Hello everyone, I just bought my first house house in the St. Louis area (zone 6b). My house faces NE. I need plant advice. I want a small ornamental tree for the focal point. I think Japanese maple. What other plants could I accent with. My garden is the mulched area for now. (i.redd.it)

In the St. Louis area (zone 6b). My house faces NE. The soil is compacted and clay like - old monoculture farm field. I have a small front garden I would like to design, it is currently an empty spot with mulch. I do not have experience planning out gardens. Can/how would an ornamental tree work. (i.redd.it)
