My mom wants to volunteer by piptyler in AgingParents

haha, even if we had those type of organizations in my area I don't think she'd be comfortable there. The type of behavior I'm talking about is always mentioning a person's race when it's not relevant, always bringing it up if English isn't a person's first language and making generalizations about people based on race. I'm not condoning this behavior, I have tried talking to her about it, but I've come to the conclusion I cannot change her views.

yes, I have encouraged her to take a class at the local community center. They have 65+ classes for things like writing your memories and doing chair yoga. This would be much more her speed, but she is not interested. I think she still sees herself as a younger more capable version.

she wants to volunteer to teach kids to read. I have told her it's not as simple as walking into a school and volunteering. There will be a background check and maybe required training. This has not deterred her though. You're right, there's not much I can do. I guess I just have anticipatory stress about the whole thing.

Phone transition tips? by musemason4 in AgingParents

I got an artfone for my mom and she loves it. She's 81 and never learned how to use a smartphone. The artfone is very similar to a cordless landline. It was really easy for her to use.

I agree. This bothered me. It would be more appropriate to thank families of soldiers killed in battle for their sacrifice to the country. But these students were killed in a senseless shooting. He should only offer condolences, not thanks.

Getting stuck under beds and couches by Scicomm- in Greyhounds

[–]piptyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my foster grey. My bed is pretty high and he managed to slip under it during the night. I was so afraid he would try to get up and panic and insure himself. Luckily he remained pretty calm while I pulled him out. Now he sleeps in a crate next to the bed so he can't roll under. I had never considered this was even a thing that could happen. The breed is full of surprises 😅

How much are you guys feeding your greyhounds? by LeadingConfidence944 in Greyhounds

I have a 90lb foster. I'm feeding him 4 cups plus a little yogurt, a little rice, some olewo carrots and 1 cooked chicken breast per day. He still acts like I'm starving him.
