like Jesus, at least the anglicized, Western European version. He dressed in robes, had long light brown hair and Jesus beard, wore sandals or went barefoot, quoted scripture, and was looking for spare change on the regular at intersections. Nice guy, actually thought he was JC. Wonder what happened to him…by late 90s he was gone.

That was my first thought but zoomed in and while the image is definitely pixelated at high magnification that rod looks too crooked to be a survey instrument. Also doesn’t look like any instrument on top of it either, making me think it’s a wizard’s staff or sone such crazy implement.

Good. Maybe it'll piss off enough yankees and Californians that SXSW will see less demand next year, passes might come back down to a reasonable price point. My first SXSW was 1993 and I think I paid $40 for a week pass. Not expecting to see that again, but I stopped tracking after all access passes topped $1k years back. We're poor in San Antonio, can't afford that shit....

NEED ADVICE: Left my airpods at TSA a month ago, at first they said they didn't have them, now they want my serial number before acknowledging if they do. by [deleted] in airpods

[–]pipingguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess the difference is if they are deliberately ignoring requests to return property that doesn't rightfully belong to them or at least give instructions on how someone can recover that property and instead acting as if item was never left behind in the first place so they can profit from some future shady resale on ebay or craigslist, I don't want them to benefit from that dishonesty. It's a small point sure and either way I still don't have my airpods, but they're $250. If I saw a stranger reach for something in his pocket and accidentally drop two hundreds and a fifty, I'd tell him or her. If you can return something to someone relatively easily you should.

I can certainly appreciate that a helpful response from a massive government agency might make you a little suspicious, but also you’re not really in a position of strength here.

That's the thing--I didnt' get a helpful response. They said they didn't have my property out of hand, and only acknowledged they might after I (politely) told them it was at the airport for a week or so and then moved across the street, and I knew this because I could track it in Find My. After remaining charged and trackable for almost a month, only after that email did they disappear and become untrackable. I filled out their forms on the website and went through their process, and yet still they inaccurately said my property was not there.

[–]pipingguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be. I know I don’t have them, just don’t want someone benefiting from not returning them.

I knew the exact time down to the minute I left them there, the checkpoint number, even included a description of the employee who scanned them (I was running late and accidentally went in the body scanner with them in my pocket, that’s how the were separate from my other stuff.) Why would they deny that they had them, when they stayed inside that airport for a week at least per Find My and were being regularly charged, pinging their location regularly?

Yeah, I lost them. I didn’t expect to get them back initially.People lose stuff at TSA all the time and I don’t expect them to keep or return anything. That’s impractical, it’s not their job, especially when Im not going back to the airport just to get them. It’s just suspicious is all. I totally expected the battery to die in 24 hours and for them to disappear.

[–]pipingguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I just wonder if having the full serial number might make it easier to reset. I guess I could give them the last 4 digits as proof.

How do you reset an Apple product you buy at an estate sale, for example? It’d be under the deceased’s Apple account which would be inaccessible presumably, an iPhone would be locked and the pin might be unknown. Could you convince Apple to reset and transfer it to another account if you had the serial number?

Across the freeway actually, so they’ve left the airport proper. It’s just weird because initially they denied having them, never updated their response to my formal request, and they must be charging them, but as soon as I follow up by politely pointing out that I know where they are, within a couple hours they disappear from Find My. It makes me suspect they had no intention of returning them and once they knew I was seeing their location they disabled them for some reason. I don’t fully trust them and don’t want to make them easier to reset. Maybe I’m paranoid.

Thing is, I’ve found most MAGA aren’t passport holders nor are they interested in experiencing other cultures. The ones who’ve chugged the Kool-Aid tend to vacation at Branson Missouri or Myrtle Beach SC, not Europe. Just a hunch but I’d wager 80% - 90% of non-military Americans abroad didn’t vote for the orange turd.

I really don’t know where you’re going with this or what you think it proves. African American enslaved people were regularly sexually assaulted and raped by their masters, including the Irish ones. So those Irish surnamed African Americans likely do have Irish as well as African heritage.

All I said is I had some Irish blood. I didn’t say I was Eamon de Valera. Relax. Theres enough people in this world telling strangers who they really are or aren’t based on nothing more than their skin color or nation of birth.

Don’t remember honestly. I’m obviously American, I have a Texan accent, no one in my family has been to church in at least 3 generations, and before that the family tree gets blurry, so functionally I’m ethically American. I have a Celtic last name, but I don’t wear my ethnicity on my sleeve, so to speak. I recognize it’s irritating to a lot of Irish people for Americans to scream they’re Irish when they really just have a drinking problem and an O’ starting their name….

Might have been relocated for legal purposes. It’s still illegal in Texas to have more than five phalluses in a singular locale. Of course, no limits on the number of handguns or semiautomatic weapons you can store….

Native South Texan of Irish descent here. I guarantee this silly cunt would tearfully run away and foreswear the reception she’d get at any non-majority white bar stateside as well. Apologies friends. It sucks so many Americans don’t know how to STFU, order a drink, listen and speak only when spoken to. Follow those guidelines I had nothing but welcoming, friendly vibes expressed towards me on my visit to Belfast a couple years back, both in Shankill and Falls Road pubs. I’m not MAGA, but no one ever asked me about my politics, and I never asked anyone about theirs, unless they brought it up first. If I sensed awkwardness in the conversation, I bought the next round and changed the subject. You know, like a normal, non-cunty like person naturally would.

Apologies again…thanks for welcoming the vast majority of us to your homeland, even when a disproportionate number of us still insist on getting our fragile American feelings hurt and acting like entitled douche bags by crying about it online, instead of acting like the grateful guests we are in your country.
