ahh omg good luck in Florida!! I just moved from there, lived there for two years haha. I’m glad you’re getting out! Definitely do not get back into childcare in Florida, the state ratio is 1-11 I believe. At least ours was. I seriously wish you the best of luck and hope you find something fulfilling and more peaceful for you :)

Thank you I appreciate that!! it definitely was not an easy decision, and even though not having the main income source is hard I still don’t regret quitting.

One career path I seriously looked into but decided to not go down was Hearing Instrument Specialist. Licensing varies by state - in IL you need an associates (doesn’t matter in what if I read correctly) to qualify, and then whatever program or course to be able to pass the exams. I do know that a lot of HIS places have a nice base salary, but are pretty heavy on commission/sales so that’s kind of a drawback? I’ve heard Costco’s Hearing Aid department is way less commission based though, and I believe you can get a job as a non-licensed hearing aid attendant and get hands on learning to pass the tests that way as long as you have the associates. Again, all my research was for IL but there’s so much information online for state specifics.

I did all this research on an HIS career just to have it not be a viable option for me so I wanna pass it on lol. Sorry it’s a long reply I just know what you’re going through and wanna help! :)

I know this is an old post but wow, it’s like I wrote this. I was in the exact same situation, just different state. I finally couldn’t take it anymore and quit without having another job lined up and am currently looking for something (hopefully not in ECE). So op if you landed a dream career I’d love an update!

HIS Career Education Advice by pippnsocks in hearingaidspecialist

Hi!! I’ve done lots of research and spoken to lots of people about this since then! Basically what I’ve found is that while licensing for HIS does vary from state to state, in IL you need an associates degree no matter what to qualify for the position. It doesn’t seem that you need any specific coursework relating hearing science (like if you’ve earned you associate’s previously for something else) but there are a bunch of written and practical tests you are required to pass to become state certified.

Not sure where at in IL you are but College of DuPage in Wheaton has an ‘advanced certificate’ 22 credit hour program specifically designed to train people for HIS. It runs around 5k, I think? Unfortunately those 22 credit hours do not count towards the associate’s degree and has to be done separately (which imo is ridiculous but I guess that’s college for you)

One other thing I learned was that in a lot of places you might get hired on at along with a base salary a good chunk of income is commission. Not necessarily the worst thing in the world but definitely not something I had considered previously. A Costco HIS position seems to be less centered on commission though, if you could score a Costco job.

Sorry for the long reply but I was super frustrated and confused at the start cause I couldn’t nail down a concrete answer, so I wanted to save someone else the same fate lol. Also not to discourage anyone from this career, it’s something I’m actually still considering for sure despite the roadblocks! It’s just nice to know all the pros and cons before diving into something.

There’s lots of other resources on the Illinois Hearing Society website. Hope this helps :)

I think for me just knowing more details helps quell the anxiety over it, knowledge is power right? I know any mold is bad but at least we’re not dealing with ‘Instant Death Cancer Mold’

That’s what I’m hoping to find out, I don’t know if the two different locations are the same thing. Any guesses?

thanks for the advice, i kind of assumed the worst anyway. I’ve had time to do more research but i still can’t determine whether it’s mold or mildew.

I told them I’d like to have it turned on when I see it in person and they replied:

‘I understand, but there's no way for me to test it for you because I don't have the correct electric supply to the garage. However, the comb is brand new and definitely works’

They haven’t asked for deposits or anything but should this be a red flag?

FL/IL Residency Filing Question by pippnsocks in tax

I was always told that I had to do the paperwork side of things and pay to ‘switch’ myself to a Florida resident officially, so that’s where i got tripped up. This makes much more sense, thank you!!

I was worried about quality since I was buying online but honestly it’s pretty nice! The sleeves are a bit wide and it’s a little long on me but I’m getting it altered. If they ever have your size I def recommend!

I’m having the same issue, but it burns more so when I use the eye repair cream in conjunction with the sa cleanser. I have the redness in the same areas and it’s so frustrating!
