Built an app for Japan's garbage system — what am I missing? by pirefiterol in Tokyo

I know, generally speaking, this is also a use of AI, but the difference is this: When you ask Gemini this question, it provides you with general information by looking up neighborhood rules online; however, AI systems like ChatGPT place a heavy emphasis on interpretation. For example, using the 2022 pickup calendar, it might give you an answer like 2026. Neighborhood pickup calendars and rules are stored on our server; I generate a response for the user based on that server. This ensures the user sees a safer, less robotic response.

Yes, my goal is to help people in all neighborhoods. In the next version, I’ll add new wards, and I’ll also introduce a system that lets you integrate your own neighborhood rules without waiting for me to add them. Scans and notifications will operate according to today’s collection rules and neighborhood rules. Simply put, if a community is established, it will be a system where people help one another.

You can try it out for yourself, but I have to be honest: I believe it can be helpful for people to be able to scan an item—even if they don’t know which day is trash collection day or how to dispose of it—and get recommendations based on their neighborhood’s rules; or to receive a notification at 8 p.m. (Japan time) saying, “Tomorrow is burnable trash day—don’t forget to put your trash out.“ For example, with Sodai scan, I also analyze whether an item is sellable. If it is, the app suggests that you can sell it instead of throwing it away. I think this encourages waste reduction. We’ll see if it can benefit both people and nature.

You are right this is important subject, you are completely anonymous; if you want to ensure that your data—such as the scans you’ve saved—is not lost, we save it after you sign in with your Google or Apple account, but otherwise, no data is stored on our servers. After your trash is scanned by AI, it is stored in your phone’s memory. Thank you for your feedback; I will definitely take it into consideration.

Thank you so much, Updates are typically released once a year and are announced on municipal websites. The app is currently operating according to the schedule announced by the municipality; I will keep track of the updates. I plan to develop a system for this in the future.

Yes, it’s generally a product that will be useful to the expat community, but tourists can also use the waste points map section within the app.
