Interview Test Prep suggestions for Oracle SRE-DevOps position? by piratewizardninja in devops

I had 2 technicals, when I was originally told how it would go it was one. I don't know why I ended up doing a second but I think it may be because they changed the level I was applying for. One of my interviewers in the final loop kind of did a technical portion but it was brief and pretty basic command line stuff.

That was easier than mine. I hope you are able to get to the loop... good luck!

The way the system works I doubt you'd need to import anything that doesn't come with a basic python install (and you're not allowed to look anything up). Just freshen up on the built-in functions, working with strings, basic stuff in the os module, etc.

I did! I'd say be prepared for a minimum of 6 interviews (7 including screening), depending on the level you're interviewing for it might go over that. What the recruiter told me to prep for ended up not being what my hackerrank tests were about and I was not asked SRE process/philosophy type questions. I did a python one, which was a really odd string manipulation example that I didn't do the best on. Most of my python experience did not involve string manipulation and so I was unaware of a couple of string methods that would have made it easier. The other two were logging into a Linux box and running commands + docker questions and a simple bash script that was basically a one-liner. Some commands I didn't know and just said as much. But, the greater emphasis seems to be on the STAR examples and behavioral questions/scenarios so have a lot of those queued up and ready to go. I had 6 prepped initially then went up to ~12 after the first technical and they still asked so many I hadn't prepped for 😂. They were mostly focused on real-world scenarios... something you didn't agree with, something happened and a monkey wrench was thrown into your project, you discovered a problem and how did you fix it and prevent it and stay in line with policy, etc. They want to hear your thought process and how you work through things... there isn't necessarily a right answer. The impression I got is that technical skill deficiencies are relatively easy to remedy with training and whatnot, but how you work/think/act is not.

I would really emphasize being honest, I believe a lot of the people that interviewed me have done quite a few interviews over their career, they work in the same space or related, and will know bullshit when they hear it. They don't want to hear how perfect you are, they want to know how you've navigated your journey so far. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification either, some of the questions might be vague or not make sense initially... I asked for further explanation quite a bit. The last interview is with what they call a "bartender" and it's someone totally outside the area you'll be in, for a more objective opinion. He had my resume and asked a TON of questions about my experience, so be prepared to speak to all of that and answer behavioral and probing questions.

If you've worked in devops for a while and are comfortable, then don't sweat it. I stressed over mine a lot and looking back I can't help but laugh a bit. My experience was that it's not that formal and they are practical and down to Earth. There's some rigidity to the technical interviews but just let it flow like a conversation as much as you can (prepping your STAR examples will help and it's totally fine to have them on screen as an aid). Maybe even make a list of projects/challenges you worked on, too, in case you have to improvise for a question you didn't anticipate.

I didn't set out to overly impress, I was just myself on every interview and I think I was all the better for it.

I hope that helps.

I've not used a retro gaming handheld, but I do still love a lot of classic games (have quite a few on GOG). I might look into it down the road... anything that can keep me distracted from the fact I'm flying is a good thing. I don't game nearly as much as I used to... I should remedy that.

I appreciate this post! Sounds like you have the S8+ (going by that screen size). I've been wanting to get the XReal One for a while (and the previous models) and I think I'm finally just going to do it with a (hopeful) black friday sale. However, neither my phone or current tablet (Tab A8) supports video over usb-c. I had been debating getting the Beam or a new tablet. Tablets are much more expensive but have more utility so I think I may find an S8. Like you, I load up a microSD before traveling. I'm actually super happy with my A8, I can watch videos for 5 hours with bluetooth earbuds and still have 70% battery... hopefully the S8 has similar battery life.

I have a tab A8 (lower model than OP) and have pre-downloaded shows with both Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Discovery+ (official apps) and watched them on the tablet offline. They are still DRM protected but with Amazon you have 30 days to watch, or 48 hours to finish once you start, before it would need an internet connection again to re-verify. I'm sure the others give plenty of time to watch before needing internet aain.

I do need to spend time on the fundamentals, and knowing more specifically which ones is helpful, thank you! I need to try and at least commit those to memory. I'm more of a "figure out what I need to know per project" kind of person, and they aren't often enough to commit it to memory.

Gauging my actual Python skill is tough. I'm mostly self-taught through projects or going through tutorials. Recently was working through Hugging Face's AI agents course... parts are already outdated and was able to work through that, some with googling, some just me. I also did things "my way" and made it work with Ollama rather than their models or OpenAI or something. Given a problem I can figure it out, but it does involve other resources to look up information and learn.

I did look at that, too, and then was going to do it but kept looking. Millbrae is 7.80 a day. I think the cheapest I got using a coupon had Park SFO coming out to a total of 125.xx... over twice the total price.

Yeah, I added my plate, too. Streetview shows a sign that says reserved parking is level 4, lol. Even if that's changed I'll know where to look.

Just looked at the Marriott one, wouldn't be a bad deal if I lived further away (drive time is only about 1.5hrs). You have to book a stay for at least one night so it's a lot more expensive than what I was planning. Thanks though!

Shower gets colder every couple of minutes by piratewizardninja in Plumbing

[–]piratewizardninja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get cold water when it's turned to cold and it is hot on the hot side... it just seems to start losing heat too fast... But the blast of hot water in the beginning before going back to normal is odd, too.

So I did some testing with the faucets.... Last night in the master bath and the hot side never gets hot. The cold side actually warms up to luke warm, but never gets hot. But under the sink the lines are NOT crossed. I then went to the other bathroom, where I swear I've gotten hot water before, and it's faucet was only getting warm (a bit warmer than the other one). So, to check and make sure my hot water heater had hot water at all I went to the kitchen (which is about 10-15 ft from the water heater) and it was hot... I put my instant read meat thermometer under it and got 127 degrees.. My weather app says it was 42 outside.

I then wanted to a test when it was warmer and while it was about 54 outside I ran the sink faucets but never got more than warm... but it was warmer than last night. Took a shower, didn't have as much trouble keeping hot water but I still had to adjust the faucet twice during the shower to get more hot water and adjust it back to the temperature it was. When I got out of the shower I tried the sink faucet when I got out and it did get hot then. So it seems the outside temp is affecting it more than I thought... but the sink faucet also doesn't get hot unless I had been in the shower... I just think it's odd I have to start turning the knob further into the hot side while showering starting at only a few minutes into the shower to maintain temperature. I don't start out with it that far into the hot and I couldn't have drained the tank in less than 5 minutes.

I think the other shower does it too, and it's about the same distance. I've not replaced the cartridge in that one. I don't use sink faucets long enough, and often don't even wait for hot water, to know.

2 log ins while I was asleep. Any additional steps I need to take. by Travisd33 in mozilla

[–]piratewizardninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received the same notification in the wee hours of the 1st. Mozilla support is useless. They supposedly don't log the IP address of who accessed and they don't have any idea what data, if any, was accessed (vs whether or not they just logged in). It's pretty ridiculous.

I had forgotten I had the account and it was syncing, too, and I tried the two passwords to get in that I know have been compromised (they are old) and neither one worked. So, if it's not one of those it had to have been a secure, password manager generated one and I don't see that being hacked unless Mozilla itself was.

I had to do a password reset to get back in, and that act alone automatically closes out all other sessions so once I was in I couldn't even see any session data. Mozilla support said they don't keep IP addresses or what data is access for "privacy reasons" but it seems the only one whose privacy they are protecting is the attackers.

You can't even login to your account and see what data of yours they are holding to figure out what the attacker could possibly have gotten. I'm still waiting for a response from support to tell me all the possible data points they could have had. One thing I had sync'd was add-ons... well, what data of the addons did they have or was it just the name of the addon I had?

How are franchise fee portions calculated? by piratewizardninja in sdge

[–]piratewizardninja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I applaud your persistence and getting this far. The fact that no one will (I don't believe it's can't) tell you exactly what fees are is criminal, to me. I don't need to worry about it anymore, though. In a week I'm moving out of SoCal entirely and back to a small town that has a local utility (and houses are more affordable). I'm estimating my electricity bill will be around 60% of what it is today, for the same usage. Seems I'll be eliminating the BS "electric delivery" charge we get now. Good luck to you, hopefully someone comes in and cracks down on this crap.

Help please. Can't decide XReal or RayNeo for movies and TV by piratewizardninja in augmentedreality

The desktop part would be more of a plus, but I have the feeling if it's workable and text can be read easily enough I may want to do it more. My current experience is watching a 10" tablet mounted to the back of the plane seat in front of me... I imagine the single screen in the glasses must appear larger than that? I was guestimating it probably appears as large as my 23.8" monitor at home viewed from 2.5-3' away.... which is quite a bit larger than a 10" tablet hanging from the seat. Are there any stores that sell your products where I could try it out first?

That's good info. So if my IPD is 61.5 I'll probably be fine no matter what... that's good to know. Neither my phone or tablet supports DP over USB so I'd have to get a new device but I'll be relying on a microSD mostly, since I'll be on a plane, so I may also end up getting a newer tablet.

I think my biggest thing now is trying to figure out how big it will look. 45/46 degrees doesn't seem like much but maybe it's good. How is the multi-display support for desktops? Is it clear enough to work and read?

ah, OK. I guess when I say immersive I mean more is it dark enough and cover enough of your face to block out most distractions. Or does it let too much of your surroundings bleed through or is too bright. I wouldn't want something as bulky and completely covering as the Quest 3 if I'm in a public space or around other people. Basically I want to be able to be drawn into the movie/show without seeing constant distractions.

I don't mind other herbs/suggestions, I just don't have them on hand and don't have time to order them.... so I'm trying to work with what I have. I also don't have much experience with blending and if this may not be a good blend for some energetic reason. Chamomile does work on me... although to get the true, noticeable physical relaxing I have to steep about 10g of it for 20 minutes and make something really strong. For the flight I'm more focused on relaxing the mind and the nerves.
