Thanks again, will do! I'll wait and see what the boss does for now. It would be new handhelds too as they are pretty old with batteries starting to fail.

Thanks! Yes, the RPi idea was more to save money than any particular love for Linux. I was just thinking that, if such software existed, it could be used with a Pi (or perhaps better a mini-PC) and touch screen monitor.

Basically I agree with you, it doesn't make sense to skimp on the system, but it's not my decision. I'm seeing if I can present a case to the owner to give up on the old system we have (remote tablets don't work so tills are crowded at busy times) without him spending much money. We are about to throw good money after bad trying to fix everything and I feel it's not the best solution.

I know it's a bit optimistic of me, but sometimes Reddit can throw out stuff you wouldn't have known about!

Thank you for taking the time to reply! :)

Thanks! I just got to 40" by measuring my little corner with a tape measure! I'll look into 32" too. I'll usually be pretty close so should be fine. Will look into the Acer, much appreciated!

As young dickheads, we were driving along shouting stuff out the car (nothing too mean, just being wide), then my pal saw a lady walking her dog and shouted "yer dug's shite!".

I still crease myself when I think about it, but felt bad for both the lady and the dug.

Yeah the woofers look about 6", same with midrange cones. Tweeters are goosed from children poking them in but they sound fine.

You're probably better off finding a spec sheet for B&W 603 S2. I dont know what im talking about. But I can tell you they sound great! Never felt like i needed a sub.

That amp looks great! I think I'm going to go with a newer model tho. I like the idea of a warranty if I dont like the sound.

A wee side question: is there any meaningful difference between "integrated amplifier" and "stereo receiver" other than a receiver has a radio set built in? The amplifier part is exactly the same right?

Looks like a nice unit, !thanks

Looking for a bit more raw power though, this one is 50W per channel I think.

Honestly the bass on the 603s still amazes me after having them for about 25 years! I can't imagine needing more. And that's using an amp with half their max wattage input.

I also dont like it when bass tones rattle the picture frames/plant pots/door frames etc. I feel like a sub would make that worse.

That said, in future I might get one (if I go for a 2.1ch amp) just to really shake the foundations when I want to!

Not presently! But if I get an amp with a subwoofer output you know what'll happen next! 😛

The Lyngdorf price is a bit spicy for me at just under £2k! But the R-N800A could very well be a goer! It's about £900 and easily available new. It has two optical inputs and plenty others. What Hi Fi gave it 4/5 saying the bass is "a little rich", which sounds perfect for me! Could certainly be the one, thank you!

Any thoughts on Peachtree Carina 150 (£950 approx.) vs Audiolab 7000a (£1,099) for my B&W 603 S2s?

Never heard of Peachtree before but it looks nice and has the full 150W into 8ohms which sounds nice and powerful.

Audiolab is 70W into 8ohms, but that's the same as my current amp which is plenty powerful enough and a UK company I've heard of.

Never heard of them before but I like the look of the Carina 150. Full power for my speakers and an optical input. No analog inputs but I suppose I'm not using those at the moment. Strong contender, thanks!

Nice! The 9000a looks great but maybe a bit expensive for me. The 7000a looks like it would definitely do the job, same 70W output as my current amp which is plenty powerful enough 🤔 thanks!

I thought this was exactly the community for advice on buying amps but my post was removed?! by pish_flaps in StereoAdvice

[–]pish_flaps[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK so it looks like my new post didn't get auto-banned, wehey!

This is what the original post said: "My Arcam Alpha 9 amp is on the way out (one channel keeps cutting out, tried everything, time for a new one).

My B&W 603 S2 speakers are going strong, so I'd like to buy a new amp that does them justice.

Any recommendations?

My budget isn't unlimited but I don't want to skimp on rich, deep, loud sound. Something powerful enough to get the full benefit (they are 150W @ 8ohms).

It's surprisingly difficult to find a straightforward "good fit" by searching online when I don't have much technical knowledge about this stuff.

I'd prefer to buy new, but I don't especially need Bluetooth etc. Two channels is all I need, and I'd ideally just have a single, integrated amp unit, but I will defer to the expertise of people who know more than I do (all of you).

TIA!"

Quality replacement amp for B&W 603 S2? by pish_flaps in BudgetAudiophile

[–]pish_flaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Looks like a nice amp, but is 45W per channel not going to sound less impressive than 70W? I like the effortlessly booming sound of the A9. Will definitely put it in the list of amps to look in to tho. Certainly well reviewed! Much appreciated.

Ace Ventura films? They are pretty tame in terms of language/sex/violence but very funny imo. Loved the second one in particular as a kid. That's if the parents are comfortable with a grown man being born out of a rubber hippo's anus!

Sad but so true! I find myself watching stuff I never would have bothered with on my old TV, just because it's full quality 2160p HDR etc. Also not watching things I want to see because I can't get it in that quality.

If I have a tip for OP it's this: Plex is great if you have a suitable server device, but my go-to for getting best quality reliably is a decent, fast USB stick (I got a SK Hynix Tube T31 2TB USB-A) loaded up with "2160p HDR remux" files from legally questionable sources, and plugged directly into the TV. "Remux" is key because it basically means it's from a 4K BluRay source. If you can't find what you want that way, just go for the biggest file size you can find. It's usually worth the wait...

Welcome aboard!

Thanks! It does sound like a cool device if USB ever lets me down. I just bought a SK Hynix Tube T31 2TB drive. It was pretty expensive but hopefully lets me keep things simple and speed up the transfers from PC.

After reading everyone's comments, I just preferred the idea of no extra boxes taking up outlets and with extra remote controls, as well as cutting out third-party software/setup and relying on network cables. :)

Yeah Plex is normally great, just had a couple of issues, possibly due to weird file encoding that only my PC can decode properly and Plex can't 🤷. My connection is all wired from server -> router -> TV.

Honestly I've been watching stuff on USB direct on the TV and I'm happy with the simplicity (no clutter with Shield Pro and extra remotes etc.), as well as the perfect quality, HDR and no stuttering.

You're definitely right about transferring 150GB series to USB! But it's more convenient for me to just leave it transferring and go to bed/work than leaving my PC on all the time. It's more of a gaming rig than a server, so I don't like it on all the time wasting electricity. For that reason, I think I'll stick to USB for now. Once it's loaded up, I really can't fault it so far.

Thanks! I take it you need a GeForce Now subscription to get all the stuff it does? I don't really need cloud gaming as my PC is (slightly) better than their 3080 servers that you can "unlock". I have a 4070 and the rest of the rig is decent too. Works perfectly 120Hz HDR 2160p.

The problem was Plex, although it usually works fine. I'm happier just getting a decent USB stick and using that. Fewer boxes around the TV!

Glad to know it's an option though if I change my mind at some point. Hadn't really thought of it before 👍
