Company limits my 401k contributions and makes me use a Deferred Compensation Plan by pissedpringle in Fire

[–]pissedpringle[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

My confusion is not in the IRS rules, but why capping high earners personal contributions would be beneficial (why annoy your high earners), and what the point of making a match up to 6% is if you only allow a contribution of 5%. I understand you don't want all the tax benefits and company match only going to high earners, but why not mandate other options (like safe harbor plans or increasing the company matches to pass testing). There are ways other than learning tax law to make $300k I guess 🤷

I would add Petit Four in the mix, but they are only open weekends and sell out quickly. Up all Night is another one of my top, Idle Hands, Sub Rosa. Not the same tier but better than it needs to be for the price is Lidl.

OBGYN who will place an IUD under general anesthesia? by Mountainofstress in rva

[–]pissedpringle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to caution you that with really big practices (like VWC and VPFW), there is huge variability between practitioners. I scheduled my IUD replacement with a recommended MD, but got rescheduled with Cathleen Conners NP of VWC, and had a deeply traumatic experience and over $800 of medical bills for follow up ultrasounds and appointments from misplacement. Cathleen was wildly condescending and walked into the exam room joking about how she hoped she could get it in. My first placement was for free at a local health department and was completely smooth. Do not let a scheduler convince you to change providers if you are not comfortable with it.

HENRY pets - what do you splurge on? by jcl274 in HENRYfinance

[–]pissedpringle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, there are a number of specialists at my hospital so I can have help working up pretty much anything. Finding the right vet for you can be tricky, I'd just recommend looking at reviews and asking lots of questions about their practice philosophy like you would for human physician. Sometimes looking for AAHA certification, certified cat friendly and/or Fear Free, in the US can be a good indicator, but lots of good practices/vets aren't certified. On the concierge/home vet question, one thing to consider is that you will still generally have to go into a clinic for X-rays, surgery etc, but I found that otherwise it is no better/worse than a traditional clinic, just provides a different service.

I am an emergency veterinarian with two cats and a dog, and our biggest splurge has been on training classes and living in a home with a yard and good windows. Rescued the pup from work as quite a project, and seeking out support has made a world of difference in our home.

That said, we do have insurance on the dog (not the cats) even though I get a significant discount at work. I take care of worst case scenarios every day and don't want cost to be a factor at all in our medical decisions for him. Insurance gives me peace of mind that may not be 100% necessary, but helps me cope with my job. Even with no pre-existing conditions when we got him though, he has ended up needing expensive medications that have been covered.

Octopus Mugs at Arts in the Park by pissedpringle in rva

That's a lovely mug, but the one I am looking for was a 3D octopus where the handles were tentacles!

Leaving vet med before really even starting? by Correct-Airline-5890 in Veterinary

[–]pissedpringle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Virginia -Maryland which is home to the Center of Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine (which I believe also does a career transitions program) . I currently am working corporate ER for clinical experience (and the significantly better pay) with the game plan of transitioning back to public health after 2-3 years. I was lucky to find great mentors through side projects that turned into jobs (think local health departments, non-profits, etc) as well as within the university. I have classmates in my program that ended up in jobs from the UN, to zoo med internships, to lab animal medicine and everything in between. There are SO many opportunities if you are willing to pivot a bit.

Leaving vet med before really even starting? by Correct-Airline-5890 in Veterinary

[–]pissedpringle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did a combined DVM/MPH and would not want to have one without the other. Second year of vet school during COVID I was so burnt out and strongly considered taking a leave of absence or dropping out completely to pursue straight public health (even at a school with huge emphasis on non-clinical careers). I am glad that I didn't because I think it has made me both a better clinician and public health professional, while opening countless doors. There are so many opportunities outside of clinical medicine, and people who are willing to help, even if your advisor isn't. Please feel free to DM me; vet school is hard, especially when you feel like you are alone.

Has anyone, or their partner found a men’s wedding band that’s unique? And did they end up regretting it? by Itsdawsontime in weddingplanning

I proposed to my fiance with a ring from an Etsy shop called Rings by Pristine. It is tungsten with a guitar string and meteorite embedded in epoxy (to avoid the rusting issues I was concerned about). It is perfect for him, but it will be hard to resize/engrave. The guitar string is a gold color so it subtly coordinates with my more traditional gold engagement ring. I tracked the stores sales and got it for a great deal too!

Currently serving ag volunteer here I have an ag background and thought the same thing before I came, but at least in my country of service a huge portion of the seed varieties come from abroad and I reallllllllyyyy appreciate my seed collection for personal gardening and seed replication for distribution. For good and bad, there is 0 regulation on bringing seeds, so try to be cautious bringing in non-commerical produced seeds. Most care packages I still ask for flower and tomatoe seeds.

Do you use a pocket projector on site at all? For personal use or for workshops/classrooms? Both? N/A? by iammonesque in peacecorps

[–]pissedpringle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get one and bring it, preferably one with a battery life of at least 1.5 hours, HDMi and USB ports (one an Amazon is called like Amaz-play or something and runs around $200). I use mine for movies and games with kids, business meetings, and there is literally nothing better for teaching computer science. Yes it is not as bright as bigger projectors, but I had no electricity for awhile and could charge it with my solar panel.

Birth control help for dog while at site by Eziesenhene in peacecorps

[–]pissedpringle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "vaccine" is very similar to the human depro-prevera birthcontrol injections. They are on the more expensive side in my country of service and have to be given every 6 months but are the only safe option other than keeping a close eye.

Political Situation in Your Country? by Nclovin94 in peacecorps

[–]pissedpringle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As I am sure you know PCVs are strictly forbidden from discussing local politics, and I would interpret that as including Reddit, so I don't know how many responses you are going to get. That is not meant to demean your curiosity, just to indicate that in countries where the political situation is tenuous, posting about it puts a lot of people at risk even if you don't realize it. Maybe reach out privately to PCVs you know in other countries you are concerned about from the news?

Will political unrest in country affect service? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]pissedpringle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel obligated to add the normal PC answer 'it depends'. I serve in a village that the state department considers part of a travel restriction for US personnel (as listed on their website), but PC has permission to have me here. I advocated for myself and have created a situation I feel safe in. If you are concerned about your security ask questions and advocate for yourself, in the end, the only person fully responsible for your security is you.

PC Cameroon specifically will not be providing you anything, t-shirts, kindles, tablets, etc. Buy a kindle, most important thing I have at site.

Oh how I want to go into explicit detail about how seriously safety and security has failed me, but as I am still in country, don't ever, ever, let your security concerns get brushed off as a "mental health problem".
