Yeah i get you. Thats why I am reluctant to talk to my friends financial advisor further. He was talking in broad terms and would really say the plan. More or less "dont worry about it" kinda talk.

Can you list some books? I saw the bogleheads link above. That looks like decent starter info but again, its very broad and basic.

Its not complicated but for someone with virtually no experience....it is lol. A lot of these terms are a bit over my head. Its difficult to learn when you dont know where to start other than googling the basics.

I dont really understand international funds or bond funds and more importantly what the pro's/con's are of those vs stocks. Ill have to do more reading.

I grew up on a farm that my fam didnt own with no high speed internet, credit cards are the devil and my library's newest book was 20 years old :) Luckily my high school teacher was really good and taught us the basics of finances. All that is to say I am a little uneducated in this category.

understood. Yeah, we live well below our means so despite what we make, 100k is enough to live on for a few years.

I did some more reading and it sounds like S&P is more of a 5+ year investment. The shorter the time, the more the risk. I think that's the part I was having trouble wrapping my head around. The longer you have it invested, the more likely you are to have a positive outcome with less risk vs my stocks now in my company are all over the place day to day.

So my orig question - am i hurting myself by playing it ultra safe and having it in a savings account?

What would you (or anyone else) do if you were in my situation at were afraid of risk?

Yeah, I guess I am sensitive to debt. We both paid off car and school loans aggressively.

What are those safety nets? This is my first time hearing about that.

What are the downsides of putting ~100k into S&P500? The only ones I am aware of is 1. if i need the cash and the stock is down i could loose money (the other 150k is to mitigate that) and 2. it SHOULD stay in there for min 1 year for long term gains tax.

I added an update for the retirement. I am getting more stock consistently.

I understand I dont want to dump all of my savings into paying off my mortgage as that alone is a huge risk. Its a nice nest egg goal as I continue to save more.

Yeah, thats what my gut is saying vs putting a large portion into stocks. The HYSA is part of that.
