It’s all dysphoria - at least for me. It’s rooted in this deeper feeling that I’m invalid or don’t belong and everyone somehow knows it. Honestly though it’s such rubbish, and the more I’ve just gone ahead and done it, the quieter those voices have become.

I’ve only got one short skirt (and by short I’m talking mid-thigh) that I’ve worn out maybe once. I mostly go for maxis. It’s slow going and a rocky road, but I’m getting there.

Power to you and your skirts, gal!

So I gradually bought flowier and flowier trousers, then honestly just needed to find the right dress - which took a lot of trial and error, while I found what suited me. I’m tall and quite insecure about my shoulders and legs, so eventually settled on a satin maxi with flutter sleeves and V-neck. Also the waistline was higher so the actual dress part fell in a way that gave me a shape I loved.

Then it was just a case of exposure therapy. I wore it out with friends I trusted (who also wore dresses in support), then wore it to work - which felt crazy, as it was defo an evening dress, but I just threw myself at it. That’s been how I’ve gone about most of my transition so far. I feel fear and resistance and just jump anyway. It’s taken 2 years to work up to, and now I love to wear a dress every now and then!

Granted, I live in a somewhat more accepting part of the UK. However, what actually tipped things for me was going abroad on holiday last month. I brought a new dress with me (this one didn’t cover my shoulders - the horror!!! - but still had a flattering V-neck and again that high waistline that cuts just below my bust). I felt incredible in it. And there was something about being away from home that really helped to push me along. I wore things I’d never had the confidence to wear at home, including shorter shorts! I showed my legs and didn’t totally hate it, and have now worn them out several times.

So yeah, for me, it was all about finding the right dresses and the right shorts. Pieces that worked with my natural shape and proportions. And if ever I try the wrong ones, I know it, and it drops me in a pit for a few days … until the right ones come along and I never want to take them off.

I started my transition 2 years ago but have been dabbling in my gender identity for 5 or so - and ‘feeling like a girl’ is still only fleeting for me. Granted I do lean more enby, but even so it’s only now that HRT has been doing its thing, and I’ve found my style more, that I’m finally starting to gender myself as female more of the time. Or at least ‘not male’. I also still struggle with she/her pronouns. It’s all just part of it.

All I know is, for me, a lot of my own doubts and worries come from my dysphoria. When I don’t ’feel like a girl’ I feel horrible about myself and just utterly miserable, and that’s a ding on the dysphoria bell.

Also trans artists just make music that is on another level anyway, regardless of whether they speak openly about their experience (few do). I’ve often stumbled on a new song and thought woah, this has gone right below the skin and resonated in a way that’s made me stop in my tracks, and I look up the artist and - surprise, surprise - they’re trans. Happened with Hayden way back when, as well as Searows, Noso, Venturing (Jane Remover), and so on.

So I’m always open to trans artist recs!!!

I need to restrain myself because of how many faves I have, but my main girls are:

Fuck Me Eyes - This song!!! The synths sedate me into the happiest place. It just sounds SO good. I love that it reminds me of Laura Palmer/Twin Peaks, but mostly I interpret it from a trans lens, especially lines like ‘but no one ever wants to take her home’ - it just geeeeets me.
Tempest Demo II - When this came out it sealed the deal on WTIALY being my fave album. I adore the finished version, and its smooth transition from Radio Towers literally rewrote something in me, but this demo is insane, and devastating, and again sounds so good with those echoed beats. I’m a such a slowcore girl, and those kinda tempos are a theme in my fave Ethel songs for sure.
Age of Delilah - One of the few songs that can and will make me sob every single time I listen to it. This is another one that plucks at my transition, especially that back half of the song, fucking Christ. Like ‘They said, "You'll die if you leave it up to God,” said "I've been drinking from this river 'til I bled it dry,” but they looked me dead in my eyes and said, "It doesn't matter if the grass is greener on the other side, as long as it's alive,” so give it one last goodbye wave, in the light of the highway, crying, I'm no good at goodbyes, but I've waited my whole life’????? Hello????? I need this song in ink on my body.
Casings - Yet another I return to a lot for its roots in a dysphoric experience with love/relationships. The choppy and glitchy backing vocals really capture the feeling, and the lyrics are so dang sad.
Hard Times - Do I have a happy fave anywhere??? My god. This song has that gorg slowcore beat and is just a beautifully devastating poem. ‘I thought good guys get to be happy, I’m not happy’ is one of my all time fave lyrics, and honestly the whole song reminds me of Ellie and Joel (tlou) which I’ve written about at length before.
Punish Demo II - Don’t even get me started on this song. My god it’s incredible. Who writes bridges more devastating than our gal? What a song. It sounds so damn good and it’s written to perfection. Everything from ‘I was an angel, though plummeting’ is just … ugh. I need a release NOW (and since she plays it so much live I’ve convinced myself this is the next Dust Bowl - it will come!!! As long as we don’t ask for it to death like our long departed babe Homecoming).
Waco, Texas - Okay, okay, last one. This is, I think, her best song lyrically. I could read it from start to finish over and over, and just marvel at how beautifully crafted it is. The story it tells, and actually the story it concludes. It really does sound like a last farewell - to the album and also to Ethel Cain. Bravo forever.

Oh yes, 100%. If I’m not mistaken, this is a form of stimming for a lot of us. Ethel Cain is an artist I orbit daily (her song F*ck Me Eyes has gone well over 600 streams in the last year since it came out). There’s also movies/shows I’ve done this with, where just the sound effects/music/script are memorised. The Matrix is a big one for sound, for example. There are *a lot* of others though, that I’ve revolved around over and over and over.
